Classic British style with a touch of luxury, its V8 engine and sleek design making it one of the most charismatic grand tourers of its era.

The Triumph Stag, crafted by renowned Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, first launched in 1970 and stood apart as something truly unique from a British manufacturer. Built on a shortened Triumph 2000 floorpan, it was the marque’s first unitary construction sports car - a four-seat, two-door luxury tourer that combined strength, power, and refinement.

The Stag quickly won over the public and critics alike, with its elegant styling, smooth power delivery, and richly appointed interior earning praise from the motoring press. By 1974, it had cemented its place as a true icon of British motoring, admired for its rare combination of grand touring comfort and sporting performance.

The particular Stag has had a good deal of work completed over the last few years. Engine and gearbox work was carried out in 2022 - this included a rebuild of the engine and cylinder head, replacement of the water pump, and a new big end bearing set, among other items. The work cost in excess of £6,700. Restorative works have also been carried out on the cabin seats which have been re-trimmed in 'Birch Cream' leather. The wheels were also replaced with the multi-spoke examples shown in 2019.

Coming fresh-to-market with a little work is required on this example, mainly on the paintwork to bring it up to a higher standard, but it is perfectly useable and well worth a closer look at what's on offer considering the low reserve.

Meet the owner

Such a great sense of occasion every time you drive it - the V8 soundtrack, the convertible roof for summer drives - it always puts a smile on your face.

The current owner, Zhengmao, has been a fan of classic cars for as long as he can remember, he told us, "I’ve always admired the Triumph Stag’s unique blend of British styling and Italian design influences together with the V8 character. It’s a true classic grand tourer - elegant, practical as a 2+2, and with a wonderful presence on the road".

Having travelled relatively few miles since he has owned the car, Zhengmao tells us more about his experience with the Stag, he said, "It’s a relaxed yet characterful drive - plenty of torque from the V8, smooth cruising, and a real sense of classic motoring charm. It feels planted and confidence-inspiring, and has a really classic feel to it".

With less time on his hands than before, the car comes to market with us, finally Zhengmao said, "I’ve enjoyed my time with the car immensely, but it’s time for a new custodian to enjoy it. I’m focusing on other projects and don’t have the space to keep it as well as I’d like".

Exterior

With its sleek lines, T-bar roof, and unmistakable presence, the Stag shows its elegance and sporty flair beautifully, turning heads wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

The Stag is fitted with a set of 15" 72-spoke wire wheels. These are in good condition but did show a few signs of age and some tarnishing to the finish. These were replaced in July 2019 at a cost of over ~£990.

The front and rear of the Triumph is fitted with Blockley tyres. These are date coded from 2017 to the front, 2018 at the rear and appeared to show a good amount of tread left - both sets of tyres showed a spec of 185/70.

Bodywork

The car stands straight and doors, bonnet and boot all opening and closing as they should.

While the car presents very well, some bodywork imperfections can be seen in the images. Additionally, there is a small split on the inside edge of the driver’s side A-pillar.

Paint

The 'Damson Red' paint (Code 17) coverage is even across the car; however, the exterior does show some signs of wear and could benefit from attention at the discretion of the new owner. There are stone chips on the front and rear wheel arches, paint cracking around the indicator lights, minor marks on the boot lid, a handful of chips across the front, and some roughness around the edges of the glass.

The car was coloured brown in December 1984.

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the Stag showed in good condition with no major cause for concern. Windscreen and side windows all look decent with no significant scratching, marks or chips.

The finish on the soft top roof shows in great condition and without issue. The perspex window section to the rear of the soft top shows well too and without cracking or damage.

Chrome is generally good - there are few sections that could do with attention, particularly the door handles and wing mirrors.

The front and rear lights looked good with the rear lamp lenses replaced in March 2019.

Badges and emblems are present and look good.

The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Rubber sections on the interior edges looked good but showed a few signs of wear, which is to be expected.

Interior

Blending 70s style with grand touring comfort, the interior features plush seating, wood trim, and a distinct charm that makes every drive feel special.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished with 'Birch Cream' leather with red piping trim. All seats in the car look to be in good condition with little sign of wear although would benefit from a clean over to bring the standard up further. The seats were restored in March 2019 at a cost of ~£438.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed in good condition, and looking underneath these, the main floor sections showed without concern. The carpets look good but would benefit from a clean in some areas. The boot showed in reasonable condition and has a wood trim base. Some of the trim was coming away from the boot interior and there were several marks here.

Dashboard

The main dash area across the Stag showed in respectable condition with the walnut burr finish to the panelling a great highlight. We did note the black top of the dash showed cracking on the passenger side edge and wear on the section in front of the driver.

Clocks and dials showed in a good condition although the chrome surrounds did show signs of age to the finish. The odometer showed with ~26,293 miles at the time of our visit. We noted no warning lights on the display when the car was on the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood rim steering wheel is free from any major wear. It showed in really presentable condition, with a smart 3 spoke setup and Flashpower branding in the centre.

The automatic gear selector lever is in good condition, as is the wood finished centre console surround.

'ON THE ROAD' VIDEO

Mechanics

Under the bonnet, the 3.0L V8 engine delivers smooth performance with a throaty rasp from the exhaust, that gives the car its unmistakable character.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns, and the Triumph performed without issue when running and out on the road.

The automatic gearbox worked smoothly on the road, with no real concerns - the gearing showed no issue regarding its performance while driving.

We took the car out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the Stag through the gears and getting an overview from Zhengmao's perspective on how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks or bangs from the suspension when we were on the road in the car, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. The Triumph had over ~£1,000 spent on its suspension and other works in August 2025.

The brakes bring the car to a halt in a straight line, with no juddering reported through the pedal. The stopping power and control worked as expected, and were in line with our expectations.

The Drive

Driving a Triumph Stag is all about character and charm. With its throaty V8 engine, distinctive exhaust note, and open-top cruising ability, the Stag delivers a uniquely enjoyable experience.

A classic of its era, it blends style, comfort, and effortless touring making it a rewarding car to drive and a pleasure to own.

The Stag is genuinely comfortable, a relatively rare factor for the era, and provides a good amount of space for both drivers and passengers alike.

Please take a moment to watch the On the Road video to see the car being taken for a local drive. During the conversation our consigner did comment on the low mileage of the vehicle, however, of course this can't be verified with the paperwork supplied.

Electrics and Other

Being a '70s car the setup is relatively simple in the cabin area. The CD player system had been removed before our review so we were unable to test this feature when visiting the car.

The wiring was on show where the CD player used to sit.

Zhengmao told us that that he's had no issues with the electrical elements of the car, and confirms everything, to his knowledge, is working as it should.

History and Paperwork

With a new starter motor, fuel pump and updates to the suspension, this Stag is well equipped for many more miles ahead.

Coming to market from almost a year with Zhengmao, the current owner, he has invested in the Stag to keep it in good running order. Key works and maintenance here has included a replacement starter motor, upgraded fuel pump, new half shaft, upgraded shock absorbers, road spring with all bushings and joints being checked and replaced.

Works on the engine and gearbox were completed in 2022. Amongst other items, the engine and cylinder head was rebuilt, water pump changed, new big end bearing set. Works here cost over ~£6,700.
