Introduction

Who would have thought one affordable, simple car would become one of the most legendary vehicles ever produced?

The Volkswagen Beetle holds the title as one of the world's most influential cars of the 20th century. Born out of a need to provide affordable transport for the masses, it soon became one of the most recognisable pieces of design in history. Its immense success was due to its affordability, extreme reliability and simple, durable engineering. Hitting the US market during a period that valued its exceptional fuel efficiency and easy maintenance, the car was adopted by the 1960s counterculture as a symbol against consumerism. Ultimately, it holds the record as the most popular car produced on a single platform in history.

The VW 1200 holds a foundational and enduring position in the Beetle’s history, serving as both the quintessential mid-era model and, later, the entry-level economy option that sustained production for decades. Continuously improved since its 1954 debut, the 1964 model year benefited from key updates, including modifications to the front trailing arms and steering damper. It also featured a fully synchronised four-speed manual transmission, an automatic choke and a revised heating system. Throughout its lifetime, the 1200 remained the mainstay of the line-up, ultimately earning the distinction of being the final Beetle model produced in Germany.

This 1972 example was restored for use as a wedding car in 2019. It was used for a couple of years before Nigel took ownership.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Nigel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“I love Beetles; I already own one tucked away in the garage – one more can’t hurt, right?”

Already owning a Beetle that doesn’t get much use, Nigel spotted this one for sale, and its excellent condition sold him, despite knowing deep down that he probably wouldn’t use it much.

The sale went through and, yes, he was right; he didn't really use it! Since taking ownership, it has been used a handful of times, with the rest of its time spent in dry storage. The lack of use is what’s leading to the sale of the German icon.

Exterior

Instantly recognisable by many generations – the VW Beetle is a true icon.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original steel wheels, these are finished in body colour and are in excellent condition. They are topped off with a set of chrome VW hubcaps, which are also in excellent condition.

The tyres are a matching set with a whitewall stripe, and all have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The Beetle received a body restoration around 2019, before it was used as a wedding car. Nigel doesn’t know what was carried out during the restoration.

The doors have an equal gap, all the panels appear to align correctly, and no dings or dents were spotted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in an off-white that we believe matches the original, the paintwork presents well, with no obvious blemishes.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition, with only some light age-related marks, as expected for their age. The window seals are also in good order.

The chrome headlight surrounds and bumpers all have a bright finish, with no visible signs of tarnishing. All of the lights are in good order, with no damage to the lenses.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

A well-presented interior has been perfect for many brides-to-be.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats have been retrimmed in cream vinyl. They have no rips or holes, although there is a slight stain on the corner of the passenger seat.

The carpets have been replaced and are in excellent condition, showing very little sign of use.

image

Dashboard

The metal dashboard is painted to match the body and presents well. The single instrument cluster is working correctly and shows approximately ~70,303 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A three-spoke wooden steering wheel has been fitted to the Beetle and is in excellent condition. The gear knob is golf ball-style and in good condition.

image

Mechanics

With a 1200cc engine, there's no need to rush about – simply relax and enjoy the ride.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1200cc engine fires up quickly on the turn of the key and runs without any reported issues. Nigel had a new starter motor fitted in June 2026. The Beetle pulls well through the four-speed gearbox, with no problems reported.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the ride is typical of a VW Beetle; it does what it should, and the ride is comfortable, even over speed bumps, where no knocks or bangs were noted.

The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line, with Nigel reporting no issues.

The Drive

Driving a Beetle is a wonderfully nostalgic experience for those who have owned one in the past, and for those who haven’t, it’s a refreshing change from modern cars. The air-cooled flat-four engine delivers modest performance, but its unhurried pace has real charm, backed by a distinctive engine note from behind. Beetles never fail to turn heads.

image

Electrics and Other

One nice thing about classic cars of this age is the lack of electrics! Everything is there for a reason and works correctly. There is some light age-related wear to the switches, but this is in keeping with the car's age.

image

History and Paperwork

The large history file dates back several years.

The Beetle’s history file is quite comprehensive, with a collection of invoices retained by several keepers over the years for various parts and different work carried out.

Fancy a new venture as a wedding car business? Now there's a possibility.

As a previous wedding car, presentation is absolutely key. This 1972 example is very well presented and ready to jump in and enjoy.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
