Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

This born-again Stag could be considered as one of the best early cars on the market today.

The Michelotti designed Triumph Stag, a purposefully styled V8 GT car captured the hearts of the British public. That love is still ever present today, with a large following of enthusiasts in the classic car scene. The sound and drive on these convertible tourers enough to ensure that the model lives on strong to this day.

This particular car has seen the benefits of continuous mechanical upgrades along with its considerable body restoration. Documented as one of the earliest surviving cars, this example comes with a stack of history but also documentation and photos of a major restoration in 2018 (bills of ~£27,000 included). It would not be an exaggeration to suggest that this 1970 car is one of the best Stags currently on the market.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Rick the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We really went to town with this car, and wanted to make it as good as we possibly could.

Rick and his wife Sue bought the car in 2017 and promptly spent the next couple of years restoring it at a considerable cost. As well as replacing sections of the floor pan, every last trace of rust was cut out and replaced with good metal, with plenty of attention also spent on the running gear, trim and detailing of the car.

The end result, as the images and video will testify was worth the effort. The car was used for occasional weekend breaks and local car shows.

Exterior

The exterior presentation is stunning. A classic Triumph colour and bodywork that's hard to beat.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with refurbished Kent Stag alloys are corrosion-free and in great shape. The car comes with the original spec steel wheels too.

The Bridgestone tyres are all in great condition.Although they are all older than 10 years old they have plenty of life in them. Take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Bodywork

The body has been subject to bare metal restoration, so it would be safe to assume that the build quality, panel gaps and fit are likely to be better than when the car was new.

The car is free from any signs of damage or rust. The underside is straight and solid. The canvas roof has a handful of blemishes on the rear left-hand side corner but raises and lowers with no issues. The plastic perspex windows are clear with no evidence of age. The car comes with a body-coloured hardtop and comes with a stand as pictured.

Paint

The paintwork has been applied to the body with the utmost professionalism, it has a deep lustre throughout and the finish cannot be faulted. As a result, we didn't observe any blemishes, with no evidence of chips, scratches or scuffs.

The car was originally finished in Sienna (Brown) when new, it was resprayed yellow in 2005 but the owner has resprayed the car back to its original factory colour as part of the restoration.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with no flaws to report, the door and glass rubbers have no perishing or splits. The brightwork and trim on the car are very good, with no evidence of corrosion or pitting.

Interior

Subject to a complete overhaul 20 years ago, the interior has worn its years very well.

Seats and Carpets

The saddle tan interior is quite something in this Stag. You'll often see interiors looking tired, vinyl seats splitting etc, but this cabin looks luxurious.

The paperwork suggests that much of it was reupholstered and renewed in 2000. As a result, the seats are in good condition with a limited amount of wear. The door cards are very good, with no evidence of sagging material. The carpets have worn well with no damage. The car comes with Triumph mats.

Dashboard

The overall condition of the dashboard is excellent. Just some minor signs of the walnut cracking but all part of the character of the car.

The switches and controls are also fully functional and are in good condition with minimal sign of wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both the Steering wheel and gear stick are in great condition with no signs of damage or significant wear. Items that are likely to have been replaced over time on this example.

Mechanics

A strong V8 that has been maintained and upgraded to ensure it continues to delight.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bursts into life with no spluttering or reluctance during the cold start, the V8 pounding soundly. There was no evidence of smoke from the exhaust after the initial start. The engine has been rebuilt to Rimmer Brothers/Wychwood spec, which also includes a Kenlow fan and electronic ignition.

The car was originally fitted with the automatic gearbox, but has now been fitted with the 4 speed manual with overdrive option, a much more fitting combination for this car we think.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes are fully functional, and visually in good condition. Along with the suspension, it has been subject to recent renewal. All of the running gear is said to operate with no issues.

The Drive

With much of the car subject to rejuvenation, the drive and experience of the car must be more of a pleasure today than when it was new, simply as the original owners would have suffered the anxiety of wondering what would go wrong next.

The renewed running gear components, the reconditioned engine and knowing that you are sitting in a completely restored car should be enough to give you confidence to really enjoy this Stag.

Electrics and Other

Following the restoration of the car, the electrical components would have also been subject to renewal. With some useful engine electronics upgrades, the car should not give any headaches.

History and Paperwork

This is one rare Stag - it's the 30th Stag to leave the production line.

The car comes with a considerable amount of paperwork, suggesting that all of the previous owners have spent a considerable amount of time and care over the car. It comes with a Heritage Certificate, which confirms the car as one of the oldest examples in the country. Most recently, Rick and his wife had a bare mental restoration actioned in 2018 at a cost of ~£27,000, putting the car back to it's original Sienna Brown colour.

The car has also been subject to three engines in its lifetime, the current block is a Rimmer/Wychwood unit which was replaced in 1983 at 82,598 miles. This engine is also an early engine dating from September 1971. The car was subject to a major restoration by MG Mecca in 2018, which included a complete stripdown and metal fabrication of the body and chassis. Prior to this recent work, it was subject to restoration in 2006 and going back further, saw regular maintenance which is supported by Rimmer Bros paperwork going back to the late '90s. Furthermore, there are invoices that stretch back to the '80s. If that wasn't enough bedtime reading for you, then you can marvel at the original handbook too.

The car comes with the hard-top and a stand for storage too.

We have actioned checks on the following; Seller ID, V5, HPi.

Hi – did reply earlier All panels solid or replaced – see bills. Roadworthy but hard top stand and original wheels will have to be transported

Hi.
If I am fortunate enough to win this auction, due to my location I would have to arrange collection and delivery with the likes of Shiply. How long would you be prepared to store the car post auctions whilst such arrangements are finalised?
Thank you.
Best regards
Craig H

If everything goes through I have no problem storing in my garage where the car lived for 4 years

Sorry but this car is not the fourth oldest known survivor. There are at least 20 others which are older than this one. Also, I doubt very much if the engine is LF 45 HE as this is the number of the original engine and that has been superceded a few times. Please amend the advert as it makes misleading claims and this is illegal in an auction situation.

Hi Peter. Sorry about the fourth oldest. That was taken off an old letter. Will remove that reference. The engine is the third and that number LF2120HE is shown

That’s fine Rick, but the Key Details section at the bottom of the advert still shows LF 45 HEBW. Could you amend please ?
