Introduction

Tom Brett
Content Editor

A lively 3.0L V8 upfront, with 2+2 seating arrangement, get the top down and pedal to the metal to hear that V8 roar.

Produced in Coventry from 1970-1977, around 26,000 Stags were made. It was a new format and form for the brand, and is true British classic.

This one has been under the caring ownership of Neil for the last 5 years, and features a 3-speed automatic gearbox, perfect for the summer cruise. You'll see the dedication he has put into the Stag making it a truly commendable example; exterior restoration in 2016, interior refurbishment, and importantly major works on the mechanical aspects from the engine through to the brakes.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Neil, the owner, and having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved using the Stag and so glad that I refurbished it through my ownership.

Owned by Neil for some 5 years, he has had most of the car overhauled and even treated it to a bare metal respray in 2016. He has driven around 3,000 miles here and there, enjoying the Stag on the sunny days. Neil has invoices of all the work he has carried out available which include a full mechanical overhaul in addition to the respray, this is a Stag ready to use from the get go.

Exterior

Set in the Triumph Stag Magenta colour, the convertible 2+2 has that classic 70s British appeal.

Wheels and Tyres

Factory Stag 5 spoke alloys, that classic style looks great on this car. Wrapped in a set of Firestone tyres all round, these were fitted last year at ~90,300 miles, only travelling around ~700 miles since.

All look in excellent condition, take a look through the media to see the detail.

Bodywork

Across the whole car, the panels are very good, shut lines looking straight with no dents across the car. The front and rear bumpers were replaced prior to the respray.

The colour matched hard-top was repainted at the same time as the car, leaving the whole package in excellent condition.

Paint

The magenta paint (original factory colour) is one that most Stag enthusiasts will be familiar with. The finish looks sublime, even across the whole car.

The gold pinstripe detailing adds the signature touch to this famous British sports convertible.

Glass and Trim

All in very good condition with no issues from our observation, the chrome trim shines proudly in good weather. Neil tells us the door frame trims have also been replaced, as you'll see in the interior gallery.

Interior

The original interior is in very good condition, a testament to the refurbishment Neil had actioned on this Stag.

Seats and Carpets

Neil had new cushions fitted into the seats, the original seat covers were professionally cleaned and re-fitted, the seats look great.

The carpets and matting all look good too, a car that has been kept in good order over the past 5 years.

Dashboard

The typical wooden dash you find in these examples looks great with very few signs of ageing present. All gauges look to be original and fit precisely.

Along with the seat refurbishment, the door cards were replaced to give the whole cabin a very smart appearance.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both looking in line with the rest of the cabin, very smart in appearance in matching black trim.

Mechanics

Triumph's own 3.0L V8, pushing out 145BHP, this car has had lots of important work completed on it.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.0L V8 was able to produce 145hp with a top speed of 118mph on release, impressive for a car of its value and age.

As mentioned, Neil has overhauled a lot of the car. The engine bay looks really clean and is a testament to Neil for commissioning remedial and replacement work. Carburettors have been stripped, overhauled and reset. Full engine tuning has taken place that includes replacement leads, distributor cap and coil along with a new “point style” transistorised ignition system. A new cooling system with 16” cooling fan, starter motor, alternator and fuel pump were also fitted.

Coming with the usual 3 speed Borg-Warner “35” automatic gearbox. We are assured by Neil the gears change as expected.

Suspension and Brakes

A complete suspension overhaul took place including replacements of springs, shock absorbers, struts, mountings, bushes and ball joints etc. Neil tells us the car is free from any knocks, bumps or rattles. The underside looks free from any corrosion as we believe Neil had much of this seen to under his ownership.

Furthermore, a brake system overhaul with replacement rear brake cylinders, new front to rear metal brake pipes, all flexible pipes, brake shoes and brake pads has taken place.

The Drive

Easy driving is the way of this car, the automatic gearbox allows for effortless driving.

With many engine/ignition repairs made, the Stag looks to be highly reliable example that the new owner will be able to enjoy.

Electrics and Other

All electrical functionalities on the car work as expected with no issues. A new battery has been fitted recently too.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of 5 years ownership, and an extensive exterior restoration in 2016, this is a lovely example of a Stag.

Neil has really put this car to a top condition. He has a wealth of invoices and old MOTs from previous owners describing the car's history well. All information stated in the listing is in relation through what Neil has told us about refurbishing the car through his ownership.

As a true classic, the Triumph Stag is exempt from road tax and mandatory MOT requirements, but Neil has actioned an MOT in June for that peace of mind. This is a superb example with 3 former keepers, the owner one prior to Neil owning the car for a very long 37 years.

The car comes with MOTs dating back to 1977, which Neil tells us enables a charting of the mileage up to the current day. Neil informs us that the car is fitted with the original engine too, adding further to the provenance.

Checks carried out by us:

- Photo ID of seller.
- V5 checked against seller's photo ID.
- HPi checked and clear.

Good evening, she looks great. Can I ask when the timing chain was last changed? Many thanks.

I have to say I don’t know except that I believe it was incorporated with the “lead free conversion” to the cylinder head in 1999.

Thanks, two more questions please!
When was she last serviced and how is her running temperature?

It’s funny you say “her” It’s a him to me!!! He had a lubrication service last year. Rear brake shoes and cylinders replaced in 2018. The cooling system is modified with a higher header tank and an additional electric cooling fan. The engine running temperature stays mid way, only increasing when stuck in motorway traffic when the auxiliary cooling fan brings it back to normal.

Thanks for the info.

My Dad taught me that all cars were female, though it would not be nice to repeat the reasons he gave!!

Is the Stag running on leaded or unleaded?

Neil

It runs on unleaded petrol. The Stag had a “lead free conversion” to the cylinder head by the previous owner in1999

Hi Neil, the car looks great, but can you tell me why the coaching line on the front driver’s side is up the other way from the rest of the car?

Neil

Neil

Well – I just had to go in the garage and check and your correct – The Stag was painted in 2016 and I have never noticed. There’s nothing been done to the bodywork since but fortunately there is sufficient spare body tape!!!!

Thanks Neil. Good to know that some tape is available.

I may have sent this twice?? – Just had to go into the garage to check and yes you are certainly correct. The Stag was painted in 2016 and I have never noticed that bit of strip. Fortunately I have a sufficient length coach line left !!

Hi,
Re. the rear window
Is it creased or damaged (hard to tell from photograph)?
Thanks, Trev

No it’s not damaged – yes you get a crease in it when you first put it up but it soon stretches out. Also I put a piece of soft cloth between the plastic when it’s folded away and that prevents it cracking.

Hi Neil. Has any welding work been carried out? Id be amazed if not. If so. Can you tell me what has been done and when. Thanks

Neil

Neil

During my ownership there has been no welding done and when the Stag was resprayed there was no sign on the bodywork. The previous owner had some bodywork undertaken in the 90,s but at present there is no sign of any corrosion.

Has the engine/g.box had a rebuild

As far as I’m aware no. The previous owner had the Cylinder heads modified to take lead free petrol in the 90’s.
