Introduction
Dom Ginn
An icon of freedom and adventure, the VW Type 2 T1 Split Screen camper captures the spirit of the open road with its timeless design and undeniable charm.
The 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Campervan Split Screen, often affectionately called the "Splitty," has a rich history that cements its place as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century.
Originally derived from the VW Type 2 Transporter, which debuted in 1950, the Split Screen was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for practical, multi-purpose vehicles. A simple yet ingenious design, with a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and forward control layout, offered excellent interior space and flexibility.
By the early 1960s, the Split Screen had become a global phenomenon, embraced not only as a dependable workhorse for tradespeople and businesses but also as a lifestyle vehicle for families and adventurers.
This example comes from a ~6 and a half year ownership and has a restored engine fitted that was completed Harry Harpics VW specialists in 2021. The camper is finished with an American retro exhaust, is currently dry stored in a local garage and has been lowered with suspension works completed in its current ownership. The Type 2 would be excellent with a little attention to its bodywork but runs and drives beautifully, as well as still looking really smart out on the road.
The Type 2 also became a cultural symbol during the 1960s and ’70s, tied closely to the hippie movement, surf culture, and the ethos of freedom and exploration. Today, examples like these are prized for their nostalgic charm, historical significance, and enduring appeal as rolling pieces of history.
Take a look over this charming VW, all set for plenty of adventures.

I WANT ONEAsk Questions
Hello Lucy. Is there a reserve price for the van or a price you would accept now? I’m very interested in it but won’t be around at the end of the auction time. Thanks.
Hi, there is reserve on the van but I am unable to divulge what it is as it undermines the auction, but the highest bidder has the first refusal of a post auction deal if it doesn’t meet the reserve, so its worth putting your bid in. If you have ay further questions please ask or email [email protected]
Hi – can you confirm the number of passenger seats, and which have seatbelts? Thanks
Hi, Sorry for the delay i didn’t see this message come through. Two belts in the front next to the driver. Then one lap belt on forward facing rear bench seat.
Hi
I see the Bus was registered in 2008
Has it been imported
Thanks
Hi, yes the bus was imported from South Africa. This is why it is also a right hand drive. Cheers
Thankyou
It says in the description the underside and under the rubber flooring in the cab there are areas of corrosion
Do they require immediate attention
Thanks
Honestly I don’t have a mechanical background, so wouldn’t want to comment too much. However, all work has been under take by Harry Harpics who regularly completed work on the bus (see attached paperwork) and they never flagged it as an issue that need immediate attention. Please send an email to [email protected] if you have a viewing request to assess for yourself. Cheers
Thankyou for the info Lucy
