Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Mid-engined, ~870 kg, and ~150 bhp: a perfect recipe for some serious fun!

The VX220 was developed alongside the Elise S2 but with many different parts. It had one goal: to be a serious driver's car. It was longer, wider, more flexible, and more forgiving than an Elise, but every bit as much fun. The car weighed in at just ~870 kg. Automotive reviewers raved about its impressive handling, brakes and precise steering.

Vauxhall fitted the 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces approximately 150 bhp…plenty of power in the lightweight chassis, which is the reason they are such a fantastic choice for enthusiasts who want a desirable, quick, two-seater sports car.

It’s safe to say the VX220 can be described as an iconic car. This one comes to market from six and a half years with our vendor, and has covered just over 57,000 miles.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Gareth the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“I purchased the VX220 in 2019, hoping it would be a reliable investment and something I could have fun in.”

Garath bought the VX220 because he wanted something fun to enjoy driving at the weekend and, hopefully, retain some of its value over time.

His plan didn’t go quite as expected due to a busy work schedule and other commitments that came along. During his six and a half years of ownership, he has only managed to clock up around 300 miles! Half of those involved bringing it back from its purchase.

Gareth would be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

CONTACT OWNER

Exterior

With more angular and sharp lines than an Elise, the VX220 looks more aggressive on the road.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original five-spoke alloy wheels, which are all in excellent condition with really no signs of corrosion or damage.

The tyres are a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza, which all have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Looking around the body of the VX220, the panels align well with equal gaps. There are some chips to the body, which have chipped the body’s finish, not just the paint layer.

The fabric roof is in good condition, with no damage spotted.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Star Silver Metallic', the paintwork generally presents well, with just some stone chips in keeping with its age and mileage.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows look to be in good condition, with no noticeable scratches or damage spotted.

The headlights and rear light units are all in good condition, with no damage to the lenses.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

A factory race-inspired interior - with plenty of lovely exposed aluminium - finishes off the VX220 nicely.

Seats and Carpets

The firm sports seats have some minor signs of age, and would benefit from a deep clean.

The VX220 carpet set is in good condition, with no real signs of excessive or heavy use.

Both door cards are in good condition. There is a very small amount of wear to the edge of the leather covering the sills, but this is very minor and is to be expected considering it’s a high-wear area.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, with no damage spotted. There is some oxidisation to the aluminium trim, but this could possibly be cleaned to restore it.

The Stack instrument cluster is working correctly, with no warning lights displayed, and the odometer showed ~57,145 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The small factory steering wheel is in good order, with just a light amount of shine to the rim, and the aluminium gear knob is in good condition.

image

Mechanics

A 2.2 litre engine in a machine weighing in at ~870 kg makes for a car that's more than the sum of its parts.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.2-litre engine fires up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported. A full service was carried out when the car went for its MOT in June 2026.

Fitted with a five-speed gearbox, which provides a smooth change with the gears easily selected.

Predictably, throughout the range the car pulls strongly.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the car, you quickly realise what makes the VX220 so appealing - the handling is excellent.

No knocks or bangs were heard coming from the car during our test drive, and Gareth reports the brakes to work correctly, bringing the car to a stop in a straight line.

image

The Drive

Driving the VX220 is all about lightweight, analogue driving enjoyment. The mid-engine, low seating position, and excellent chassis balance make the car feel incredibly agile and responsive through corners, while the direct steering gives you plenty of feedback.

This is an absolute pleasure to drive.

image

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear in the VX220 is said to be working correctly and in good condition, with no wear to the lettering.

An Alpine head unit is in place for the in-car entertainment - not that you really need it!

image

History and Paperwork

A well-stamped service book with invoices suggests the VX220 has been well cared for.

The history file for this iconic Vauxhall is impressive, with 19 stamps and plenty of invoices to back up the work and parts fitted. The owner's manual is present, along with three keys.

Hitting 60 mph in around 5.6 seconds, the VX220 is one of Vauxhall’s most interesting and focused sports cars. With so few remaining on the roads, it's certainly a worthy purchase for any petrolhead.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
