Introduction

Richard Gormley
Professional Consigner and Automotive Photographer

Simply a beautiful car - this Stag has benefitted from a comprehensive rebuild over the past 18 months and looks simply stunning as a result.

Styled by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti and by Launched to critical acclaim in 1970, the Stag brought a new degree of luxury to the Triumph sports car range. Elegant looks, smooth power delivery from Triumph's own 3 litre V8 and an opulent interior resulted in enthusiasm from the motoring press.

This Stag is a very special car having been subject to a substantial rebuild. No expense has been spared with professional work being carried out by Robsport International and Hotrod Technologies in Hounslow.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Richard after meeting Omer the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I love the sound of the V8, the drive and the colour of this car - I love a project though and intend to rebuild another Stag myself.

There is no question Omer is a perfectionist. Having acquired this car in the spring of 2020 he set about bringing it back to as close to perfection as he could. The outcome is remarkable, and the car would not be out of place in a '70s showroom.

Omer is on hand in the comments below to answer any questions you may have.

Exterior

Exceptional - flawless Tahiti Blue paintwork, twin coachlines and gleaming chrome enhance the cars elegant and purposeful looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels were diamond cut and powder coated as part of the rebuild and look stunning.

The car is shod with Maxxis Mecrota tyres all round which appear to have plenty of tread left and we saw no signs of cracking or age-related wear.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks excellent with no visible signs of corrosion. Omer confirms everything got the attention it needed as part of the rebuild and that the car has had a range of new panels including inner wings, front and rear floor pans, front section and door skins.

The shut lines are good across the car and the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close as they should with the rubbers having been replaced recently. The car has been fully undersealed as can be seen from the video and we would recommend taking a good look at the exterior photos to fully appreciate the quality of the work that has been carried out.

A fully restored hardtop with new headlining is also included with the car and has rarely been used.

Paint

Having benefitted from a bare metal respray as part of the rebuild we expected the paint finish to be good. We were not disappointed! The paint is nothing short of excellent right across the car with no noticeable differences in shade or texture. We could identify no chips or areas of minor damage.

The iconic Tahiti Blue has been polished to a deep lustre. The evenness and consistency of the finish is clearly evident in the photographs and video.

Glass and Trim

The glass and mirrors appear clear and unmarked with no issues to note. The brightwork has all been renewed or re-chromed as part of the rebuild and looks impeccable, contrasting beautifully with the paintwork.

Interior

Iconic – Triumph excelled when they created this space, a haven of '70s sporting luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The tan seats are in great condition with no visible tears or signs of wear. They provide good support and are firm and comfortable. The front seats we're recovered and had the foams replaced as part of the restoration.

New carpets have been installed and show very little wear. Matching floor mats are included, and Door cards have been replaced. In short the interior looks excellent and maintains the high quality of the rest of the car.

Dashboard

A Triumph hallmark, the wooden dash is in great condition with no peeling or significant marks. The dial glasses are clear and the dials in excellent condition as can be seen from the interior photographs.

The car is fitted with a “retro” bluetooth radio and in car communications system. A useful upgrade for a car that can more than hold its own in modern traffic.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is original and appears in good condition.

The automatic gear shifter is also in good condition as is the selector display.

Mechanics

The Triumph V8 is framed in a beautifully restored engine bay.

Engine and Gearbox

As well as looking great it is clear much work has been carried out to make sure this Stag drives well too. A desirable Weber carburettor has been fitted as well as a header tank, new alternator, Lumenition electronic ignition, electric fan and oil cooler. The radiator is a four-row upgrade installed by the previous owner. A complete new stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted which looks and sounds fantastic.

Suspension and Brakes

As part of the rebuild new front discs were installed along with callipers and pads. The rear was given similar treatment with the fitting of new drums, brake shoes and cylinders. The brakes have also received a new servo and master cylinder.

The car has benefitted from a new differential and the suspension has been restored with new rubbers and shocks.

The Drive

Omer tells us the car drives exceptionally well which is unsurprising given the level of work that has been carried out over the last eighteen months. Please see the mechanical review to witness the cold start and that characteristic V8 burble. Omer did point out a slight squeal on the recently fitted fan belt which he will be rectifying.

Electrics and Other

Omer confirmed all electrics work as they should and switches and wiring all appear in very good condition. As mentioned the car has an upgraded bluetooth communications system.

History and Paperwork

Cars of this quality are rare – this is a chance to own and enjoy a '70s sports car with all the hard work done .

Omer has a range of receipts, old MOTs, and tax discs - although there are some gaps in the car’s history.

There is a folder of old receipts as well as itemised bills for all the recent works.

Omer assures us this is a matching numbers car.

The car was first registered on 1st August 1977 and is now reading 99,202 on the clock.

We've done all our usual checks on the seller, V5 and it's HPi clear.

Hi what sort of price are you trying to achieve for the Stag, are you running till auction end or do you have a price approximately?

Hi Mel,
The car needs nothing doing too it at all, the listing is spot on with the description. The full bodyworks, paint works and interior and wheels alone cost £26k
This is the very best Stag out there.

Hi Chris,

I had a new alternator fitting which is what that squeaking is, there was a little oil leak from the oil filler housing, which has been sorted.
Honestly you won’t find a better Stag out there. I have 217 pics of the full bodywork and spray works.

Hi Omer,
Your Stag looks in great condition. Could you let me know if the Stag leaks oil when left standing? There are some strange high pitched sounds coming from the engine bay when the engine is running. Could you explain exactly where these sounds are coming and whether you can resolve the high pitched whistle.
Regards
Chris
