Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The Volkswagen T2 is a beloved, cult-status icon with practical usability.

The Volkswagen Type 2, along with its Beetle sibling, is one of the few vehicles that can be recognised by its appearance and sound alone. Summed up as a source of automotive pleasure and a cultural icon, the original split-screen van conjures up images as a pop icon for the counterculture movement. Yet, it was far more than that - serving communities, providing reliable transportation and easy to work on, the air-cooled VW Type 2 offered good traction in both hot and cold climates, which was only a fraction of the reason why it became such a cult vehicle.

Available in a variety of configurations, the Type 2 was the forerunner of the modern cargo and passenger vans. Evolving from the original 1950 design, it remained in production in South America until 2005. One of the best uses of the angular cabin space was the Microbus variant of the Type 2; its comfortable ride and decent engine torque made it appreciated as a mode of transportation in urban environments.

This rare 1966 original RHD 6-windowed Deluxe model was imported from Thailand in 2005. It has seen a level of restoration, and as a result, the structure and body look solid. It retains many of its original features, including its novel 6 pop-out windows and sliding door, and it has also been fitted with an upgraded air-cooled VW engine; currently registered as a 2-litre but we are unable to confirm its size. Finished in its original colour scheme of red and white, it's being sold as an exciting project opportunity. The engine runs well and the exterior is cleanly presented, but needs attention to the paint finish and, more importantly, the interior. Much of the cabin has been removed, which presents it as an ideal opportunity for a creative mind to bring this lovely little bus back to glory.

It is MOT and road-tax exempt and comes with a folder of invoices since 2005 and a current V5.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Danny the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The VW has potential as a promotional vehicle or could easily be restored to stock.

The Microbus was owned by several owners following its arrival in the UK in 2005. The lack of any interior trim presents itself as an ideal project to convert to a day van, camper, promotional vehicle or restored back into a bus.

Danny, the current owner, recently obtained the VW, having been impressed by its solid nature, strong engine and huge potential.

Danny will be happy to answer any questions about the bus in the comments section below.

Exterior

Solid with a complete exterior, the paint will need attention, but it still presents well.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with a set of 15” EMPI-style GT 5 alloys, they’re in good shape, with just surface corrosion noted on the chrome-finished rims.

Both the front and rear of the van are fitted with Sunny Transporter tyres with a spec of 195/70. They are date-coded from 2016 and appear to be in good shape with plenty of tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the VW and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The exterior presentation is positive, with no discernible damage, aside from a mild dent on the rear offside corner of the body, which appears to be treatable. The panels are straight with mild distortion in places. The door panel gaps show inconsistency, but all doors open and close without problems. The side sliding door is believed to be an original fitting. The nose panel and roof appear to be solid.

The underside of the VW looks solid, showing a decent floor pan, chassis rails, jacking points, suspension mounts and wheel wells. There is a light sheen of corrosion in places, but it appears to be treatable. The engine bay, cab foot wells, load bay floor and front bulkhead are also solid.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The VW is believed to have been finished in blue/white when imported and has seen a repaint in recent years.

The finish is consistent in colour, but almost every panel is afflicted with underpaint blisters, which are more noticeable on the darker hue. There is a chip by the sliding door, but otherwise, the van is free of road wear.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape with presentable trim and seals - Danny mentioned that some of the windows are stiff to open.

The front indicator lenses show their age, the headlamps and rear lenses are decent, with mild signs of age on the front bezels.

The chrome trim is presentable and well-mounted to the van and the bumpers are in good condition.

Interior

The interior is a bit of a blank canvas, so there's huge potential for creativity.

Seats and Carpets

The white and blue vinyl cabin seats are a little grubby, but appear to be free of rips or tears.

There are no carpets in the van, and everything behind the passenger seats will need to be sourced, including headlining, door cards and interior trim.

Dashboard

The dashboard is solid, retaining its speedometer and fuel gauge.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering is cleanly presented, and the gear lever is fitted with a non-original aftermarket dice handle.

Mechanics

The air-cooled engine runs smoothly and offers quite a bit more pull than the original.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up immediately and sounds strong, with no undulations or misfires. There was no exhaust smoke during the start-up. The engine idles evenly, and the warning light soon went off after the start.

The engine is clean and shows evidence of new components. It has been fitted with twin Dell'Orto carburettors, and the tin wear and hoses appear to be complete.

The aftermarket exhaust is in good shape.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension was not meaningfully tested, but they appear to be up to the job.

The brakes do bite; they’re weak but can stop the van at low speeds. The handbrake works.

There is an invoice to back up work on the brakes in 2016, but it would be sensible to get the whole system checked.

The Drive

Due to the lack of brakes, we didn’t take it out for a meaningful drive, but the clutch and gearbox operate without problems; it engages low gears and reverse without problems.

The VW rolls at low speed with no issues; no grinding or knocks were heard.

The steering is free of knocks and operates as it should.

Electrics and Other

A roof rack and mesh sunvisor are also part of the sale - they’re both in good shape.

History and Paperwork

Imported into the UK in 2005, it retains much of its unique specifications.

This RHD 6-windowed Deluxe microbus was originally exported to Thailand when new in 1966. It was imported into the UK in 2005 and subjected to a restoration. It retains its import paperwork, past MOTs and invoices, including a 2016 parts invoice of ~£2,600, and older invoices for engine maintenance and servicing. Its most recent spend was in 2022. It comes with several MOTs back to 2006; the most recent issue was in 2016. It has a current V5, is MOT and road-tax exempt and will needed to be trailered to its new home.

The previous MOT show the mileage to be the same/similar, so may indicate an issue with the clock.

Are you able to clarify why this needs to be trailered if it has V5, and is MOR and tax exempt?
