Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

Few vehicles capture the spirit of freedom and adventure quite like the Volkswagen Campervan.

By the early 1970s the iconic VW camper had already become a cultural symbol, loved for its simplicity, practicality and unmistakable design. Whether used for weekend getaways, beach trips or road adventures further afield, the T2 offered a unique blend of charm and usability that continues to win hearts decades later.

This 1972 example presents as a wonderfully characterful camper, finished in a classic light colour scheme that suits the timeless shape of the bay window perfectly. With its charming interior, period styling and unmistakable presence, it captures everything enthusiasts love about classic Volkswagen campers.

Coming to market after almost ~4.5 years with our vendor, this camper offers an appealing opportunity to own a usable and characterful classic ready to be enjoyed - it is MOT and road tax exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We’ve loved owning the camper and using it for weddings, but it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.

Mark has owned this Volkswagen T2 since 2021, during which time it has been used as a charming wedding vehicle, perfectly suited to the character and presence of a classic VW camper.

However, with retirement approaching and the arrival of a grandchild, Mark and his wife now find they simply don’t have the time to enjoy the camper as they once did. As a result, they feel the time is right for the van to move on to a new owner who can make the most of it and continue creating special memories with it.

Mark will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The exterior of this 1972 Volkswagen T2 presents with the unmistakable charm that has made these campervans icons for generations.

Wheels and Tyres

The camper sits on classic steel wheels finished with Volkswagen hubcaps which suit the van’s original aesthetic perfectly, also included in the sale are chrome hubcaps. The wheels look in decent condition, showing some signs of visual corrosion.

The van features three Presa tyres and one Toledo tyre, they all appear in good usable condition - however, please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork appears straight overall and presents well for a classic camper of this era. Panel fit looks consistent and the van maintains the classic silhouette that makes the T2 so recognisable on the road.

You'll see some bubbling in the images and videos in localised areas - we've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The paintwork retains a bright and tidy finish, giving the camper a clean and attractive appearance. While minor age-related marks may be present, the overall presentation remains very appealing and well suited to a classic vehicle of this type.

Some rust was spotted at the time of the visit - the main areas we saw were under the rear passenger door and also on the passenger and driver arch. The paint is peeling a little on the roof and a split on the rear driver's side rear panel.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass throughout appears to be in good condition, allowing excellent visibility from the cabin.

Exterior trim pieces, lights and brightwork all appear complete and present well, maintaining the van’s classic character.

A few visible cracks can be found in the painted bumpers.

image

Interior

Inside, the camper offers a charming and welcoming cabin that perfectly reflects the relaxed lifestyle these vehicles are known for.

Seats and Carpets

The seating presents well and retains a classic period look that suits the camper perfectly.

The rear seating area has been arranged into a comfortable lounge-style layout, offering a cosy space to relax when parked. There are some marks on the top of the bench that were pictured.

The rest of the interior upholstery appears tidy and inviting.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard remains simple and functional in true Volkswagen fashion. The controls and instrumentation are neatly laid out and contribute to the authentic vintage driving experience that these campers are known for.

At the time of visit, Mark assured us this is all in working order.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever both appear in good usable condition.

Their simple design and classic appearance match the character of the van and contribute to the authentic driving feel behind the wheel.

image

Mechanics

Underneath its charming exterior, the T2 features Volkswagen’s famously robust air-cooled mechanical layout.

Engine and Gearbox

The rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four engine presents neatly within the engine bay. This simple and proven design has long been known for its reliability and ease of maintenance, making it well suited to classic camper ownership.

No weird noises or knocks were heard at the time of visit.

The gearbox operates as expected, providing smooth progress and delivering the relaxed driving experience.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension delivers the comfortable ride expected from this classic campervan, helping make longer journeys enjoyable.

The braking system performs as intended, providing reassuring stopping power.

image

The Drive

Behind the wheel, the T2 delivers the relaxed and characterful driving experience that has made these classic campers so beloved.

Mark informed us that the camper drives exactly as it should, with no issues to report at the time of our visit.

Please watch the On the Road video to see the van starting from cold and a short drive out.

image

Electrics and Other

The camper’s basic electrical systems appear consistent with the simplicity typical of classic Volkswagens, contributing to its straightforward ownership experience.

At the time of visit, Mark told us all electrics were in working order.

image

History and Paperwork

While the history file is not extensive, this Volkswagen T2 benefits from documented work carried out during its time with the current owner.

During Mark’s ownership a considerable amount of work has been carried out to keep the camper running well and enjoyable to use, Mark told us the front chassis had been replaced, and a repair to the side door. The van is accompanied by invoices that document this work, providing reassurance that it has been maintained and cared for during his time with it.

Also a few extras are included, i.e. a cover and some new parts.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi. Can you let me know when she last did a long run, say, more than 100 miles. And would she need to be transported or driveable.
Thanks.
