Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

Charming, practical, and exceptionally easy to maintain, the Triumph Herald makes for a delightful classic ownership experience.

Offering charm, practicality, and style, the Triumph Herald 1200 is an ideal choice for the enthusiast who prioritises the retro experience and ease of ownership over raw speed. Its standout features are its uniquely accessible, DIY-friendly mechanics and a separate chassis design that provides superb access to the engine. Despite its humble 1200cc engine, the car is fun and engaging on country roads, thanks to its accurate steering and delightful handling.

These attributes make it an ideal starter classic. Enhancing its appeal are the distinctive Michelotti styling, independent suspension, disc brakes, and superb support from numerous independent specialists for parts and upgrades. A long lived design, the Herald offered practical novelties such as an exceptionally tight turning circle, complemented by a wood veneer dash panel and rubber bumpers.

This August 1967 convertible finished in 'Cherry Red' with a 'Cactus Green' coloured vinyl interior is one of the later, highly-specified 1200 models, factory-fitted with useful options like front disc brakes and a heater. It boasts incredible provenance, having been owned by three generations of the same family since new. This very original and solid example comes from ~29 years with our vendor and has been family owned since new, it displays only ~17,335 miles on the clock and received a careful paint renovation in 2020. Documentation includes the original bill of sale and MOTs back to 2005.

If you're in the market with a Herald convertible with arguably the best provenance on the market today, then maybe this is the car for you.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Keith the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I remember the very day my grandad bought the car!

Keith inherited the car in 1997 and initially maintained its complete originality, frequently entering it into classic Triumph events. Throughout his 29-year custodianship, Keith added around 10,000 miles, using it as a cherished occasional car and always keeping it garaged.

Although Keith deeply appreciates the Triumph's charm and simplicity, he is now looking to replace it with a more modern open-top roadster.

Keith will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The combination of low mileage and meticulous ownership is evident in the car's remarkable structural solidity.

Wheels and Tyres

The 13” steel wheels are cleanly presented with minimal signs of age.

The front of the car is fitted with Admiral tyres, the rears are fitted with Tigars - they show a spec of 155/80/R13 and are all over 20 years old, with even tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The panel gaps are generally good, though the passenger doors sit slightly proud of the surrounding bodywork and requires a firm close, offset by solid door wells and no sign of door sag. Minor under-paint bubbling is present on the rear wing seams and near the offside headlamp, likely related to the restoration completed approximately five years ago.

The car's underside looks solid, with both the main chassis rails and outriggers in good visual condition.

The body panels are in good, dent-free condition, resting evenly on the chassis.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The 'Cherry Red' paint has even coverage and is consistent in hue. It has a decent shine, the lustre is a little flat in places, but we suspect that some elbow grease will offer very rewarding results. It is generally free of significant road wear or surface marks. There’s a minor crack on the nearside bonnet-wing seam.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and headlamps is in good condition; the driver's door seal near the quarter light has perished, but overall, the Triumph's seals are in excellent condition.

The headlamps bezels and over riders were part of the 2020 renovation; the rear lenses show signs of age.

The chrome trim is complete and presents well, although some elements, such as the door handles, rear light embellishment and boot hinges, show signs of age.

The bumpers are flush to the body and look smart with mild signs of age on some of the paintwork and rubber.

Interior

Highly original and showing only minimal signs of wear, the car also features a handful of useful additions.

Seats and Carpets

The 'Cactus Green' vinyl upholstery is in good shape; the rear base of the passenger seat has a tape repair, but the seats present well and provide ample comfort.

The sand coloured carpets are replacement items - they are a little baggy in places, but are free of significant damp.

Dashboard

The dashboard remains original, aside from the addition of a digital radio.

The padding, veneer facia, and switches display smartly, showing only mild signs of age in certain areas.

All controls are reported to be fully operational.

The car is fitted with an optional and operational heater.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel shows minor marks and slight fractures on the spokes, consistent with the car's age, but this does not detract from the pleasantly original cabin.

The gear lever is good condition.

Mechanics

Thanks to regular maintenance, the engine runs exceptionally smoothly and quietly.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts without hesitation, running smoothly and quietly without any unwanted vibrations, knocks or noises. Even from a cold start, the idle is even and stable. While a small amount of exhaust smoke was noted upon startup, this quickly dissipated as the engine warmed. The oil pressure light extinguished immediately upon firing.

The engine bay presents positively.

Owner Keith maintains and services the car himself and recently performed a coolant flush.

The gearbox demonstrated seamless operation, shifting smoothly through all gears with no reported faults or unwanted noises. Keith is happy with the clutch's performance (the clutch cylinder was replaced in 2020).

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension offers smooth, absorbent travel.

During the short ride out, no unwanted noises or thuds were noted.

Due to limited recent use, the brakes briefly squealed upon initial application. However, this quickly subsided, and for the remainder of the drive, the brakes performed without issue, stopping the car effectively and free of pulling or wobbling.

The car was equipped with upgraded front discs when new.

The Drive

The 1.1-litre engine strikes a perfect balance in the Herald's evolution, offering more power than the original 948cc unit while proving smoother and more eager to rev than the later 1.3-litre block.

The quick, precise steering, firm ride, and seating position give the Herald a surprisingly sporting feel, though its rear independent suspension ensures perfectly predictable and neat handling. The engine pulls evenly, maintained remarkable smoothness, and idled very sweetly throughout our time with the car, running faultlessly after reaching operating temperature.

Owner Keith reports that the car has been reliable, with any issues immediately addressed; he notes no trouble with engine temperature or oil pressure.

Electrics and Other

The original-specification vinyl roof was replaced approximately 20 years ago. It provides a decent seal, is free of damage, and raises and lowers without issue. The car includes its hood cover; fasteners attach, but full fitting requires minor persuasion.

Although retaining its original dynamo, the car now features a negative earth setup (controlled by dashboard switches fitted by Keith) to accommodate the digital radio.

A body cover is also included with the sale.

History and Paperwork

Sold with its original sales invoice, the car has been carefully maintained by its owners since new.

The Herald was ordered new by Keith's grandfather in August 1967 at Hughes of Beaconsfield, purchased by part-exchanging a Jaguar SS. Used occasionally, it was later passed to Keith's father, and officially registered in Keith's name in 1997; a few years after he unofficially took custodianship.

The car retains its original bill of sale and includes MOT certificates dating back to 2005. Crucially, a 1987 AA report supporting the low mileage is included in the paperwork folder. In late 2020, the car received a significant ~£3,750 refurbishment, covering new paint and re-chroming. The original owner's handbook is also included.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
