Surfs up!

By the early 1970s, the iconic VW T2 had already become a cultural symbol, loved for its simplicity, practicality and unmistakable design. Whether used for weekend getaways, beach trips or road adventures further afield, the T2 offered a unique blend of charm and usability that continues to win hearts decades later.

Coming from almost 11 years with our vendor, this 1971 example is finished in the original colour scheme of burgundy with a white roof and bumpers. The T2 has been built for practicality and usability, ideal for those days out at the beach, which is exactly what the vendor has used it for, as well as completing a tour around Great Britain!

A well-travelled T2 that’s ready to jump in and enjoy - perfect for those day trips out.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Tom the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Buying a T2 from the States was a sensible decision, as the corrosion is minimal.

Tom has owned the T2 for almost 11 years, he is the first UK keeper, as he imported it from Arizona. The T2 was in very good condition when it arrived from Arizona, with just some light surface corrosion and fading paintwork. There was no real rot to deal with, which was the appealing reason to import a T2 rather than source one in the UK.

With a full repaint, the T2 has been thoroughly enjoyed by Tom, using it regularly to go surfing and even embarking on a tour around Britain, which was completed successfully with no issues.

Wanting to move to a more modern T6.1, the T2 is now looking for a new home to enjoy it as much as Tom has enjoyed it.

Tom will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

With a factory pop-top, the VW T2 is ideal for days out or weekends away.

Wheels and Tyres

The original steel wheels have been painted black and appear to be in good condition. These are all finished with chrome VW hub caps.

The tyres all look to be in good condition and have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

Walking around the T2, the bodywork is in very good condition, with no obvious dings or dents, except on the side door runner, which was caused when refitting the door. There are a couple of blisters in places, but overall, given the age of the T2, these are minimal, thanks to spending most of its life in Arizona.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

When Tom got the T2 from Arizona, the paintwork was faded, so it was refreshed in the original colour. This was carried out ~10 years ago, and it still presents well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good order; there are some minor age-related marks, as you would expect for their age. The seals and rubbers appear to be in good condition, with no noticeable perishing. The passenger-side quarter window is stuck and has been that way for several years because Tom didn’t want to force it open.

The front and rear lights are in good condition, with no damage to the lenses.

The chrome work does have some tarnishing and pitting due to age.

Interior

Simple, practical and enough space to accommodate you for a single night or a few nights away - you decide.

Seats and Carpets

The seats inside the T2 were retrimmed in 2015 and, since then, have enjoyed many trips to the beach. They are in good condition, with some signs of age, but are totally usable and comfortable, and if you fancy a nap, there’s always the original hammock, which can be opened within the roof space.

In the front, the carpets have been taken out; it’s easier to get in from a surf with wet feet and avoid getting the carpets wet. In the rear, some chequered vinyl has been fitted, which is easy to sweep and wipe down. This has been taped up in a couple of places where there are a couple of small holes, but it is very easy to replace.

Dashboard

The original dashboard has a couple of minor splits, probably due to its time in Arizona.

The odometer shows ~7,371 miles, and additional oil pressure and temperature gauges have been fitted.

The air vents have been utilised for speaker locations.

All of the switchgear looks to be in good order, with just some expected wear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel has a light patina but is perfectly usable.

The wooden gear knob bears the Wolfsburg emblem, with light signs of use in keeping with its age.

Mechanics

A 2.0-Litre Air-cooled flat-four provided the T2 with a decent amount of power.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre air-cooled flat-four fires up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported from Tom.

The engine has recently received a service, which also included two new cone air filters.

The original four-speed gearbox has a smooth shift, and the gears can be easily selected without issue.

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the T2 is a pleasure to be in; the ride is simple and smooth, just easily moving along with no knocks or bangs interrupting the laid-back pace of air-cooled motoring.

With a firm press of the pedal, the brakes bring the T2 to a stop in a straight line, with no problems reported.

The Drive

Driving a T2 is a wonderfully laid-back, nostalgic experience that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. With its upright driving position, it feels mechanical and connected in a way modern vehicles don’t, and the classic VW air-cooled engine hums away behind you, while the soft suspension gently soaks up the road, adding to its charm.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the T2 are pretty simple; all the switchgear is working as you would expect, apart from the horn, which Tom tells us he has disconnected because it kept going off when he turned right.

The head unit is connected to the leisure battery side of the wiring; however, the leisure battery does need to be replaced, as this is not fitted.

History and Paperwork

The original owner’s manual has survived many travels in the T2.

When Tom got the T2 almost ~11 years ago, he was never one for saving paperwork; instead, he would rather be off touring or surfing, so there isn’t a great amount of paperwork in the T2 history file. There are some invoices for work carried out and some paperwork from when it was imported to the UK.

Finish work on a Friday, throw a bag in the back of the T2 and off you go for the weekend… What could be better? Capable of many miles, as Tom has proven with his tour around Britain.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off or does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
