The 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Campervan Split Screen, often affectionately called the "Splitty," has a rich history that cements its place as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century.

Originally derived from the VW Type 2 Transporter, which debuted in 1950, the Split Screen was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for practical, multi-purpose vehicles. A simple yet ingenious design, with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and forward control layout, offered excellent interior space and flexibility.

By the early 1960s, the Split Screen had become a global phenomenon, embraced not only as a dependable workhorse for tradespeople and businesses but also as a lifestyle vehicle for families and adventurers.

This example comes from a ~6 and a half year ownership and has a restored engine fitted that was completed Harry Harpics VW specialists in 2021. The camper is finished with an American retro exhaust, is currently dry stored in a local garage and has been lowered with suspension works completed in its current ownership. The Type 2 would be excellent with a little attention to its bodywork but runs and drives beautifully, as well as still looking really smart out on the road.

The Type 2 also became a cultural symbol during the 1960s and ’70s, tied closely to the hippie movement, surf culture, and the ethos of freedom and exploration. Today, examples like these are prized for their nostalgic charm, historical significance, and enduring appeal as rolling pieces of history.

It's been part of the family for so long now, we've loved every journey and adventure out in it!

Lucy, the current owner, has always been a big fan of VW split-screens, she says, "I asked my parents for one every birthday and Christmas for as long as I can remember. Shockingly they never brought me one, I was about 5 when I first started asking! I always said that when I had the money I would buy one. I was fortunate enough to be able to live out my dream of getting one of my own".

Even though it's a classic, Lucy has enjoyed every trip out in it and has regularly used it through her ownership. Lucy says often people say they think it's only for show, she said, "I used to camp every summer in it, a favourite spot was the Norfolk coast. I loved the fact it was a head turner whether it be parked at a campsite or popping for some petrol".

With less time on her hands after the birth of her first child, time spent with the Type 2 hasn't been as plentiful as before, saying, "I haven't been able to use it anywhere near as much as I want. To have a classic locked away is such a shame when someone else could get the joy that I have out of it. So a reluctant sell as I would hope one day I can take my little boy camping and enjoy the slower pace of life in a splitty".

Exterior

With its iconic split-screen front and timeless curves, the 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Campervan is instantly recognisable - a symbol of freedom, adventure, and classic charm.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with a set of period 14" steel wheels, these are finished with chrome hubcaps and the steel painted white. All appeared to be in good condition but a polish would really enhance the wheels.

We did note a little sign of scuffing to the hubcaps, but nothing overly concerning.

The front of the VW is fitted with Roadstone Eurovis Sport tyres with date codes from 2020 and a spec of 185/60. To the rear, the van is fitted with a mix of Autogrip and Hilo tyres, although we were unable to accurately date code these.

Bodywork

The boot, and the engine bay open and close well. The doors open and close well too, although as the seals have been replaced, the front doors were a little tight, but only due to the new rubber sections.

The panel gaps are well-aligned, and we didn’t notice any visible dents on any of the panels.

We noted a few signs of corrosion around the gutter rail sections on the top edge of the Type 2, to the edge of the window seals, and some under paint areas on the lower section of the campervan.

Paint

The blue-over-white colourway is a beautiful combination for the "Splitty", perfectly capturing the early '60s style of the vehicle. The paint coverage is even across the car with no noticeable differences in colour.

There is some wear on the roof, underside of the wheel arches, and inside door edges with a slight marks and signs of corrosion on the outer lips, although these are subtle and required close inspection to notice.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the camper as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the van, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the camper appears to be in great condition. The seals all seem to be in excellent condition, having been replaced.

The headlights and indicators are free from chips, as are the rear lights.

The chrome work showed well throughout, adding to the charm of the VW.

Badges and emblems are present and correct.

The pop-top with its smart colour matched finish, was a lovely classic touch to the Type 2.

Seats and Carpets

The VW is equipped with blue and white vinyl seats, which are in great condition with minimal signs of wear. The rear seats are also in excellent shape, with no concerning issues noted.

