It's a British two-seater fitted with the fantastic 4.0 litre V8 - the perfect combination for a sports car.

TVR is notorious for breaking the mould and doing things a little differently. The Blackpool-born company started around 1947 and has produced some of the most iconic lightweight sports cars the UK has ever seen. The Chimaera hits the sweet spot between a highly focused performance car and a useable weekend toy. Under the lightweight fibreglass bonnet, you'll find the Rover V8 with its simple and strong mechanics. And underneath the body, the Chimaera was based on the same tubular chassis as the Griffith but with a slight focus on comfort and more luggage space. It quickly became TVR's best-selling model, surpassing the Griffith and appraised for its handling balance.

This Chimaera is a real driver’s car. With just ~66,446 miles on the clock, you wouldn’t say the TVR has been driven excessively over the years, but you would say that when it has been used, it’s been fun because that’s just what the TVR Chimaera does. It comes to market from ~1 year ownership, and is a solid car that has had money spent on it in previous ownership on the interior and hood etc, making it a nice example.

Meet the owner

After trying a couple of other more classic British sports cars, I never really felt comfortable, but I then tried the TVR which I loved.

Ross has owned the TVR for just over a year. He wanted to own a British sports car he could jump into and enjoy on the weekends and maintain with ease, and the Chimaera fitted the bill perfectly. Although he got along well with the TVR, lifestyle change and a new business venture is the reason for the sale.

He spotted this car for sale in Scotland; flew up, test drove it, and purchased and drove it back to the Midlands on the same day. It's a car that has had expenditure from previous long ownership, and so didn't require much from him. Please feel free to ask Ross any questions about this car in the comments below.

Exterior

With a fibreglass body, the TVR not only looks fantastic - but is also very lightweight making it even more entertaining with the 4.0L V8.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original five-spoke alloy wheels, these are in great condition for the age, with just a small kerb mark on the front nearside wheel.

The tyres are Toyo Proxes on the rear which have a good few miles remaining. The fronts are slightly older, Cooper Zeon 2XS, which have a good amount of tread. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The body on the TVR is generally in good condition, and being fibre glass, doesn't suffer from corrosion. The underside of the TVR is usually an area that raises some concern. However, this particular car looks to be in good order. There is a small amount of flaking protective paint to the outriggers and chassis in a few places, but this could easily be treated and painted to prevent it from developing into a problem, and we've taken some extensive images and videos in the "Mechanics" gallery to show you this and help give a proper assessment.

In terms of shut lines and panel gaps, we did notice the passenger side door has dropped slightly towards the back, but this may be able to be adjusted. The other door, bonnet and boot lid align nice and straight with an even panel gap. The roof has been replaced by a previous keeper and is therefore in excellent condition, including the plastic rear window, which is free from any discolouration or damage.

Paint

Finished in "Midnight Blue Metallic", in terms of colour match across the body the car looks really good. There are some stone chips to the front end, which are in keeping with the car's age and would suggest it’s an honest car that hasn't been repainted. There are some other age-related chips as we walk around the TVR, a small amount of paintwork looks to have been carried out to the lower nearside corner of the rear bumper, and now the lacquer looks like it would benefit from being polished etc.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look in good condition, with no apparent scratches on the side or rear windows. The seal around the windscreen seems in good order.

The headlights are in excellent condition with no chips or cracks in the plastic lenses, and the same can be said for the rear lights.

Interior

The cream and blue leather interior is in excellent condition, thanks to a previous keeper having it reupholstered.

Seats and Carpets

A previous keeper has retrimmed the seats in cream with blue stitching and an embroidered TVR logo on the headrests. These are in excellent condition with no real signs of wear. The door cards are also finished the same and have no scuffs or damage.

The carpets also look to have been replaced and are excellent throughout with minimal signs of wear. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Finished in blue and cream leather to match the seats with a walnut fascia, the dashboard is excellent with no damage. The instruments have satin aluminium bezels and are all in excellent condition, working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~66,446 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Personel steering wheel is in place and is in good order, with just a small amount of shining to the leather rim. The aluminium gearknob is in good condition, with the numbers clearly legible.

Mechanics

With a V8 engine usually found in a Range Rover - TVR improved things even further to gain more performance.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine in the TVR fires up without hesitation and sounds fantastic with its wonderful V8 burble. Looking around the engine bay, there don’t appear to be any leaks or issues to raise concern. The car performs extremely well, pulling strongly through the rev range, as seen in the Mechanical Review video.

The five-speed gearbox has a precise gearchange and selects easily, and Ross reports the clutch to feel as you would expect.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good order, there were no knocks or bangs present on our test drive, and the car handles well when going along the road. As mentioned in the bodywork section, we've taken lots of pictures and some great video footage to show the outriggers/chassis, which are often a cause for concern on these cars, look in good condition.

With a lump of a V8 fitted, you need good brakes to stop you when required. These perform as they should, bringing the TVR to a halt in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

The Drive

Out on the road, the TVR is tremendous fun. It turns heads, often before you can even see it, thanks to the wonderful V8 soundtrack. When you do see it, it is a pleasing sight because the TVR Chimaera is a great sleek-looking sports car.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the TVR is reported to be working as it should. There is a Sony CD headunit fitted, which also has Bluetooth. The switches all appear in good condition, with no real signs of excessive wear. The passenger-side sunvisor drops as you go along the road, but this would be an easy item to replace.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market having covered a modest ~66,400 miles, it has had the interior renovated in past ownership and is a solid and honest example.

The last service carried out on the TVR was in 2021, ~64,843 miles, approximately ~1,600 miles ago. As you can see from the MOT history, the Chimaera hasn’t been used much in recent years, and the mileage would suggest it was a weekend summer toy, as they often are. There are some invoices for service work, plugs and brake pads, all fitted within the last ~3,500 miles. In addition, some previous MOT certificates are included, and the current MOT is due to expire on 15.07.2023.

Hi yes most people had for years most of the owners in its early years had for a few years and then sold it ,but 10 owners in 28yrs is fair I’m only sell due to a change direction in my life I still got the stag so alls not lost
