Introduction

Dom Ginn
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

The Stag is elegant, powerful, luxurious and above all beautiful – this restored car is a stunning example.

Launched in 1970 the Triumph Stag met with approval from both the motoring press and the public. The Michelotti styled four seat, two door convertible was like nothing else from a British manufacturer at the time. Based on a shortened 2000 floorpan, the Stag was Triumph's first unitary construction sports car. It was strong, luxurious and powerful.

All original Stags were powered by Triumph's own 3-litre V8 and offered with either automatic or manual transmission with overdrive. Stags are immensely popular classics today and of the 17,819 originally produced for the UK market, around 8,300 remain registered with the DVLA – a remarkable survival rate of around 46%.

A Stag appeared in the 1971 film "Diamonds are Forever" - so, good enough for James Bond!

This beautiful example has it all. As well as being magnificently restored, it has the most sought-after specification of an original car - a V8 engine and manual gearbox with overdrive. Rebuilt in 2007 the car has covered fewer than ~8,000 miles since 2008.

Finished in a glorious red over a black interior and in great condition, this Stag is a real credit to its owner.

We have taken plenty of high-resolution photos and videos of this beautifully restored example - please do take a look and judge for yourself.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the look, the luxury, the driving experience and the sound – Stags really are a special car.

Chris always wanted a Stag and spent some time looking for the right example.

Chris told us, “…having looked at several, this was the car I chose due to the restoration work that had been done and the owners love of the vehicle”.

He goes on to say.

“It runs well and is reliable, the engine makes a lovely sound, and the drive is excellent. Gear change is smooth the overdrive works well. I have two dogs now and free time is spent walking them rather than driving my beloved Stag, it is not being driven the way it deserves to be.”.

Chris will be happy to answer any questions about his car in the comments section below

Exterior

Recognisable anywhere – the Stag is an unmistakeable member of the Triumph family yet, somehow, endearingly unique.

Wheels and Tyres

The 14-inch alloy wheels with black painted insets look in great condition with no significant kerb marks. The central Stag logo looks fantastic, and the wheels overall show very little sign of wear.

The tyres look in good condition with no apparent cracking on the outside and they have good tread remaining.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and doors, bonnet and boot all open and close exactly as they should. There appears to be no distortion on the panels and the hood opens and closes properly. Chris confirms the hood is leak free.

This is a great example and we’ve taken plenty of pictures and videos - do take a look and see how good this car actually is.

Paint

Bright red paintworks appears even and consistent with a deep shine right across the car. There are one or two age related marks, but we really did have to search for them.

Overall, the standard of paintwork on this car looks excellent

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, side windows, mirrors and lenses all appear in good shape with no issues to note. Chrome looks excellent with no signs of corrosion or pitting, and badging looks great with only minor signs of ageing on the rear wing badges.

Interior

Well, it’s a Triumph – stunning wooden dash and clear unmarked dials make this a luxurious yet sporty interior.

Seats and Carpets

Black leather seats look great and appear virtually unused. Carpets, renewed as part of the restoration still look in very good condition, as does the remaining interior trim – do take a look at the interior video and photos to see for yourself

Dashboard

Immaculate Smiths gauges set in the wooden dash look fantastic and everything appears in great shape.

All switches, dials and gauges appear in very good condition.

Chris assures us everything works exactly as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Lovely, wood rimmed, drilled alloy, aftermarket steering wheel looks fantastic and really suits the car. Chris fitted this steering wheel himself but has retained the original if the new owner would prefer to refit it.

The gear lever, with incorporated overdrive switch, is in good condition as is the wood finished centre console.

Do check out the videos and photos – we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Mechanics

Triumph's own 145bhp, 3.0-litre, V8 delivers 0-60 in 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 117 mph – pretty good, even by today’s standards.

Engine and Gearbox

Smooth Triumph V8 power is transferred to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive on 3rd and top gears.

The paperwork contains confirmation from the previous owner that a reconditioned engine and overdrive were installed as part of the restoration in 2007.

Suspension and Brakes

We understand new brakes were fitted as part of the restoration. The Stag has discs on the front and drums at the rear which should provide ample stopping power for a car of this era.

On our brief test drive with Chris the car appeared to pull up evenly and we could detect no sign of vibration or judder.

The Drive

What a way to spend a few minutes on a sunny day! The stag was smooth, comfortable and quiet with a real sense of sporting promise.

The V8 provided an amazing soundtrack, gear changes were slick and smooth, steering seemed precise and certain while the car felt planted and surefooted.

Take a look at the On the Road Video to share in the brief drive we took with Chris.

Electrics and Other

While electrics are relatively uncomplicated on these cars, Chris confirmed everything works exactly as it should. The car is fitted with an aftermarket Radio/CD which we understand is in good working order.

History and Paperwork

Beautifully restored inside and out and presented in stunning red, this Stag has the potential to make 2022 a summer to remember.

If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Triumph Stag this could be the one. Stunning colourway, beautiful interior, extensive mechanical restoration and all in the most desirable package with an original Triumph V8 and manual gearbox with overdrive.

The paperwork includes a lovely note from a previous owner detailing the restoration, original owners’ folder, receipts for repair work, previous MOT certificates and photographs of some of the work carried out.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Chris, Is the back of the front passenger seat damaged?

Dear Chris,
Nice car but its a shame that it is a ringer. The shell is all Mk 2 whereas the registration and chassis number is for a Mk 1 car. The chassis plate is a reproduction. Any buyer should be very careful and understand what this means as it is illegal to swap chassis numbers on monocoque cars.

Hi there, I have a couple of questions about the stag. Do you know what the mileage was before the new odometer was fitted. Also was the colour changed when the respray was done or has it always been red. Finally in the photos the fuse box cover seems missing, is there a reason why?
Thanks
