Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The first British production sports car with petrol injection, all the good looks of the TR4 but with significantly more power.

Built as the successor to the TR4, the TR5 retained its beautiful Michelotti styling, however feels like a much newer car thanks to the uprated mechanics. The car managed to outperform many other premium sports cars from the '70s thanks to the new ~152BHP fuel injected 2.5L engine, capable of reaching speeds of ~125MPH.

The production run for these European cars was limited, just ~1 year and ~3,000 produced, around 1/3 staying in the UK as home market cars. The rarity, coupled with the good looks and also the performance (arguably the fastest TR produced), make it a sought after model, which we're sure is why you're here.

This particular TR5 PI is a home market example, coming to sale from ~6 years ownership, it has had a significant restoration in the past 3 years. With the works completed, this car then took part in the Club Triumph 10 Countries run in 2017, a testament to the condition.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Austen the custodian, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After restoring this car, the owner put it through its paces with a tour across the European continent.

The owner purchased this car in 2016, and since has had the car stored and maintained by an acquaintance Austen, who is handling the sale. The car has a solid history file documenting various work over the years, including what appears to be a concours level restoration in the late 90s.

With the trip to Europe planned, the current owner swapped the original seats out for more modern Mazda ones, a typical swap for classics like this that are used for touring. You'll be pleased to know the originals do come with the sale too though. Austen will be happy to answer any of your questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

Beautiful Michelotti designed styling from the TR4 carried through to the TR5, just the model badges give away the power this car has.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the 15" wire wheels, these are upgraded items from the original disc wheels the car came with. They presented in great condition on our visit.

The wheels are wrapped in Uniroyal Rain Experts 3's dated 2016, take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the wheels and tyres on this TR5 PI.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears in great condition for the age and mileage of the car. The panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking good, especially for a classic Triumph.

The underside of the car looks good and free from any corrosion which would cause concern, which can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The car is certainly a statement with its bright red paintwork. The finish of the paintwork is to a good standard - it looks even in colour and finish across the panels.

We did notice some very light marks in line with the age and mileage. As per the heritage certificate on this car, it originally left the factory "Valencia Blue". The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim around the rear lights of the car appears in good condition with just some light signs of pitting beginning to show. We believe the bumpers have been replaced at some point, and therefore present in great condition.

The glass looks good, with no signs of cracks or discolouration noticed, a new convertible hood has been recently fitted, and as you would expect it presents very smartly.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour of this Triumph TR5 PI.

Interior

A classic interior with many features to bring this TR5 into the twenty-first century.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with leather MX5 Tombstone seats, which look in good condition and only show slight signs of use in the form of creases. These seats are slightly wider than the originals and therefore touch against the convertible hood.

The seats, door cards, headlining and multiple layers of carpet look in good condition. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Dashboard

The dashboard features a wood veneer face and appears in good condition in line with the rest of the interior.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Moto-Lita sports steering wheel is fitted along with a Triumph badged gearstick - both items appear in great condition in line with the rest of the car.

View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

The TR5 PI took the power output from ~100BHP for the TR4, up to an impressive ~150BHP.

Engine and Gearbox

Mechanics far ahead of its time - the TR5 PI managed to outperform many other premium sports cars from the '70s. The car was fitted with a new ~152BHP 2.5L engine which was capable of achieving a top speed of 125MPH. All important to this was the Lucas fuel injection system, a carb fuelled version of the TR5 called the TR250 was available for the US market, but power output was still way down near 100BHP in comparison.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting for the first time in a couple of months, please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

Austen reports the car was fitted with upgraded Willwood brake callipers in the past, along with drilled discs on the front and drums on the rear.

He reports that the brakes provide prompt stopping power, capable of taming the high-performance 2.5L, and with suspension offering a firm yet comfortable drive, which lets the driver feel connected with the car.

The Drive

The TR5 PI is Triumph's best-kept secret, with only ~1,160 examples ever built in RHD. All the good looks from the TR4, but with a power increase of ~50% made this the fastest TR produced by Triumph.

Electrics and Other

A whole host of electrical features are fitted within the TR5 PI; rearview camera, Xtrone head unit, twin USB port, 12V port, upgraded speakers in the door cards, and in the rear shelf. These were fitted as some subtle enhancements for use touring.

Austen reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A very attractive package, a nice history file detailing work over time, restored in current ownership and importantly a home market RHD example of the TR5 PI.

A very usable classic with gorgeous Michelotti styling, the TR5 PI is sought after due to the low build numbers and impressive performance from the compact package. This car is coming out of ~6 years of ownership - the owner has thoroughly enjoyed using the car, however, due to recent lack of use has decided to pass on it on to a like-minded Triumph enthusiast.

Take a look through the extensive history file this car comes with, you'll find MOT certificates and mountains of receipts for parts and work carried out throughout its past.

Austen will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
