A beautiful Carmine Red example, we were very impressed with the bodywork on this one.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer sold between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company, styled by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. From 1970 - 1977, around 25,000 had been made, all with a smooth but lively 3.0L V8 engine with that typical Triumph exhaust.

A strong and refined grand tourer that’s simple and cost-effective to maintain, we love the sound of the engine. This example has been cared for by the owner Nick and features a 3-speed automatic gearbox, perfect for the summer cruise. We believe the car has been restored in the past based on email correspondence between Nick and Tudor classics have had. An interior upgrade was added during that time to a beautiful cream leather with red piping.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Nick, the owner, having photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Every time I open the garage, I wonder if I'm making the right decision selling.

Nick has owned this Stag for 14 years, but unfortunately during that time was unable to use it as it should have been used with time being the main restraint on use. He has three boys, which was a factor in choosing the Stag in the first place - they absolutely loved the classic drive. The rear seat comfortably seated the three of them, when going off to their cricket games etc.

Other car options didn’t really give that space when a convertible was the order of the day. Although time turned out to be an issue, in the back of his mind, he always thought to look after the Stag for the time when time was available. "Let me tell you, that hasn’t happened yet! Time to let her go to a good home, hopefully, someone who has the time to enjoy her."

Giovanni Michelotti was promised a shot at Triumph's next model, and he delivered.

Wheels and Tyres

Chrome wire wheels all looking in very good condition. They really set the look of the car off, and the chrome looks great with the other trim on the car.

A full set of Firestone F-630 Tyres are all in excellent shape.

Across the whole car, the panels are very good, shut lines looking straight with no dents across the car. For a car of the age, we normally expect to see corrosion around panel joins etc, but not on this one.

The soft-top hood is in excellent condition and functions well over the anti-roll bar. The colour matched hard-top is in a fair condition too, however, if desired to be used, we would recommend refurbishing it to fall in line with the condition of the rest of the stag - it fits in place and functions as expected. This is because Nicks always opted to use the car with the roof down on sunny days only.

The Carmine Red paint looks sublime, the finish in terms of colour and quality looks even across the car as pictured.

Grey Triumph detailing adds the signature touch to the infamous British sports convertible.

Glass and Trim

Having been stored safely out of bad weather at all times in Nick's ownership, all seals and chrome work are in very good order.

There is some very minor pitting on some areas, but you have to really look closely to try and spot it. The car must have had new trim fitted when you look at the mirror like finish on the bumpers etc.

Coming with a luxurious upgraded leather interior with veneer dashboard.

Seats and Carpets

Leather seats added by Tudor Classics during restoration gives the car more luxury are looking in good condition, some minor cracking in line with the age of the car.

The same can be said for the carpets as the cream colour has darkened a little over time, a thorough detailing of the interior will take it up a level in terms of quality we feel.

The leather dash looks tightly bound whilst all gauges and dials are clearly legible - the speedometer has lost some black paint on the rim over time. There are some minor marks here and there on the edges of the veneer wood, but generally it looks good, please see the photos.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wooden 3-spoke steering wheel is installed on the car reverting away from the original factory wheel. Nick mentions he has the original and has kindly taken a photo of it for us, and it will be sold with the car.

With GT characteristics, the Triumph Stag was never really succeeded in it's true 2+2 form.

Engine and Gearbox

A 3.0L V8 engine sits in the engine bay and wow, it sounds smooth in the video Nick took for us. He has just recently had the ignition repaired which looked reliable, and the car soon settled into that smooth tick over you would expect from a well cared for example.

The Stag was most commonly utilised with a 3-speed automatic transmission, which this car has. Nick assures us driving the car provides responsiveness from the gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The underside of the car is looking in good condition having been stored correctly and used sparingly. There is the usual sort of surface rust in places on the suspension arms etc, lots of visibility underneath rather than being covered in waxoil.

MacPherson struts in front, semi-trailing arms at the rear. Braking is by front disc and rear drum brakes, while steering is a power-assisted rack and pinion. The brakes were serviced in March 2016 and work well today.

The Drive

Easy driving is the way of this car, the automatic gearbox allowing a smooth cruise.

Nick has mentioned that the starter motor arm stops in an awkward position and doesn't contact when ignited. He states the second time of trying works without any trouble and has been assured by specialists that this is not a severe issue and the best thing to do is leave it and not try to repair it further.

Electrics and Other

Most of the electrics are functioning well on the car - we are told by Nick the electric window switch on the passenger door is faulty and the clock on the dash has moved position slightly in the glass.

History and Paperwork

Covering very minimal mileage over 14 years, but always taken care of and used just for sunny trips out.

After 14 years of ownership, Nick will be sad to see the car go. He has MOT certificates and invoices from his ownership and some from before then too. Also included in the sale is the original steering wheel and the car hard-top.

Nick recently had the car serviced and had new spark plugs installed.

Checks carried out by us:
