Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Sought after and popular British classic - lovely cared for example.

The Triumph TR4A is quite a sought after and popular British classic. Even as “project” cars, they can attract a lot of attention, like the one we sold a few weeks ago.

This particular example, has had lots of time and money spent on it on a full body off restoration that Mick carried out. Having owned the car for 28 years, Mick is now ready for it to be driven away by a new owner and cherished for many years to come.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Mick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've taken the decision to sell the car now, as I'm not using it as much as I used to. I hope that it will be looked after in the same way that it has been over the last 28 years.

Meet Mick, the owner of this Triumph TR4A for some 28 years having bought it in 1993. Great to see Mick driving this lovely car after all that time.

Mick has always wanted to do a restoration on a classic car, and when the opportunity came up to buy this one which was described as being rot free he went for it. From 1993 when be bought it, the car went through a 3 year restoration, stripping the car back to metal and building it up to the condition you see it now.

It’s worth mentioning that Mick started an apprenticeship as a mechanic back when he was 19, as well as being part of the guild of master craftsman in his professional life too. He ran his own garage repairing and tuning cars before retiring, and that’s when he took on and started the TR4A project.

In his ownership, he’s enjoyed the car and taken it to local shows etc. On one occasion he took the car along with his son to the “Crooked Spire Classic” in Chesterfield where they liked it so much the car was featured in their annual calendar.

Exterior

Finished in blue, the car looks absolutely lovely on an overcast day in the countryside. See the detail on condition below.

Wheels and Tyres

15" wire-wheels wrapped in Vredestein tyres all around. The wheels are in good condition along with the rest of the car, take a look at the images to see the detail.

Bodywork

The bodywork is great on this car, take a look a the video review to see the shut-lines and panel gaps.

Since the restoration was completed, Mick has kept the car garaged and the condition of the bodywork and underside is testament to keeping it from corroding.

Paint

This dark blue paint that the TR4A’s came in, is lovely. The finish and colour is even across the car.

There are a couple of blemishes in the paint, for example some light scratching on the rear wing where something has brushed past. This is nothing that couldn’t be rectified with a bit of elbow grease.

Glass and Trim

This car is fitted with the “Surrey Top” option. The glass across the car looks good with only a few scratches on the rear screen. The trim and brightwork is also in good condition, testament to Mick’s ownership and care of the car.

We couldn’t see the pitting that is common with old chrome on these cars.

Interior

Mick restored the interior when he bought the car and it still presents well some 25 years on.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather and black carpets are the order of the day in this car; they present in good condition.

The driver’s seat has a bit of stretching of the leather but other than that, all looks good. View the photos for the detailed view.

Dashboard

The beautiful wood finished dashboard on this British classic looked in great condition. The dials all look really good too.

Watch the video review to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Wood finish on both the steering wheel and gearstick; they present in good condition.

Mechanics

Mick took us around the local area, on some beautiful big country roads, details on the car below.

Engine and Gearbox

Mick left the car in the cold for a proper cold start and it fired in to action on the first go. This car is fitted with a 4 speed gearbox, going through those gears with absolute ease.

We had a slight hick-up on our drive, a loose wire was causing some miss-firing but we sorted it en-route and enjoyed the rest of the drive.

Suspension and Brakes

IRS on this TR4A, a very nice ride that was very comfortable for us. When Mick carried out the restoration he put new brakes and pads all around, but opted to keep the car stock and not upgrade it with an added servo.

We didn’t observe any knocks/rattles that would elude to any issues. Watch the video to see the car in action.

The Drive

We went on some lovely country roads. It was a great spirited drive that Mick took us on and you could tell he knew this car well.

Watch the video to see the drive.

Electrics and Other

Mick informs us that everything works as it should.

He also has a complete gearbox with overdrive, prop-shaft, rear axle with differential for this car that he salvaged from a car in disrepair. This is not included with the sale but he would happily do a deal with a potential buyer if interested.

History and Paperwork

Well documented restoration process took place in Mick's ownership - stacks of paperwork show pride in this work.

Mick imported this car from South America in 1991, and straight away began a restoration on the car. He converted the car from LHD to RHD and took the car back to bare metal as part of the work.

You’ll see some lovely photos of this work that he did, registering the car for the first time in the UK in 1995.

The car is showing just over 76,000 miles as of 10.09.2019.
