Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A natural cruiser, this restored Michelotti masterpiece is ready to be driven and enjoyed this summer.

The Triumph Stag production began in 1970 and last for 8 years, manufactured by the British Triumph Motor Company and styled by Giovanni Michelotti - a very talented Italian designer. The Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer and packs a punch with its 3.0L V8, offering ~145BHP and a top speed of 120MPH. The Stag is a great-looking and great-sounding British sports car with a huge following.

This example has been subject to two major restorations over its life, the last rebuild in 2014 was carried out by specialists with no expense spared restoring it to its roots with a glamorous new lick of MGA Iris Blue. It's coming to market from ~4 years ownership, and with it being a restoration carried out a few years ago, you'll be able to get a good feel for how this car will stand the test of time, take a good look at this if you're in the market for a summer Stag.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Jean the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This delightful Iris Blue Stag is quite hard to part with after a lot of happy memories have been had in it.

Jean purchased the car in 2018, after she was in the market for a classic to take to shows and meets on the weekend. She had the hood frame reconditioned along with a new mohair cover fitted. An upgraded radiator to a four-core, aluminium overflow water tank and complete system filled with Evans cool liquid. The gearbox was also reconditioned in 2020.

Jean reports there is ~4 previous owners with this Triumph Stag, the third owner used the car has a daily until the late '80s, it was then garaged until 1993 when he began the first restoration which took 6 years of work, this was not a light job, various panels were replaced, the engine was stripped back, re-bored and lined, heads professionally rebuilt using hardened exhaust valves, balance connecting rods, new pistons, crankshaft, new shells, suspension, steering, fuel tank, lights, seats, poly bushed rear suspension and resprayed in "Signal Red".

In 2014 the car was then passed onto his son, the previous owner to Jean. He gave the vehicle to AM Restorations of Plymouth to carry out an extensive restoration at the cost of £27,000. The restoration included another engine overhaul, electronic ignition, electric fan, stainless steel exhaust, and a complete respray in his favourite colour, MGA "Iris Blue". The underbody of the car was also treated with Raptor paint and colour coordinated to the "Iris Blue".

Take a look at the history and media pack to see the large folder of invoice and history which comes with the car, along with a complete DVD showing footage and photos of the restoration by AM Restorations, Jean will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

One great-looking sporting classic that has become more desirable as it's aged - the chromework and bright Iris Blue paint make this example a stunner.

Wheels and Tyres

The Triumph is fitted with the factory standard 14" Kent wheels. They appear in great shape on this example, no curb damage spotted, and likely refurbished as part of the work in 2014.

The wheels are wrapped in Firestone Multihawk 2 tyres which all look to be in great condition with a good amount of tread, dated 2016/7. Please take a look at the photos for a detailed view.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in great condition across every panel. The shut lines are good across the car and the doors, boot, and bonnet, all look very straight and true for a sports car from the 70s.

When the car was restored in 2015, it was stripped back and and necessary panels replaced, metal fabrication completed or filler used where appropriate. As it stands today 8 years on, the only area of corrosion we spotted was a small area to the bottom corner of the off-side door, and some very small signs under the paint where the top of the rear wings meet the back panel. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Having benefitted from a respray in 2014 in "Iris Blue", as you would expect the paint finish is excellent. The colour, coverage and finish is even across all the panels.

The car has been polished to a deep lustre by Jean, again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves. Over time, there are a few marks to the paint, just a bit of wear over 8 years of use like on the leading edges of the doors, but in general this is a lovely example as pictured.

Glass and Trim

The glass and mirrors appear clear and unmarked with no issues to note. The brightwork was attended to during the 2017 work, we did notice some very slight bubbling to the rear nearside chrome bumper and slight area of cracking to the rubber stopper on the offside front bumper.

Interior

Classy good looks and room for two adult-size passengers in the rear, a very practical sporting classic.

Seats and Carpets

The black seats are in great condition and give the car a luxurious interior, we believe these would have been attended to during the restoration in 2014.

The same can be said for the carpets and door cards, take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

Dashboard

The black dash looks tightly bound whilst all gauges and dials are clearly legible. They look to be original items, and long with the wood veneer, and so do have some patina, not detracting from the quality of this car though.

View the extensive interior content for a detailed view of the dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The 'STAG' steering wheel is fitted and again looked to be the original item.

The gear stick too looks in great condition with overdrive fitted to help keep up with modern traffic and driving.

Mechanics

The gorgeous rebuilt 3.0L V8 soundtrack makes the car a delight to drive anywhere, some sensible upgrades for reliability have been actioned on this Stag.

Engine and Gearbox

Boasting the Triumph V8 3.0L power-plant, this engine gives you all the power you'd need in a classic sporting convertible.

Watch the video review to see the engine spring in to life with no untoward noises or smoke observed. The engine was rebuilt just before Jean purchased, and he has kept on top of maintenance since, she's also had the gearbox rebuilt to ensure the smooth running of the drivetrain. During the 2014 restoration work, a replacement overdrive unit was fitted, and in the current ownership Jean has had the cooling system for the engine upgraded so it doesn't suffer the typical Stag issues.

Suspension and Brakes

As part of the 2014 work, the suspension and braking systems were overhauled, as detailed in the invoices. Jean mentions that the suspension feels great too, no unusual knocks or noises present.

Please view the mechanical photos and video to see underneath the car.

The Drive

This 70s classic is still practical today, restored and rebuilt mechanics should allow you to comfortably keep up with and overtake modern traffic, with all the power of the 3.0L V8 under the hood.

Electrics and Other

Jean reports all the electrical features are working within the car to her knowledge. It was fitted with an upgraded but classic looking stereo as part of the work in 2014. The car also was upgraded to electronic ignition at that point too, along with some work to improve the reliability and effectiveness of the lighting as detailed in the invoices.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from 4 years ownership, this car was restored in 2014 at a cost of ~£27,000, and so now makes for a potentially cost effective entry into Stag ownership.

This Mk2 Stag has been lavished with restoration and improvement work by AM Restorations in 2014. A thorough overhaul of the drivetrain was actioned by the previous owner, and Jean has improved the car further in her ownership. The cost of the 2014 restoration came to a total of £27,500 with more money spent since.

Jean will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.
