Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Triumph TR6 epitomises the essence of timeless British motoring with its sleek design and powerful fuel-injected engine - ahead of its time.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' was the best-seller of the TR range. Out of the ~91,850 produced, only ~8,370 were ever sold in the UK. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and doors were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5. The front and rear of the car were restyled by Karmann of Germany, yet rumours claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

Geoff has owned this lovely example for the past ~14 years, and within that time he's made subtle improvements and ensured regular maintenance was carried out, to make a reliable and very usable British classic.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Geoff the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Triumph TR6 was the one classic car I’ve always wanted to own.

Geoff first passed his test in 1970, and it wasn’t long before the Triumph TR6 caught his eye and became the one car he would love to own. Fast-forward 40 years to 2010, and the itch to own a TR6 remains. Geoff decided it was time to turn his dream into a reality and searched for an early and desirable 1969 model.

Now, 14 years on, a whole lot of fun has been had in the Triumph; it is more challenging to jump in and out of than it was 14 years ago. Geoff has had the pleasure but has now decided to part with his dream car.

Please feel free to ask Geoff any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A quintessential 1970s British icon, the Triumph TR6 underwent design enhancements at the front and rear while retaining the classic middle from the TR4 model.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with chrome wire wheels, these are generally in good condition with just a minor amount of tarnishing to a couple of the rims. A matching set of premium Uniroyal tyres is fitted, and plenty of tread remains.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The TR6 received extensive restoration in the mid-1990s, with new floors and sills fitted - the body appears to be in very good condition. All of the panels look to align well with an equal panel gap.

There are just some minor blisters on the driver's and passenger's side rear quarter, towards the front edge.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the original colour of Signal Red, the TR6 presents itself very well.

There is a small amount of micro blistering along the top of the driver’s door and onto the top of the quarter panel.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The front and rear lights look to be in good condition, with no damage to the lenses.

The bumpers have a small amount of tarnishing in keeping with the vehicle’s age.

The roof fits tightly but it does have a split in one of the plastic windows, however Geoff told us that he never drives the car in the rain and always had the hood down, so this has not been a priority to fix.

Interior

Like many classics of the day, everything inside the TR6 is there for a reason and functional.

Seats and Carpets

The vinyl seats are in very good condition with no noticeable damage. Both door cards are in good order too with minimal signs of age.

The carpets are thought to have been replaced at some point and are in good condition throughout. Lifting the boot carpet the bright Signal Red floor is very clean.

The spare wheel, jack, hammer, some spanners, and screwdrivers are present.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard is free from damage, however on the lower section the vinyl has come unstuck a little, but it would be quite easy to glue back in place. The burr walnut fascia has been replaced while in Geoff's ownership and looks in good order.

The instruments seem to be working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 53,921 miles during our visit.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The aluminium three-spoke leather steering wheel is finished with red stitching to match the exterior.

A triumph badge sits proud in the centre, this also matches the gear knob.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 2.5-litre straight-six fuel-injected engine produces a captivating soundtrack, adding to the allure of the Triumph TR6.

Engine and Gearbox

As you will see in our mechanical review video, the TR6 fires up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported.

Over the years, upgrades have been made, including a high-torque starter motor, electronic ignition, an electric fan, six new injectors, a spin-on oil filter, new engine mountings, an oil cooler, and a six-branch manifold coupled to a full stainless exhaust.

The four-speed gearbox has overdrive, operated via a stalk on the steering column. The prop shaft has also been upgraded, delivering power to the rear wheels via the reconditioned differential.

Suspension and Brakes

The TR6 sits very nicely and handling has been improved with poly bushes to help give a more precise feel through the wheel.

The brakes are working as expected, and Geoff hasn’t reported any issues bringing the car to a stop.

The Drive

Being behind the wheel of the Triumph TR6 is a wonderful experience.

This 70s classic boasts a stunning appearance and offers great handling, coupled with an exhilarating sound when you firmly press of the accelerator.

Please watch the On the Road video to see the car being driven around the local area.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear is in very good condition, with no real signs of age to the lettering on the switches. The only thing Geoff mentioned was that the blower switch doesn’t work, but this has not been investigated.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

With ~14 years of ownership and ~£13,000 spent - this 1969 TR6 appears to have been very well cared for.

The paperwork file for the TR6 is an impressive read. It shows regular servicing and various parts purchased over the years, some dating back to 1990. Several MOT certificates also show regular but relatively low use while in Geoff’s ownership.

This is a lovely, well cared for example in what we think is probably one of the best colours for the iconic Triumph TR6.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
