Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The TR6 is the embodiment of the British sports car and this CR example is the one to have.

The last of the separate chassis Triumph TR sports cars, the TR6 on paper is an updated TR5 with a chiselled Karmann styled body but the TR6 is distinctive enough to have created its own following. Referred to as not only one of the last true Triumph sports cars, but also the last of the traditional British sports cars by a mainstream manufacturer. It follows a theme of brutally powerful open-top sports cars, thanks to the fuel-injected 2.5-litre six-cylinder from the plush 2500 Saloon.

An unashamedly masculine machine, its no-compromise driving style and proven underpinnings made its first appearance in 1969. Its traditional separate chassis, independent suspension and tuneful 124bhp engine make the TR6 the ultimate British sports car experience. The positive road-handling and back to basics motoring ethic have the primal but hugely appealing attraction and as a weekend car, it doesn’t get much better. Devoid of driver-aid controls and all of the trappings seen on modern sports cars, the driver is in complete control.

This later 1974 car has seen extensive restoration work over its lifetime, with running gear and interior work being the most recently renewed areas. As the CR version, it signifies that it has overdrive on the 3rd and 4th gear and now has the original Lucas fuel pump replaced with a common upgrade improvement by Bosch. This is a UK car and comes with a stack of paperwork and the promise of a cherished past.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Michael the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's spent far too much time sat hibernating in my garage, it needs to be driven and enjoyed.

Michael has owned the car for 5 years and was first attracted to the open-top motoring charms and melodic engine of the TR6. Covering an average of 300 miles a year since he's owned it, the car is now being sold as it simply isn't getting the use it deserves.

Exterior

Benefit from an older professional restoration in the past, this TR6 still looks stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

The Vredestein Sprint tyres are in good condition, with above legal thread. The wire wheels would benefit some elbow grease to bring back to life, just with a light surface pitting but are straight and the spokes appear to be straight too.

Bodywork

Overall the body is in good condition, with a few signs of age evident.

The panel gaps are typical of the British sports car of the era but the sills, A and B pillars look really good. There are a number of light dings, most noticeably on the doors and one on the near-side front wing.

The lower half of the car is good, particularly the arches with some evidence of corrosion on the rear valance, under the right light. The chassis rails are good, with no significant signs of rust or distortion.

Please take a good look at all the images and videos to assess the condition for yourself.

Paint

The paint coverage is also very good, with a deep lustre particularly on the flat visible surfaces. There is just some slight flatness in some smaller areas, possibly due to touch-ups.

Of course the car has a few age related marks, but remember this is an older restoration, so if there were significant issues then it would possibly be evident by now.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, with no significant marks, chips, cracks or scratches. T

he chrome work, particularly the bumpers and chrome around the headlamp show signs of pitting that can usually be improved with some metal polish.

The tonneaux cover and hard top appears to be in good condition and all of the glass and door rubber is in good condition too.

Interior

The nicely presented interior is enhanced by the near new seats - a really great place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The recently restored front seats are in great condition, with no evidence of major wear or damage. The carpets and mats show signs of age-related damage, particularly on the footwell areas near the tunnel but are overall are in presentable condition.

Time spent doing a good deep clean would improve the presentation.

Dashboard

The overall presentation of the dashboard is very good, the top of the dashboard shows no signs of sun damage or cracks. The walnut veneer finish on the dashboard is in nicely looked after condition. The dials, switches and controls are in line with a car of this age but have worn the years well.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The aftermarket Moto-Lita wooden steering wheel is a little worn, but not in a way that constitutes anything out of character for the car. The gear knob and surrounding area are free from damage, with the usual signs of wear and tear.

Mechanics

The 2.5-litre engine soundtrack is an expression of pure joy.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine runs well, suggesting a tight regime of maintenance. We heard no knocking and scraping noises from the nicely presented block. The engine has been subject to a lot of work, including a Bosch fuel pump and recent alternator The under-bonnet area is good with no major signs of poor repair or corrosion. Michael says the gearbox is said to operate with no issues, with no whining - it was subject to an overhaul in the recent past.

Suspension and Brakes

The overall physical condition of the running gear is reflected by the solid underside and chassis, the brake discs have limited wear and the suspension components are in decent working order, with recently fitted bushes and shocks.

The Drive

The compact dimensions, the simple but effective chassis and the straight-six engine provide the open-top motorist with the purest of driving experiences. Nimble and concise, it is something of a no-compromise car, but its charm lays in its unsanitised approach to motoring.

The car has seen an extensive running gear overhaul, which means that the all-important suspension components and brakes have been maintained to retain the handling abilities. The glorious soundtrack, along with the credibility of driving a genuine sports cars is hugely addictive.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrical items are said to be fully functional, with many components having been subject to recent renovations.

History and Paperwork

Paperwork equates to care, attention and love - this TR6 is no exception.

With a car that has evidence of an MOT certificate from 1979, you'd be delighted to see that it comes with a big file of paperwork. Despite its recent lack of use, the car has seen constant fettling and maintenance over the years, with thousands of pounds spent just in the last 10 years. Prior to that, it was subject to a fair amount of mechanical attention that includes an engine rebuild, steering, suspension and brakes, shock components replaced, along with chassis welding and Waxoyl coating.

So forget LHD imports with little history. Classic cars are all about history and provenance and this little car has it all. A genuine car that with just a bit of Sunday afternoon time spent on it will make a big difference.

Hi. Assume there’s no soft top or hard top with this car?

Also, on the MOT history it’s states that the outer seat belt anchorage points are corroded. Was this ever repaired and fo dmyou have pictures of these areas ?
