Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Known as the car for people who think - Volvos are known for their competent, comfortable, safe and reliable vehicles.

The Volvo 240 series is a range of mid-sized cars produced between 1974 till 1993, with more than 2.8 million units sold, it was quite the hit. The 240 series had a large and loyal following, it might not have been crowned the most stylish or luxurious motor but it made up for it with safety and sales. The 244 was the four-door saloon based on the 140. The 244 has a redesigned front-end, re-engineered for the MacPherson strut suspension and new nose. The interior was refitted and made even more impact-friendly, along with much larger and more absorbent bumpers all round. In 1981 the 240 received a facelift, given smaller bumpers, it began to catch the eye of the press too having just won the European Tour Car Championship.

This example has just just been inherited by the vendor, passed down from his late Great Grandfather. Family owned from new (just 1 former keep registered with the DVLA), this Volvo 244 DL has seen very little use over the past 12 years, an ideal base for complete restoration or potentially as a usable and practical daily classic.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Edward the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

With this being my late great grandads car, I've always had a soft spot and fond memories for the design of this saloon.

There is one previous owner on file for this 1982 Volvo 224 DL, Edwards Great Grandfather. Over the last 12 years, the car has not been used and only covered ~100 miles during that time. The car comes with a small amount of paperwork as is often the case when cars are passed on, take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold along with a short "On The Road" video.

Edward will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comment below.

Exterior

Iconic boxy looks from the 80s - the design of these Volvos has definitely matured positively now.

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped with 14" steel wheels, all four are showing signs of surface corrosion due to a lack of use and would benefit from a refurb.

The tyres are Start Ceat's, and are showing their age with some slight cracking to the side walls. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this classic example certainly appears in good condition, the gaps and shut lines looking inline for an '80s Volvo. We noticed a few dents around the car, in the nearside rear panel.

There are some areas of corrosion showing on this car around the bottom edges of the panels, the front off-side showing more than the nearside. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The 244 DL is in a lovely pale blue which really suits the shape and era of this Volvo. The finish of the paint appears in fair condition, even in colour, with some areas around the car which would benefit from some attention. Through the lack of use, some redness has started to show along the front where old stone chips have taken the paint away.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections to show the Volvo as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in good condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of excessive signs of wear or degradation.

Interior

Sitting in the drivers seat of this saloon, there's a certain industrious charm to the cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in a complimentary blue cloth, there's an 80s chic to this interior. The seats look really good with some usual wear to the drivers seat inline with the age and mileage.

The blue carpets and rubber mats also look in line with the age and mileage of the car. Please view the video to see the cabin in detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in original condition, and in overall good condition for its age, there are only very light marks on the top.

The odometer reported 80,018 miles on our visit. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Volvo steering wheel is fitted and finished in Black. The car also features its original automatic gearstick - the steering wheel is showing some slight signs of cracking around the outer rim.

Mechanics

A true workhorse, this boxy Volvo is powered by a reliable and robust 2.1L block.

Engine and Gearbox

The 244 DL is powered by an 2.1L offering the driver ~106BHP to tap into, often described as a tough reliable brick.

We captured a cold start video that shows the car starting without fuss the first time. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the engine bay and underneath the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The car was redesigned to house new MacPherson strut suspension design. Edward reports prompt stopping power. Please view the mechanical video and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

As the car doesn't have an MOT currently, we were only able to take the car on a short drive on a private farm road. We did a small brake test, and the car certainly seemed to pull well with no major knocks or squeaks audible on the short drive.

Electrics and Other

Edward reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge. Keep in mind though that this car hasn't been use much in the last 12 years.

History and Paperwork

These Volvos are starting to become a rare sight, we think this example is a great base for restoration/renovation, coming from the same family from new.

This DL 244 has seen very little use over the past 12 years, covering just under ~100 miles during that time. Edward inherited the car from his late Great Grandfather and planned on enjoying the car as a very usable and practical classic for years to come. Due to moving house, he no longer has the space or time to carry out the work required. The car will be MOT and tax except from next year, but currently it does not have an MOT.

Edward will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