The front of the Type 2 was fitted with black rubber matting, these showed in respectable condition. Checking underneath these did show a few signs of age to the floor pans.

It’s the rear interior section that really sets the camper off with its relaxing space. The furniture appears to be in lovely condition overall, with the cupboards offering plenty of storage space for weekends away and functioning smoothly, opening and closing as they should.

The Lino flooring to the rear space showed well and without concern.

Dashboard

The simplistic black driver’s dial looked great and was functioning as expected when we visited the car - the odometer read ~27,518 at the time of our visit.

The cream dash is in very good condition, just a few slight paint cracks. The dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in excellent shape, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The white steering wheel is a simple setup and looks to be in good condition. There are a couple of small cracks in the paint on the centre section and some wear to the outer edge, although nothing overly concerning.

The gear stick with a smart 'dice' topper is in great shape, with only mild signs of use.

Mechanics

Powering the VW is a simple yet reliable air-cooled flat-four engine, delivering enough punch for laid-back cruising.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine bay was clean, tidy and looked maintained. Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns, and the camper performed without issue when running and out on the local road. As mentioned, the engine has been reconditioned by Harry Harpics VW specialists, in 2021. Lucy told us she would add a new, larger air filter if she was keeping the van.

We noted a slight sign of seeping from the mechanical elements, although were unable to determine what the cause was here.

The 4-speed manual gearbox worked well, producing no unwanted noises and raising no concerns regarding its performance while driving. We took the vehicle out on the local storage area roads with Lucy, to get a better feel for what this campervan is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no unwanted knocks or bangs from the suspension when we were driving around the area where it's currently stored, and the ride felt comfortable.

Looking over the underside of the van during our visit, it did show its age with notes of corrosion observed, although nothing that stood out for us as a major concern.

The drum brakes felt to have no vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the camper to a stop with the kind of stopping power you'd expect from a vehicle of this era.

The Drive

The Campervan is a delightful space to enjoy, whether you’re cruising comfortably in its supportive seats or relaxing in the cosy living area.

It's more of a traditional journey out in the Type 2 due to the camper not having power steering, but given the comfortable cruising speed, this was a charming aspect of the VW.

With its iconic looks, it promises adventure at every turn - be it a weekend getaway, a cross-country journey, or a simple day out, the Volkswagen Camper is always the perfect companion.

Electrics and Other

The VW features minimal electrical components, keeping in theme with its heritage. The cabin features a Kenwood CD / stereo and a speaker set up in the cabin area.

A smart feature was the power inlet set in the engine bay, allowing the future owner to hook up to a power source with a 12v plug located in the rear space.

The van is currently fitted with a trickle charge battery where it has been in storage. The 'church' release key for the engine bay is neatly stored in the main cabin.

The rear of the Type 2 is equipped with a stove and sink with space for water supply and a gas bottle, everything the future owner would need for a weekend away. The table to the rear showed a little wear, but nothing really troubling.

During our time with the vehicle, we noticed no electrical faults, and lights and gauges working as expected. All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the camper, although Lucy told us everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

Reconditioned VW engine, upgraded suspension, amenity equipped and garage stored - this lovely Type 2 T1 Camper is ready for its next set of travels with its new owner.

It's clear to see, the Type 2 has been well loved by its current owner for the last ~6 and a half years, with responsible updates completed over the past few years. Service works were completed in 2023 with new spark plugs, the ignition timing was refitted, covers were updated with new gasket covers and a rotor arm was replaced costing over ~£170.

In 2021, the engine was rebuilt with a carburettor strip down, new clutch release bearing, updated silencer and spark plugs, air tube and heater hose fitment and a new engine bay gas strut. In the same year, a new camshaft was updated, main bearing set replaced and a new carburettor manifold was fitted. All of these works combined cost over ~£4,200.

Suspension works were also actioned in 2021, where AVO telescopic shock absorbers were fitted. Works here were over ~£400. Corrosion works were addressed in 2020, where the rear crossmember, rear outriggers, rear jacking points were cleaned and replacement sections welded back in, works here were over ~£700.
