Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

A hand-built V8 sports car with genuine character and a nod towards usability.

The Chimaera was one of a new generation of TVRs to help lift the pitfalls and uncertainty of TVR ownership, retaining the quirks and driver appeal. The 1992 Chimaera was noted for its improved build standards, reliability and even offered a level of practicality and usability! Sharing the same chassis as the Griffith, the engines were also shared, but it was more spacious and fitted with a softer suspension, which offered further refinement with a comfortable ride. News soon caught on, and the Chimaera became the company's best selling car. While it was the closest to the every-man TVR, it was still very much categorised as a high-performance roadster and, when new, provided buyers with a car that offered plenty of thrills for half the price of a Porsche 911.

Coming from ~6 months with our vendor, this "Masala Red Metallic" 1994 car is fitted with a full grey leather interior, high-compression 4.0 V8 engine and has a recorded mileage of just ~30,580 miles. It comes with 11 instances of servicing and has been recommissioned after a period of dry storage. It comes with its owner's booklet, a file of invoices, two keys and an MOT to April 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Jason the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm not much of a driver really, I get my kicks out of restoration and renovation.

Jason's work involves working on and driving high-performance cars, so he is no stranger to power. A genuine petrol head with an eye for classics too, he enjoys restoring cars in his spare time.

He obtained the TVR earlier this year, after the owner's wife informed him of a sports car stored in their garage that had been unused since 2013. Once discovering it was a TVR, he relished the opportunity to recommission a solid, low-mileage car with good history, but has not really had much of a chance to use it, due to work commitments and other projects. Jason will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in a distinctive colourway, the visual presentation is positive.

Wheels and Tyres

The front five spoke alloys are 15“ rims and the rears are 16”. All are in good shape with minor signs of age but are free of significant curb damage. The front and rear of the car are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza S-03 tyres, with the front showing a spec of 205/60 and 225/50 to the rear - these are date-coded from around 2000. They show legal tread and display well given their age.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the TVR and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The exterior presents positively, with no outstanding flaws aside from a small mark on the lower front valance near the grille. It has been touched up with paint. The fibreglass shell is evenly mounted and has decent door shut lines; all doors open and close with no obstruction. The engine bay and wheel wells are in solid, and the floor pan looks clean. The chassis and suspension mounts are in good shape and are coated with inhibitor. The outriggers and their body mounts appear to be sound.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The "Masala Red Metallic" paint suits the contours of the body well. The finish is consistent throughout and has a decent lustre. There are a handful of cosmetic blemishes on the bonnet, boot, front valance and offside. Some of which have been touched up with paint. The bonnet has a handful of scratches and a light blemish on the vent.

We also noted that the nearside headlamp cowling paint finish doesn’t match the body, and the gel coat has minor fractures near the offside headlamp, front offside corner of the front air dam and around the nearside rear lamp. That said, the car is in good overall shape considering its age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass, headlamps and lenses are all in good condition with decent seals. The body trim is complete and well-mounted. The car also comes with its original intake grille and trim.

image

Interior

Well-kept and tastefully finished in grey leather, the interior also conveys style with flair.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats present well; they have age-related creases, and the driver's seat has wear, but overall, they look acceptable.

The carpets are in good shape, appearing to be free from ultraviolet fade. They are loose around the driver's door wells, but all are free of damp. The grey boot carpeting appears to be a little baggy in places, but the storage shows light use.

image

Dashboard

The leather dashboard, facia and centre console are in excellent shape, with just the occasional minor mark noted on the padding. The switches and controls are smartly presented. All are said to work, although Jason has temporarily disconnected the clock to avoid any potential battery drain.

The door cards are in good shape, and the rear trim is also in excellent condition.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good shape with some age-related wear on the padded rim.

The gear knob also shows signs of age but is perfectly acceptable.

image

Mechanics

The power, traction, soundtrack, and driver involvement are very much the charm of the TVR.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up immediately with no unwanted noises or actions. The dashboard warning lights remained off, as the engine idled. There were no unwanted exhaust fumes, and we didn’t spot any fluids on the ground during our visit. The high-compression 4.0 Range Rover V8 engine is cleanly presented with decent hoses and ancillaries. A new battery has been recently installed.

It is fitted with the Borg Warner T5 gearbox and operates with no reported problems; the changes are slick and free of grinds or crunches. Jason is satisfied with the clutch's operation and informed us of a positive biting point.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension absorbs the road well with no unwanted thuds or upsets. The ride is typically firm at the low speeds, yet remarkably free of mechanical vibrations. At speed, the TVR felt taut around corners, with no creaks from the wheels.

Its braking is effective and stops the car with no drama. We didn’t hear any squeals from the wheels on the day.

image

The Drive

Pure in almost every sense, the lack of driver aids and a torquey V8 engine is music to every Supercar enthusiast, yet it's not unmanageable to drive. The high-compression ~275BHP V8 may get you to 60 in well under 5 seconds, yet it proves to be smooth and manageable around town. Once the car reached temperature, the engine remained smooth and idled evenly without excessive ‘hunting’. The engine was switched off once it was warm and restarted straight away without issue.

We didn’t hear any significant diff-whine, or any other unwanted vibrations. The non-assisted steering is direct and free of unwanted noises. The car has a good history of regular oil changes.

image

Electrics and Other

The hood is in excellent condition both inside and out. The carbon fibre roof panels are easily removed and store snugly in the boot. The canopy raises and lowers with no problems.

Jason has invested time and effort into the immobiliser, and he has also fashioned a built-in cut-off switch.

History and Paperwork

A low mileage example which has recently been recommissioned, the car had an excellent service schedule before being stored for ~10 years.

The TVR was first registered by the TVR Centre in Hertfordshire in April 1994. It had a succession of short-term owners until it was obtained by a keeper in Solihull in 2010, who kept the car until 2025. The car appears to have been MOT'd until 2013 and was then retained in the owner's garage until it was sold to Jason early in 2025.

The car has its service book, which shows 10 stamps. There is an additional invoice for servicing, which was carried out but wasn’t stamped. The most recent service is from 2009, which appears to have been done around 3,000 miles ago. Jason has also recently changed the oil.

The car comes with a file of invoices that go back to 2003, which tally up to almost ~£5,000. The most recent invoices are for a new battery, a window, and a replacement uprated Cobra alarm. Historic invoices cover a Lambda sensor in 2004, a reconditioned radiator, front discs and pads in 2007 (recorded mileage of 27,459), exhaust parts and interior electrics in 2010 and a new alternator in 2011.

It comes with a few tax discs and previous MOT certificates, two keys and has an MOT to April 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Jason this is my old car. I bought it from Sheffield approx 2002. I lived in solihull at the time. Good to see it’s still on the road. I had some good times with it. I’m still a TVR owner
