Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

Few vehicles embody freedom, simplicity, and cultural significance quite like the Volkswagen T2 Bay-Window.

Introduced as the evolution of the legendary Split-Screen Bus, the Bay-Window brought improved drivability, a wider cabin, and a more refined take on Volkswagen’s iconic transporter philosophy. Loved by generations for its charm, usability, and unmistakable silhouette, it cemented itself as a symbol of adventure, community, and the open road.

This VW Campervan now comes to market after over ~30 years of family ownership, as a characterful, well-preserved example ready for its next chapter. While not restored, it retains the authentic feel and lived-in warmth of an original VW camper, the kind that instantly transports you back in time the moment you climb aboard.

Showing age in all the right places, and offering a solid foundation for light improvement or continued enjoyment as-is, this T2 Bay-Window stands as a charming and usable classic that provides an exciting opportunity for the next owner, it even comes with its original toolkit.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Elisabeth the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

After decades of family ownership, I feel it’s time for someone new to enjoy this campervan the way it deserves.

Elisabeth has been the custodian of this charming bay-window campervan for ~2 years, having inherited it from her father, who himself was only the second owner. The van has been part of the family for a long time, cherished more as a sentimental classic than a regular road companion.

Her father, John known as 'JD' purchased the van in 1995, Elisabeth told us; "We have always called it JD'S Van. As a professional engineer with decades of experience, my dad was very selective about the vehicles he bought. He previously owned an MG Magnette. He was immediately drawn to the integrity of its engineering and the unusually original condition for a 1969 model."

He enjoyed the van for decades, using it sparingly but caring for it as a treasured piece of the family’s history. After inheriting it, Elisabeth continued to look after the campervan, ensuring it stayed in good order, but admits that it simply isn’t being used enough to justify keeping it. With this in mind, she has made the decision to pass it on to a new owner.

Someone who will appreciate it the van, enjoy its retro charm, and perhaps return it to the open road where it belongs, she tells us the originality really stands out; "The van still retains its factory Devon fittings, right down to the extremely rare original VW tool kit, something collectors actively search for and very rarely find. It also has the original fridge, stove and curtains, making it an authentic period piece rather than a modernised interpretation."

Elisabeth will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

True to its classic camper heritage, the exterior of this 1969 T2 Bay-Window blends unmistakable VW charm with the honest character of a well-loved, long-owned family vehicle.

Wheels and Tyres

The campervan sits on its traditional steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, some of the hubcaps are dented and are showing signs of rust.

The tyres appear in usable legal condition.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the VW and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork presents in decent condition for its age, with the unmistakable straight-line simplicity of the early T2 design.

Panel fit appears visually consistent, the doors, tailgate, and sliding door all open and close as they should except the driver's door which may needs some attention as it struggles to close from the inside.

This VW campervan has a fair amount of patina with corrosion in a number of locations, however, most looks surface level with a few areas needing a bit more attention, e.g. the bottom of the passenger door.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in a classic light cream colour, the paint retains a pleasing vintage look. There are age-related imperfections consistent with long-term family ownership, but it presents as a straight, usable example that wears its history proudly.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass appears clear and free from major damage, with light signs of age expected on an unrestored vehicle of this era.

The trim, handles and badges are in good condition. The bumpers have a few marks and dents but nothing major. The mirrors have a lot of pitting and corrosion. Also the drivers side mirror glass is missing.

image

Interior

True to its period charm, the interior of this T2 presents a wonderfully original and honest atmosphere, retaining much of its classic character while showing the gentle wear of a life well-used and well-loved.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats appear to be in clean, usable condition with age-related wear consistent with an unrestored camper of this era. Upholstery remains largely original in look and feel, offering a genuine 1960s VW experience.

The rear seating and bed area also present well, with coverings that show light patina but no major damage. Flooring and mats display typical signs of use, aligning with the van’s long-term family ownership.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard retains its simple, functional layout with classic VW switchgear and instrumentation still in place.

The painted metal surfaces show the expected wear for a vehicle of this age but remain appealingly honest.

Controls and dials appear complete, and the cabin maintains the straightforward, utilitarian charm that defines early bay-window models

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original-style steering wheel presents with age-related fading and light marks, consistent with decades of regular use.

The gear stick and surrounding linkage appear in standard configuration, with the long-throw shift action typical of early T2s.

Both elements add to the van’s authentic driving feel and reinforce its unspoilt, period-correct interior character.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically simple, charmingly robust, and built with the durability VW is known for.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by its classic air-cooled flat-four engine, the campervan starts and runs with the familiar sound and feel enthusiasts expect. The engine bay appears tidy and honest, showing typical signs of age but no obvious concerns.

The cold start video shows the VW start in below zero temperature first time.

The manual gearbox operates through the characteristic long-throw shift pattern of early T2 models, selecting gears as expected for a van of this vintage. As with many classic Volkswagens, the mechanical setup remains simple, straightforward, and entirely serviceable.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in standard configuration, offering the compliant, relaxed ride the early bay-window is known for. Components show typical ageing but no immediate issues were noted on visit.

Brakes are believed to be in original specification, presenting as functional.

image

The Drive

On the road, the campervan provides the quintessential vintage VW driving experience: steady, characterful and full of charm. The unmistakable engine note and the relaxed, enjoyable pace are part of its appeal.

Elisabeth tells us; "Wherever it goes, it attracts attention. People smile, wave, reminisce and ask about it. It is the sort of vehicle that makes an impression, and the drive reflects exactly what makes these early T2s so iconic. It is simple, charming motoring with real personality."

The engine pulls smoothly and the gearing is well-suited to relaxed cruising. It delivers exactly what enthusiasts love about early T2s.

No noises were heard while on the drive.

image

Electrics and Other

The electrics appears largely original in layout, retaining the simplicity that defines early bay-window campervans.

Switchgear, gauges, and cabin electrics present as honest and functional, with typical age-related wear expected of a 1960s Volkswagen.

Lighting and basic controls were confirmed to be in working order as far as Elisabeth was aware, these were not checked during our visit. The Campervan also comes with its original toolkit.

image

History and Paperwork

As a long-standing family-owned vehicle passed down through generations, this Volkswagen T2 Campervan has been cared for and now needs a new owner to use and improve.

The VW Campervan comes with a collection of paperwork documenting its life, including historic MOT certificates and evidence of maintenance carried out over the years. It comes with its original toolkit too.

Much of its story is tied to Elisabeth’s father, who was the second owner and cherished the van for decades before passing it on. The records reflect a pattern of steady upkeep rather than major restoration, in keeping with the van’s honest and original character. She tells us; "My dad maintained the van himself to an exceptional standard. Engineering was both his profession and his passion. Routine servicing and mechanical care were completed consistently throughout his ownership.'

Elisabeth has ensured that the documents she inherited remain with the vehicle, providing continuity and reassurance for the next owner. Together, the paperwork and family history create a clear narrative of long-term care and responsible ownership.

Elisabeth told us; "This van was a big part of our family life. My dad took it all over the country with his grandchildren, creating many happy memories. The sound of the engine is something I will always associate with him. Rather than leave it standing, I want it to go to someone who will appreciate exactly what it is: a well maintained, unmodified 1969 T2 Devon Convertible with outstanding provenance and originality. It deserves to be enjoyed, driven and cared for. I have priced it realistically so that it can find the right new owner who will continue its story."

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
