Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Last of the old school TR Triumphs, the TR6 was a worthy send-off with its sharp chisel-chinned exterior and fuel injected engines.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' was the best-seller of the TR range. Out of the ~91,850 produced, only ~8,370 were ever sold in the UK. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and door were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5, the design of the front and rear of the car was restyled by Karmann of Germany, yet rumors claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

This is a really special and unique TR6, a UK RHD home market car that has mechanically modified specifically for hill climbing races. It's coming out of 9 years ownership, and features an engine with a Bill Blydenstein head, and lots of work to the engine components too, resulting in a quote output of 174BHP when completed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Jez the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I stumbled across this unique race prepped TR6 9 years ago, ~6,000 miles later it's now time for someone else to enjoy.

After looking high and low for a TR6, Jez stumbled across this Emerald Green example. The seller had just finished preparing the car for hillclimb racing. The extra power and chassis set-up caught his attention, and he's loved driving the car ever since.

Jez has only done ~1,000 miles over the past couple of years, he spends a fair bit of time abroad and so has decided someone else should put the car to use like he did when he first bought it. He will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A new sharp chisel-jaw by Karmann's design team created arguably the best-looking TR ever.

Wheels and Tyres

These 15" silver painted wheels with red TR6 caps look great on this example. Steels wheels rather than wire-wheels is definitely the way to go when you have a racier example. When we got really close to the wheels we notice some very slight signs of age as pictured.

The car is fitted with Pirelli Vizzola's and the rubber appears in good condition, however, is starting to show slight signs of age with some minor areas of cracking on the tread. Please take a look at the bodywork in the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very straight on this TR6, all the panel gaps look good, and Jez reports the car doors open and close with ease.

Jez reports that new floor pans were fitted, and the inner and outer sills repaired, outer wings, inner wings during the restoration period around 2010. He mentioned no work was necessary on the chassis, and therefore it appears highly original and solid with rear tips appearing a little bit thin.

The car features a black-out back panel, we did notice a very minor area of wear on the passenger's door jam, and the vinyl soft-top appears in great condition as it was replaced 2010.

Paint

The car was completely repainted in its original Emerald Green (colour code 65) in 2009. The finish of the paint is good and even in coverage around the car. We notice a little scratch in the driver's door that has had a little green tape placed to cover up the mark.

Take a look at the videos and photos for a detailed view.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim on the whole, are in very good condition with no issues worth pointing out. The chrome work shows hardly any signs of pitting, and the trim looks very good around the car along with the rubber seals for the windows.

Interior

A classic British interior finished in black with wood veneer dash, the familiarity makes it an easy place to get settled.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted are low-back Cobra bucket seats, they appear in good condition and are finished in black leather. Both seats do show a little wear in line with the age and mileage, there are marks to both seats from the hood mechanism rubbing, and a small tear in the driver's bolster.

The door cards appear in good condition, along with the hood lining. New carpets and door cards were fitted to the car in 2010.

Dashboard

All dials and switches are in good condition along with the wood dash. The dials are begining to show the slightest signs of patina, inline with the age and mileage of this TR6.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with a 14" Moto-Lita steering wheel that just completes the interior and looks in great condition. Wrapped in leather, it offers a lot more grip and control than the stock item and really looks the part. A silver aftermarket gear changer has also been fitted, with nicely pairs with the steering wheel.

Mechanics

This isn't any TR6, this is a rare race-prepared TR6 with Bill Blydenstein head.

Engine and Gearbox

The TR6's are typically powered by Triumphs 2.5L straight-6 with the same Lucas mechanical injectors as the TR5, with a carb only fitted for the US models. This isn't any normal TR6 though, this car has a unique race-prepared engine. It features a non-matching CP engine, built to race specification in 1995. The engine includes a tuftrided crank, high lift cam, stainless valves, aluminium bronze guides, and lightened flywheel. The cylinder head is a Bill Blydenstein gas flowered race spec.

The car also includes a high-performance Magnaspark electronic ignition, distributor cap, red rotor, extractor manifold, a stainless system with a custom Milltek rear silencer fitted, and a Red Devil high-performance coil setup was also supplied from the Distributor Doctor.

On our visit, we noticed the slightest weep around the sump gasket. Take a look at the history and paperwork for more details on the parts and service history. The clutch master cylinder was replaced at ~97,400 miles and the engine rebuilt along with the rear diff. The gearbox was rebuilt in 1993, and has overdrive in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set up for a TR6 is a semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension, with discs brakes at the front and drums at the rear. However as you would expect with this car being set-up for hillclimb racing, it had new Gaz adjustable shocks and lowered springs fitted with rear shock mounting brackets. Set up was completed by Carlow engineering, Triumph race preparation specialists in 2011.

In 2010 new brakes were fitted all around, including discs, drums, and wheel cylinder kits. The front callipers were overhauled and various brake pipes/braided hoses were fitted were required. A new brake master cylinder was also fitted.

The Drive

A lack of use more recently is exactly the reason that Jez is selling, this car with its performance upgrades deserves to be driven.

Electrics and Other

The front half of the wiring loom replaced in 1995, at ~96,300 miles. Jez reports that everything is working to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

Built with one goal in mind, to be a hillclimb champion, this unique UK RHD home market TR6 packs an extra punch over stock examples.

The car comes with a good amount of original history of all the work carried out over the years. Scans of the receipts, MOT's and work carried out can be found in the photos below.

When the work was completed, the car was outputting ~174BHP when tested, that's a lot of power for what is a relatively small roadster. Suspension upgraded too to cater for that power and with hillclimbs in mind, this is a great car for someone looking for something a bit different with that extra zip compared to a standard TR6.

Hi 🙂 I would like to know if there are any known mechanical or electrical faults.

Also, other than rust on driver’s door, if there is any body work that is needed, related to rust, accident or otherwise.

Thanks !

Hello, thanks for your message. There are no known mechanical or electrical faults. The bodywork is very solid and there’s no rust at all. Cheers
