Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

A British sports car that's spent more than half a century with one owner.

Finished in a charming shade of blue and benefitting from decades of careful ownership, this 1967 Triumph TR4A represents a rare opportunity to acquire a genuinely cherished example. Having remained with Ken for an astonishing 51 years, the car has been continuously maintained, improved and enjoyed throughout his stewardship.

Now offered for sale due to age, this TR4A comes with a wealth of history, numerous sensible upgrades and the sort of provenance that simply cannot be replicated.

It comes with a current MOT valid until 02.06.2027, even though it is MOT and road tax exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Ken the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

A well-presented and honest TR4A that has clearly been enjoyed and maintained throughout its long-term ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

The car currently sits on TR6 steel wheels, which suit its purposeful appearance well and remain in good condition.

The sale also includes the original wheels, offering the next owner the option of returning the car to its factory-correct specification if desired.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork presents well overall and appears straight throughout. Panel fit is consistent with the character of a classic British sports car and the car retains a strong visual presence from every angle.

The fibreglass boot lid remains fitted and in good order.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The TR4A has been repainted on more than one occasion during its lifetime, resulting in two subtly different shades of blue being visible across the bodywork. Despite this, the finish still presents attractively and suits the car's well-loved character.

There is a crack visible on the bonnet, as shown in the accompanying photographs, along with the usual age-related imperfections one would expect from a car that has been enjoyed over many decades.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in good condition throughout, while the chrome trim, bumpers and brightwork continue to present well.

The car is supplied with both its hardtop and soft top, providing excellent versatility regardless of the weather or season.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

A charming and characterful cabin that perfectly complements the TR4A's classic roadster appeal.

Seats and Carpets

The blue-trimmed interior remains an inviting place to spend time and presents well for the age of the vehicle.

The seats show nicely with good colour and shape, while the carpets and interior trim continue to offer a tidy appearance throughout.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The wooden dashboard remains one of the highlights of the cabin, housing the traditional Smiths instrumentation and switchgear.

It presents well and retains the classic British sports car atmosphere that makes these Triumphs so enjoyable to own.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel, controls and gear lever all show honest signs of use while remaining entirely in keeping with the car's character.

The overdrive gearbox makes longer journeys considerably more relaxed and usable than the standard setup.

image

Mechanics

Well maintained throughout long-term ownership and upgraded where it enhances the driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine has been rebuilt during Ken's ownership and continues to perform strongly. Under the bonnet, the engine bay presents as a well-used but well-cared-for example, reflecting a car that has been driven and maintained rather than hidden away.

A desirable overdrive gearbox has been fitted, significantly improving cruising ability.

Importantly, the original gearbox is also included within the sale.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was renewed several years ago and fitted with polyurethane bushes, helping improve durability and sharpen the car's handling characteristics. The TR4a was the first TR to feature independent rear suspension, it has the IRS badge on the boot lid.

The car feels composed on the road and benefits from these sensible upgrades.

image

The Drive

Ken told us the TR4A drives exceptionally well and remains a thoroughly enjoyable classic sports car. With responsive performance, engaging handling and the added benefit of overdrive, it offers exactly the sort of driving experience enthusiasts seek from a traditional Triumph.

image

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems operate as expected and the car has clearly benefitted from ongoing maintenance throughout its long-term ownership, ken told us the interior heater works fine but the fan is not working, he believes it’s seized through lack of use.

The inclusion of both hardtop and soft top further enhances its practicality and usability.

Ken told us there is play in the rear half shafts, he bought re-built rear hub and driveshaft units with the intention of fitting last year, this didn’t happen due to my knee op, the units will be included in the sale.

image

History and Paperwork

An exceptionally long-term ownership story backed up by a substantial history file.

Few classic cars can boast the sort of provenance offered here. Having spent the last 51 years with the same owner, this TR4A comes with extensive paperwork documenting its life, maintenance and ongoing care throughout Ken's stewardship.

Alongside the extensive history file, the sale includes the original gearbox, the original wheel set, the removable hardtop and the soft top. Together, these items provide excellent value and flexibility for the next owner while preserving the car's connection to its original specification. It comes with a current MOT valid until 02.06.2027.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

It states the original wheels are availble- are the wire with spines?
Are all the bodywork welds soft welds.
Why is there mention of a fibre boot lid?
