Introduction

Alan Stuart
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Muscular, stylish and nimble – the TR6 was the pinnacle of the much-loved traditional TR styling.

Styled by Karmann of Germany the TR6 was first introduced in the UK for the 1969 model year. The car built on the tradition of the historic TR range in terms of both styling and fundamental engineering. Sporting more masculine lines than its predecessors, the TR6 was highly successful with the vast majority being exported to the US. Nearly ~92,000 cars were built over a 7-year production run.

The TR6 commands a strong following among enthusiasts in the UK. Offering a factory specified 120MPH top speed and 0-60 in a shade over 8 seconds, coupled with legendary handling it is well able to hold its own in modern traffic. The cars still look, sound, and drive fantastically.

This lovely example has been improved by current owner, Richard. It comes to auction after 4 years ownership having been imported from the USA in 2019. Presented in beautiful “Carmine Red” over a black leather interior the car has been sensibly upgraded to electronic fuel injection and has a programmable ECU. These improvements, combined with uprated brakes and rear suspension make this TR6 and eminently driveable classic.

This really is a delightful example form the classic era of British convertibles. But, don’t just take our word for it - take a look at the high resolution photos and videos to judge this lovely car for yourself.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love this car – it looks great, drives fantastically and has been an absolute pleasure to own.

Richard imported this car from the US in January 2019 and set about making extensive improvements to it, he tells us, “I’ve always loved the TR6 and searched for a long time before finding the right example. It was in exactly the colour I wanted and, coming from the US was completely rust free”.

Richard goes on to say, “I wanted to improve the day-to-day usability, so I installed electronic fuel injection and a programmable ECU. I’ve also improved the braking and fitted Spax shocks to the rear. It’s had a reconditioned gearbox fitted and the engine and running gear have been thoroughly overhauled and a great many new parts fitted – it’s been a real labour of love and I’m absolutely delighted with the result”.

The original intention was for Richard to use the car in Spain – however, plans have now changed so a new owner will get the chance to enjoy this delightful classic.

Richard knows this car inside out and will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Karmann styled, flowing lines with a purposeful edge – entirely in keeping with the best of TR tradition.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” pressed steel wheels, stainless steel rims and Triumph branded centre caps look in great condition with only a few marks and no kerb damage that we could see. The wheels are fitted with Avon 195/65 R15 Tyres all round which look in very good condition and appear to have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car looks solid and purposeful with clean lines. It stands straight, shut lines look good and bonnet, boot and both doors open and close cleanly and precisely.

The hood looks in good condition and opens and closes as is should. Richard confirms the hood is watertight. Overall, the bodywork on this car presents very well.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Carmen Red" paint suits the car perfectly and retains a deep, even shine right across the car. There are the very occasional stone chips, swirl marks and small scratches and a little bubbling to the bottom of the offside door, but these really are very minor flaws and we had to search for them - overall, the car looks lovely.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows and rear hood screen all look good, and we could see few signs of chips, scratches, or other flaws. Likewise, lights, lenses and mirrors all look in good shape.

Chromework is generally in good condition and headlight surrounds and some badging have been replaced. Some of the brightwork, most notably the front bumper, is showing the inevitable, age related, minor pitting and is dulled slightly as a result.

Interior

Burr walnut dash, black leather seats and a full suite of Smiths clocks – this cabin is a great place to spend a summers day.

Seats and Carpets

In common with many TR6 enthusiasts, Richard has retrofitted the car with black leather MX5 seats. These are in sound condition with no rips or significant marks that we could see. They are also supremely comfortable.

Importantly the original seats do come with the car and Richard is happy to fit them if the new owner prefers.

The black carpets present well showing little sign of wear.

The door cards and other interior trim appears in generally sound condition.

Dashboard

Beautiful – the new burr walnut dash and suite of clear Smiths dials look superb. The switchgear looks in good condition with nothing broken that we could see. Richard assures us that everything works exactly as it should.

The vinyl at the top of the dash presents well - there's just some very small splits in the vinyl at the base to the left of the steering column.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original style, 3 spoke slotted steering wheel looks good, as does the Triumph badged centre boss, indicator stalk and overdrive switch.

Mechanics

2.5-litre Triumph six pot is good for delivering 150BHP to the rear wheels through a 4 speed, overdrive gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

Set in a very clean engine bay the 2.5L, straight six has been sensibly upgraded with electronic fuel injection and programmable ECU. A new alternator, uprated starter motor, reconditioned gearbox and stainless-steel exhaust also feature among the many improvements Richard has made to the car.

On our cold start the car fired up easily and idled steadily while emissions appeared clear. There was some hesitation on idle and occasionally on our brief test drive which Richard put down to a dirty spark plug, and has assured us will be remedied before the car is sold.

The overdrive feature is a later J type, which has a higher ratio of +24% compared to the earlier A type of +18%.

Suspension and Brakes

With the traditional separate chassis sports car set up, independent rear suspension and front disc brakes the TR6 was renowned for light, precise and sporty handling.

Adding Spax shock absorbers on the rear, new brake servo and pads and shoes, Richard has added assurance to this already classic set up.

The Drive

On the road the TR6 displayed the best in British sports car tradition. It felt planted and sure footed while offering great flexibility from the combination of that lovely straight six and overdrive transmission set up.

The car pulled well, steering appeared light and precise, and brakes stopped the car quickly and evenly without pulling to either side.

Electrics and Other

Standard electrics are straightforward on cars of this era - all switchgear looked undamaged and Richard advises us that everything is in full working order.

On our brief test drive all dials and gauges appeared to be functioning correctly.

History and Paperwork

A chance to own a great example of one of Triumph's true classics – and in LHD form it gives the flexibility (and excuse) for European driving trips.

A lovely TR6 that is suited towards continental driving and has benefitted from extensive overhaul and mechanical restoration work, as well as some well-chosen upgrades.

The car comes with extensive receipts detailing the meticulous work Richard has undertaken over the last four years – the result is an absolute credit to him.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Richard
Has the car been put on a rolling road?
Also I plan to use the car quite a lot with a trip around Scotland and then on to Europe.
Possibly up to six thousand miles.
Would you be confident in this car to make this kind of journey,
After an initial check over.
You mentioned the hood being watertight would it stand up to Scottish weather?
Is the head unleaded?
If not what additive do you use?
Happily if I do get the car I only live in Eastbourne so not far.

One other thing what is the car painted In cellulose or two pack?

Regards Stuart
