Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

The Triumph Herald remains one of Britain’s most recognisable small classics, combining charming Michelotti styling with simple mechanicals and huge enthusiast appeal.

Lightweight, distinctive and wonderfully period in character, the Herald has become an increasingly popular choice for those looking to enter the world of classic British motoring.

This 1968 example presents as a genuine restoration project, offering an honest base for recommissioning or full restoration.

The car is finished in red following an earlier colour change from white and retains plenty of charm and character despite requiring cosmetic and mechanical attention.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Janine the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This was my late father's project and it needs to go to someone that can bring it back to it's former glory.

The car is now being offered as a non-running project, though importantly the engine still turns freely as you'll see in the video.

While it requires work throughout, it presents an opportunity for an enthusiast looking for a rewarding classic British restoration project with plenty of scope for improvement.

Janine will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in red following an earlier colour change from white, this Herald Convertible presents as an honest and usable classic project with plenty of charm throughout.

Wheels and Tyres

The car sits on original-style steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, maintaining the classic Triumph appearance nicely. The wheels present well overall and suit the car’s character perfectly.

It is recommended to change the tyres as part of the restoration.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork appears largely straight overall, though there are visible imperfections and evidence of previous repair work in places. Some filler repairs and cosmetic blemishes can be seen around the lower sections of the bodywork, with certain panel gaps and shut lines showing room for improvement.

Importantly, the car still presents as a complete and honest example with strong restoration potential.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Originally finished in white, the Herald was repainted red earlier in its life. The paint now shows signs of age and use throughout, with areas of fading, imperfections and previous remedial work visible in places.

Despite this, the car still carries plenty of visual appeal and suits the Herald’s classic styling very well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Much of the exterior trim appears complete, including the chrome detailing, lighting and brightwork.

The glass presents in usable condition overall and the car retains a pleasingly original feel throughout.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Inside, the Herald presents surprisingly well and offers a clean, classic cabin environment full of period charm.

Seats and Carpets

The black seats present nicely overall with only light signs of age visible.

The cabin retains a tidy and usable appearance throughout, making it an inviting place to sit and enjoy the car.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The wooden dashboard remains a real highlight of the interior, giving the cabin a distinctly period British feel.

The switchgear, gauges and controls all help preserve the Herald’s wonderfully simple character.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An aftermarket sports-style steering wheel has been fitted, complementing the classic interior nicely while adding a slightly more purposeful feel behind the wheel.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically, the Herald is currently described as a non-running project, though importantly the engine turns freely and the engine bay appears complete overall.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay presents as honest and usable, with the car retaining much of its original mechanical layout.

While recommissioning work should be expected before returning the vehicle to the road, the engine turning freely is an encouraging starting point for future restoration.

image

Suspension and Brakes

As with any vehicle of this age that has been off the road, inspection and recommissioning of the braking and suspension systems is advised before use.

image

The Drive

The car has not been road tested due to its current non-running status.

image

Electrics and Other

The Herald should be considered an ideal rolling restoration or recommissioning project, offering strong potential for an enthusiast looking for a usable classic to improve over time.

image

History and Paperwork

With the car remaining complete overall and retaining plenty of original character, it offers a strong foundation for improvement or full restoration.

The Herald is accompanied by its classic styling, usable presentation and appealing convertible configuration, making it an attractive candidate for someone wanting an enjoyable long-term project. We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Looks like a great car, sorry your Dad didn’t get the chance to do all he might’ve wanted to.

Did he have any spares that will come with the car?

Was the car garaged all the time he had it?

Many thanks

James
