Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

An icon of freedom and adventure, the VW split-screen camper blends retro charm with practicality, turning every journey into an occasion.

The Volkswagen T2 Splitscreen represents the final chapter in the legendary “Splitty” story, marking the end of an era before the introduction of the Bay Window model. Instantly recognisable by its iconic split front windscreen, charming curves, and unmistakable silhouette, the T2 is as much a cultural symbol as it is a vehicle. Built for versatility and adventure, it was equally at home hauling surfboards to the beach, winding through scenic countryside, or serving as a cosy home-on-wheels for weekend getaways.

By 1967, Volkswagen had refined the Splitscreen formula, offering improved reliability and usability while keeping the quirky character that won it a global following. Today, it remains a treasured classic, celebrated for its laid-back driving style, enduring simplicity, and the sense of freedom it inspires.

Coming to market after just over four years with our vendor, this T2 was originally imported from the US in 2016, and as such, has a left-hand drive set up. 'Ruby' the camper, has had restorative work completed where the interior sections show in lovely condition. The bodywork has also received attention over its years, although there are some works to do on the mechanical side of things to bring it up to a better standard for driving, it is also MOT and tax exempt.

For enthusiasts and collectors alike, owning a ’67 Splitty is more than just having a vintage VW - it’s holding a piece of motoring history and an enduring icon of the open road.

Take a closer look at the listing to appreciate what is on offer with this charming T2.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Joy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

'Ruby' has given us a few lovely adventures - we just love the spirit of getting out on the open road and exploring.

Joy originally won "Ruby”, the camper, several years ago, "I bought a raffle ticket online and when I went to purchase there were two tickets, I thought they must be there for a reason for this so I went ahead - I was shocked to receive the call to say I'd won!". Incidentially don't forget to enter our raffle for a Morris Minor Convertible - tickets are just £4.50 and link above under 'WIN A CAR'.

Okay, so back to this lovely camper, Ruby - sadly after coming home to Joy and her family, the camper didn't see a great deal of travelling, mainly as there was little time to get full use out of it. Joy told us, "I was I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with her, keep, sell, I couldn't really decide the best thing to do. We hadn't used it as much as I thought we would, but we made sure to turn her over regularly and take her out on short trips to keep Ruby running well".

With more modern cars at home, Joy found Ruby a little different to drive than her other transport options, se said "I've taken her out a few times, but have finally decided that the VW was not for me, its a personal preference really, I'm just used to driving newer vehicles".

The reason for sale now, is that Joy would like to put the money towards a newer style van, and whilst she loves the camper, Joy would rather it go to someone who can use it as it deserves.

Should you have any questions about the VW, Joy would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its iconic two-tone paint, split windscreen, and charming curves, the T2 Splitscreen Camper is a rolling piece of nostalgia that turns heads wherever it goes.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with a set of 15" VW wheels, these are finished in chrome. All appeared to be in good condition; we didn’t notice any major issues, but a thorough polish over to take off some of the markings would really enhance the wheels.

The front of the T2 is fitted with Mazzini Eco 307 tyres and a spec of 175/65. To the rear the car fitted with Minerva Emi Zero van tyres. We were unable to date code the tyres.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the camper and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of the VW appears to be in very good condition, as you'd expect for a restored example. All doors, the boot, and the engine bay open and close as expected. The panel gaps are well-aligned, and we didn’t notice any visible dents on any of the panels.

We noted some signs of splitting to the inside rear door edge, although were unable to verify the extent of this.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all the media files for a comprehensive view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the vehicle for yourselves.

image

Paint

The red-over-white colourway is a beautiful combination for the "Splitty", perfectly capturing the late 60s style of the vehicle. The paint coverage is even across the car with no noticeable differences in colour, presenting to a great overall restored standard.

There are some minor chips on the roof edges along the top side of the camper, a small mark on the top of the roof on the passenger side and some small chips over the bodywork, although these are subtle and required close inspection to notice.

The images have been taken from various angles to give you a clear view of the camper, just as you would see it in person. Please take the time to carefully assess the high-resolution images and videos provided to form your own opinion about the paint's condition.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass on the camper appears to be in excellent condition. The seals all seem to be in good order, with very little perishing.

The headlights and indicators are free from chips, as are the rear lights. There were a few signs of pitting and tarnishing to the chrome work, although nothing majorly concerning. Badges and emblems are present and correct.

We noted a slight split to the passenger side front bumper trim and some wear to the bumper, although had to look fairly closely to spot these observations.

We also noted the vinyl finish to the rear, had started to lift slightly on the section where the bed meets the driver side door edge. Although, nothing that couldn't be re-affixed with a little attention.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review the video. We guide you across all areas of the VW, as if you were standing there yourself, so you can see in greater detail how the van is presented.

image

Interior

A cabin full of retro charm - simple, functional, and brimming with nostalgic character, ready to turn every journey into an adventure.

Seats and Carpets

The VW is equipped with cream vinyl seats finished with red piping and fitted with front seatbelts. These are in great condition with minimal signs of wear. The rear seats are also in excellent shape again showing the same finish, with no concerning issues noted.

It’s the rear interior section that really makes the camper what it is. The furniture appears to be in excellent condition, with the cupboards offering plenty of storage space for weekends away and functioning smoothly, opening and closing as they should.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the camper. This covers off the angles inside the VW for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The simplistic black driver’s dial looked great and was functioning as expected when we visited the car.

The odometer read ~76,771 at the time of our visit.

The cream dash is in excellent condition - the dials, switches, and controls all appear to be in great shape, with surfaces free from fogging or scratching.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wood rim, 3-spoke steering wheel is a simple setup and looks to be in great condition.

The gloss white gear stick is in smart shape, with all numbers clearly legible.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

Powered by an air-cooled flat-four engine, the T2 is full of charm and delivers that iconic VW soundtrack with a laid-back cruising style.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up from cold, we noted no concerns, and the gearbox worked well producing no unwanted noises.

We noted the accelerator pedal was a little off, and may require some closer attention from the future owner to identify the route cause.

We took the vehicle out on some local roads, to get a better feel for what this campervan is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the camper van through the gears and gaining an overview of how it performs.

Take a look at the mechanical video to see the camper starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks or bangs from the suspension when we were on the road, and the ride felt comfortable. Looking over the underside of the van during our visit, noted no observed issues.

The brakes felt to have no vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the camper to a stop with the kind of stopping power you'd expect from a vehicle of this era.

However, we did note that the brakes felt to pull to one side, this would be a key consideration for the future owner to attend to.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the T2.

image

The Drive

The T2 Campervan is a pleasant place to be, sat in the supportive seats comfortably motoring along, or stopped to relax in the living compartment.

The VW offers a great sense of adventure with endless possibilities for exploration, whether it's a weekend trip away, a leisurely cross country road trip, or simply as a day van this iconic Volkswagen Camper is the perfect fit.

image

Electrics and Other

The VW features minimal electrical components, keeping in theme with its heritage. The cabin features a Sony CD / stereo in the dashboard area.

During our time with the vehicle, we noticed no electrical faults, with the horn, lights and gauges working as expected. All switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in great condition.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the camper, although Joy told us everything was in working order, as far as she was aware.

image

History and Paperwork

With low ownership and a great level of interior restoration already completed, with a little attention, the charming VW will be well set for its next adventures.

The VW had servicing competed in September 2024 by the current owner, covering off; an oil service, alternator belt adjustment, joint greasing, lights and tyre checks, new oil pressure switch and dashboard wiring work.

We cover the history of the VW in our paperwork gallery. Take a look over the previous servicing records and restoration receipts to see more behind the camper.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
