The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most influential and iconic cars of the 20th century. Born out of a need to provide affordable transport for the masses, it soon became one of the most recognisable pieces of design in history. Its immense success was due to its affordability, extreme reliability, and simple, durable engineering. Hitting the US market during a period that valued its exceptional fuel efficiency and easy maintenance, the car was adopted by the 1960s counterculture as a symbol against consumerism. Ultimately, it holds the record as the most popular car produced on a single platform in history.

The VW 1200 holds a foundational and enduring position in the Beetle’s history, serving as both the quintessential mid-era model and, later, the entry-level economy option that sustained production for decades. Continuously improved since its 1954 debut, the 1964 model year benefited from key updates, including modifications to the front trailing arms and steering damper. It also featured a fully synchronised four-speed manual transmission, an automatic choke, and a revised heating system. Throughout its lifetime, the 1200 remained the mainstay of the lineup, ultimately earning the distinction of being the final Beetle model produced in Germany.

This 1967 example is the ‘Sparkafer’ sub-model is therefore devoid of a radio, fuel gauge, and electric washer system. It has been treated to a restoration by the former keeper, ensuring another lovely Beetle lives on for many more years to come.

Steve has cared for this charming Beetle since purchasing it two years ago. During that time, it’s safe to say he hasn’t made the most of owning one of Wolfsburg's finest, as it’s spent most of that time in secure, dry storage.

This lack of use and plans to move abroad have led Steve to part company with his beloved German classic. He wanswer any questions

After an 80-year run - and whichever generation you prefer - the Beetle is hugely recognisable and well loved.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original steel wheels, which have been finished in body colour and are in excellent condition. Topping them off is a set of VW chrome hub caps. There is some minor tarnishing to these, but they may polish up. If not, they are readily available should you wish to replace them.

The tyres are a matching set of Firestones, all of which have good tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The Beetle received a body restoration around ~2011, and some of the panels were replaced. The doors have an equal gap, and these open with ease and shut with a firm clunk thanks to the good door seals.

Paint

Finished in an off-white, which is thought to be the same colour as the original, the paintwork presents well with no obvious blemishes to point out.

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition, with only some light age-related marks, as expected for their age. The window seals are also in good order; these have possibly been replaced during the restoration.

The chrome work has a bright finish with just some slight tarnishing in places. All of the lights are in good order with no damage.

Interior

Keeping it period-looking, the interior has been restored, whilst retaining its original charm.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats have been re-trimmed in a dark red and cream vinyl, with matching door panels. These are in excellent condition.

A black set of carpets has been fitted throughout the cabin, and are in excellent condition.

Dashboard

The metal dashboard is painted to match the body and presents well. The single instrument cluster is working correctly and shows ~91,310 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Steve has replaced the original steering wheel with a more aesthetically pleasing, period-looking wheel, which is in excellent condition. The original is included along with some other spares.

The gear knob is in good order with just a small amount of light age-related use.

Mechanics

An air-cooled 1200cc flat-four produces an iconic sound that you instantly recognise before you’ve even seen the body.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1200cc fired up quickly with the turn of the key and runs with no issues reported. Steve has recently had the carburettor rebuilt by his mechanic. There is also a new battery on order, which will be fitted before the auction ends.

A look through the paperwork suggests the four-speed gearbox is a replacement from a 1500cc. This has a nice change, and the gears are easily selected.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the ride is typical of a VW Beetle: it does what it is supposed to with no knocks or bangs noted.

The brakes have been given the once-over, and everything is reported to be in good order, bringing the Beetle to a stop as you would expect.

The Drive

More than a means of transport, the Beetle is a characterful classic that rewards a relaxed pace and never fails to attract smiles wherever it goes.

Its 1200cc air-cooled flat-four engine produces a modest ~34–40 horsepower, but the Beetle’s lightweight construction and distinctive exhaust note can make it feel eager at lower speeds. The unassisted steering, four-speed gearbox, and simple mechanical controls provide a direct connection between driver and machine, making it easy to see what attracts people to the VW Beetle.

Electrics and Other

Not exactly overwhelmed with electric gadgets, the wipers, lights, and indicators are working as they should. There’s not really much else needed on a classic VW!

History and Paperwork

A detailed history file includes many photos and much information on the restoration.

The history file for the VW Beetle is quite comprehensive; it includes several invoices for parts purchased during the restoration. There is also a Dropbox folder that contains photographs and other information about the car from the former keeper, which Steve can send to the new custodian.

Steve is including a quantity of spares with the car, some of which were taken off during the restoration. These include, amongst other items: the original steering wheel, timing pulleys, and some chrome trim that may be needed should the new owner wish to return the car to its original condition.

A well-presented 60s Beetle, which has seen all the hard work carried out by the previous keeper, leaving nothing else left to do other than regular services and, of course, to enjoy it.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident, or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

at 91k if it is the original engine it must be getting tired, has it been replaced or rebuilt.

Hi, sorry about the late reply
There is a comprehensive build folder with the beetle.
I have just spoken with the previous owner Graham and like me he is not aware of the engine being rebuilt.
He never did it and I haven’t
It runs great and doesn’t smoke so if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I can’t foretell the future but yes it should be possible for you to drive it away.
The old battery was faulty so I’ve replaced that with a new one from heritage parts
Please let me reassure you that in the event that something crops up (god forbid) with the car I will fix it so it’s 100%.

The beetle is on 6volt electrics as were most of these in 1967 I believe
There should be photos of the under-pan and floor in the listing but let me assure you it’s pristine, and the best you’ll see.
It can be viewed but I work in Redcar Tuesday to Thursday inclusive so you can view it tomorrow or Sunday afternoon after 2pm as I’ll be selling my stuff at a car boot sale this Sunday morning
