Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Depending on the body type, the T2 model has been used as a Transporter, Kombi or Microbus - but probably the most well known of all is the hugely popular Campervan.

Following the huge success of the T1 Split Screen, 1967 brought us the production of the second generation VW T2. Commonly known as the bay-window, or pre 1971, such as this one we have here - the early bay. The T2 is slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, and was given the 47BHP, 1.6L engine and a 12 volt electrical system.

Westfalia conversions are the crème de la crème for the VWs, and this one is no exception. The inside is fitted out with just about as much as can possibly be, from storage, cooker, sink, and enabling you to fully stand up is the pop top roof.

This camper has been in current ownership since 2020, having been first registered in the UK in 2011. Since then it has had in excess of ~£15,000 spent on it in the current ownership, as well as significant expenditure with marque experts Type 2 detectives in 2016.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Nicola the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I wanted to enjoy the T2 for weekends away, we did as much as we could on this car to get it ready for trips.

With two previous UK keepers, the camper came into the country from California in 2011 and more recently during Nicola's ownership, she's gone to town on this VW T2. This has totted up some quite hefty invoices, all of which can be seen in the paperwork gallery.

With the purchase completed in the midst of lockdowns, there were some delays getting the VW finished in time for Nicola to emigrate to the South of France, as the original plan was to take it over there. However, with the emigration complete, the VW didn’t make it, and so is now looking for a new home. Nicola will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

A 1968 model means this VW is classed as the more sought after early bay - finished in baby blue the camper has a true retro feel about it.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the Westy have been replaced at some point with some Empi style wheels, which are polished. They are free from any scuffs or corrosion. There is some slight tarnishing in a couple of places, which would polish up.

The tyres are two different makes front and rear, but do have a good amount of tread remaining as they are quite new.

Please take a look at the gallery for detailed images.

Bodywork

Walking around the bodywork of the camper it looks to be good condition. The T2 did have some restoration in California a number of years ago which has stood the test time. There doesn't appear to be any major areas of concern looking at the outside of the T2 - you will notice a few areas of light bubbling that may need attention at some point as is common across these campers.

The doors look to align as they should, as does the engine cover, side door and rear door. Everything opens and closes as it should. You do have to have a firm hand to close the doors, which is the norm, especially when the door seals have been replaced.

The pop top roof is in very good condition. There is some slight discoloration to the orange material, but it is not damaged and should be good for a number of years. There is also a nearly new awning included, which will attach to the side of the T2.

Please take your time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this German classic.

Paint

Finished in white over baby blue, the T2 has seen some paintwork carried out when Nicola got the vehicle in 2020. This was done as part of the ~£15,000 restoration, ensuring the VW stayed in a well presented condition for the new keeper. It was noted that there is some micro blistering to some of the panels.

There are no obvious or noticeable chips to mention, as the vehicle hasn’t really had a great deal of use since the work was carried out.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the T2 early bay at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves.

Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car all looks to be in excellent condition. There are some light age related scratches as you would expect. The seals all look to be in good order with no or very little perishing.

The headlights and indicators are free from any chips, as are the rear lights.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

A light interior and pop top roof gives a sense of space in the campervan - with everything you need, including the kitchen sink.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in a cream vinyl. There is some wear to the driver's seat and it has a couple of small splits on the stitching. The passenger seat has less wear but does have a small hole in the material. With seats and covers readily available, this wouldn't be too much of a job to rectify if you wished. The door cards are in reasonable condition, but would benefit from a clean. The carpet in the front of the VW is in good order with no signs of excessive wear. Moving to the headlining, this has started to sag in the front section of the cabin.

It is the rear which makes this T2 what it is. The furniture looks to be the original Westfalia-Werke-K-G which was installed when it was built. The cupboards are all in very good condition, offering plenty of storage space for weekends away. Opening and closing as they should, with the push of a button the doors are locked in place for travelling. There has been a new sink and cooker fitted in 2020, and so are like new. The vinyl flooring covers the floor area in the rear, which is in good condition. Let’s not forget about the pop top roof, which takes seconds to pop up and is a huge addition to the van, offering much more space inside the campervan.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard has escaped any cracking, which is nice, as it spent a number of years in the Californian sun, and the fascia is also free from any splits. The instruments are reported to be working as they should, with the odometer showing a reading of ~59,455 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel has been replaced for a wood rim, three spoke wheel, which is in very nice condition.

The gear knob looks to be the original. There are no numbers on it, these are located on the dashboard, showing the shift pattern.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

Powered by a 1600 cc air cooled engine - the T2 is running like a dream thanks to having had a new engine fitted in 2016.

Engine and Gearbox

Whoever has owned the T2 in the past has never been shy of giving it exactly what it needed, which can be seen from some of the invoices. One of the biggest costs has been for a new engine, which has also been fitted with an electronic distributor for easy reliable starting.

The T2 starts up with ease and sounds like it should, with the distinctive tune of an air-cooled VW we all recognise. There are no issues to report by the seller, and the T2 drives as it should, moving through the four-speed gearbox as you would expect. As is the normal, the gears do take a little finding, but once you are used to it, there doesn’t appear to be any problem.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has been given a full check over, with the front dampers replaced with Spax adjustable type. Since these have been fitted the VW has not really covered any miles.

The brakes have been fitted with new discs and pads at the front. It has also had the wheel bearings replaced and some work carried out to the steering box.

The Drive

Perfect for short getaways, with everything you need to help you through the weekend - it is simply a case of loading it up and off you go! The VW T2 may not be the fastest thing in the world, but it’s more about the experience it will give you, and the adventures it will take you on.

Electrics and Other

As mentioned, the cooker has been replaced, and this is fed from a gas bottle located in the cupboard below. There is also an external socket fitted for electric hook up offering the use of 240 volt whilst on a camp site. The other switchgear is reported to be working as it should.

History and Paperwork

Imported in to the UK in 2011, this baby blue over white Californian camper has had significant expenditure in the UK as detailed in the history gallery.

The latest invoice to come with this lovely 1968 VW T2 Westfalia campervan was when the vehicle was collected after the restoration from Fastlane Autocare on 30th January 2021, at a cost of £15,974.00. In 2016 the camper had some significant work completed by marque experts Type 2 Detectives too, take a look through the invoices to see the details.

The T2 is now MOT exempt, with the last one expiring on 29.05.2021. Since then it has covered just ~450 miles and so there shouldn’t be an issue if you wished to put a test on it.

The V5 is present and shows there have been 2 previous UK keepers since it came to the UK in 2011.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
