Introduction

Stuart McIntyre
Professional Consigner

A true British sports car that offers spritely performance and outright driving pleasure.

The Triumph Spitfire was produced as a direct competitor of the Austin-Healey Sprite, and subsequently the MG Midget. Triumph found itself playing catch up, yet eventually ended up producing a quality sports car that rivaled the competition in many ways.

The Spitfire was underpinned by a Herald-style separate chassis and was powered by the same family of engines. Similar to the Herald, the Spitfire was a look created by Michelotti with a closely-cropped interior for two.

This is a Mark II, which was produced between 1965-1967. The car was quite a step up from its predecessor with a retuned engine, revised camshaft profile, water-heated manifold and tubular exhaust manifold which increased the car to 67BHP at 60,000rpm - it remains very accessible and easy to keep on the road thanks to the near-total parts supply.

This particular example, used, enjoyed, and showed for the previous 11 years of ownership. With its classic white over red colour combo, this Spitfire looks beautiful in its restored condition.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Stuart after meeting Shirley the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'll be really sad to see this little car go, after so many great road trips and shows I've had some real fun in it.

Shirley purchased the car back in March 2010 from a lady owner who had the car for 23 years. She was the wife of the man who started the KwaZulu-Natal Triumph Sports Car Club, and fully rebuilt the car from the ground up.

Over Shirley's ownership, she hasn't had to carry out too much work on the car, apart from overhauling the suspension system. Shirley has also fitted a more reliable electronic ignition and a new thermostat for good measure. In 2012 Shirley focused on getting the car ready for National Gathering in Plettenberg Bay where she entered the Concours d'etat competition and was awarded silver.

After many years in South Africa, Shirley transported the car back to Scotland where it resides now. Unfortunately, she has to make space for her next project and the little Triumph has to go. Feel free to ask Shirley any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The spitfire certainly doesn't lack in the looks department, thanks to the work of Giovanni Michelotti, this is one show-ready classic ready to be enjoyed.

Wheels and Tyres

These 13" Triumph wheels look great, we love the chrome hub to match the rest of the brightwork around the car. The wheels appear in great and uncurbed condition.

The tyres are Encore Indias, appearing to show a good amount of tread for this usable classic to drive away on.

Bodywork

This is one well cared for example - all the bodywork is in excellent condition. The shut lines across all the panels are tight and even as you'd expect, apart from the passenger door, which looks just ever so slightly out.

Please watch the videos to see just how good this car is - it's been meticulously owned and cared for over Shirley's ownership.

Paint

This Triumph Spitfire Mark II is finished in an deep and glossy "Frozen White" which was applied to the car in 2017.

Across the car, the paint is even in finish and colour. The only points that we noticed are the very slightest of cracks around the tonneau cover attachment studs and the front headlight. Please have a look at the images to see the condition of the paint in more detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass also looks in great condition throughout, the rubber seals look tight around the windows and are in excellent condition too.

The soft top is good too, and the chrome also appears in great shape just as you would expect. Please take a look at the exterior photographs for a closer view of the exterior.

Interior

Classy '60s red leather bucket seats and a simple dashboard make the interior of this charming classic.

Seats and Carpets

A very smart red leather finish on this example. After a closer look, the seat and carpets are in great condition along with the door cards, carpets, and roof lining, all modernised and retrimmed for the South African Classic car shows.

Dashboard

The black dash looks in great condition combined with the instrument cluster in the centre of the dash.

Shirley has informed us that all the dials, gauges, etc work as they should do.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Triumph steering wheel is a delight to see inside the cabin of this highly original classic.

The gear stick looks in great condition in line with the rest of the interior. Please take a look at the media for a detailed view of the car.

Mechanics

A retuned engine and revised camshaft give the Spitfire Mark II an extra kick of power.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a lively retuned 1,147cc Standard SC Inline 4, Shirley reports regularly giving the car the attention it deserves through servicing. The car is fitted an electronic ignition and a new thermostat and reports great reliability as a result.

We filmed a mechanical video during our visit, where we start the car cold, show around the engine bay (incredibly clean), and underneath the car - please have a look. Shirley also mentioned that the car could probably do with a bit of tuning so it runs better on the local fuel in the UK.

Suspension and Brakes

Shirley has always given the brakes along with all the other mechanical parts the attention they require over her long 11 years of ownership.

The car's suspension to looks good, Shirley informed us that she had the suspension overhauled shortly after purchasing the car. She assures us that the car handles as you'd expect and stops just as it should do too.

The Drive

A lively little sports car, quick enough to keep up with modern traffic, and winning many head turns from its dashing and charming body shape.

Electrics and Other

Shirley assures us that everything on the car works as expected to her knowledge, including all the electrical systems, dials, gauges, and clocks. The only thing she mentioned was that the horn isn't working currently.

History and Paperwork

Freshly imported to the UK, and owned by a Merticulus Triumph fan, This award-winning Spitfire Mark II is a real catch.

The car comes with a good amount of paperwork and a report on the Spitfire Mark II written by Shirley. It appears the car was resprayed in "Frozen White" in 2017. The car has received a new reliable electronic ignition, a new thermostat, and overhauled suspension system.

The car was imported to the UK in May 2019. Shirley will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.
