Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

What's not to love about a classic VW camper! The T2 respects its heritage and is well set for adventure ahead.

The Volkswagen T2 Bay Window camper is a true icon of freedom and adventure. As one of the final iterations of the beloved Bay Window line, this model blends retro charm with practical versatility. Known for its distinctive styling, pop-top roof, and go-anywhere spirit, it remains a favourite among road-trippers, surfers, and collectors alike. Whether you're chasing sunsets or setting up camp by the coast, the T2 Campervan promises a nostalgic journey with every mile.

Overall, this nostalgia packed VW, is an honest example, especially considering its ~46 years on the road. With its funky pop-top roof, retro interior, onboard cooker, fridge, sink, rear bed and rear drop down hammocks, the camper has all the equipment on hand that a fan of the great outdoors might need.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Charming and packed with great memories on the road, the VW will be greatly missed by the family.

We met with Kevin, the current owner, to hear more about his experience with the T2 over his past ~5 years of ownership. "The VW has been a great runner, and we've made really fond memories of being out camping locally and just enjoying the freedom the camper brings with it".

Kevin is an adventurer at heart, with a joy of travel and the T2 supports that well for what he's needed. With a move overseas on the horizon, the T2 reluctantly comes up for sale. Kevin will be happy to answer any questions about the campervan in the comments section below.

Exterior

The T2 still has that retro charm with its classic colour scheme - built for fun on the open road.

Wheels and Tyres

The T2 camper comes with 14" steel wheels with VW centre caps. All appeared to be in reasonable condition, we didn’t notice any major issues, just signs of age and marks from its years. The camper is fitted with a mix of Michelin Agilis 81 and Vredestein tyres. There were signs of cracking to the side walls as pictured.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the T2 and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork of the VW is in respectable condition - the panel lines look straight and well-aligned and both doors, manual pop-top roof and engine bay open and close without concern with the panels gaps all looking to line up well too. We noted a few signs of corrosion around the gutter rail sections on the top edge of the T2, to the edge of the window seals, and some under paint areas on the lower section of the campervan.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the camper for yourselves.

image

Paint

The VW is finished in beige, a classic colour choice for the camper. The coverage is reasonable across the van, but are some differences in colour and finish, likely from previous work over the years. There are some stone chips and marks that have been picked up over its years, and a few blemishes to the front, mainly around the lower part of the body and bonnet edges. There were some signs of the finish cracking around the door edge seams and a note of paint bubbling behind the rear bumper.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the camper as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the van to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Overall the glass and trim on the VW showed in decent shape with no major concerns. The seals look good around the outside and in line with the rest of the condition of the van.

The exterior trim and body fittings are in good shape, with no major issues spotted on the lights or lenses. Chromework shows well overall and we found no issues looking over the front bumper section although the rear bumper had a slight mark to the corner edge.

The pop-top with its retro finish, was a lovely classic touch to the T2 and the front VW badge set the T2 off nicely. There were a few marks to the front of the wheel trim, although not really a worry.

We've taken you around the vehicle in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

Designed for comfort on the move, it's a space built for road trips, campsite stops, and making memories.

Seats and Carpets

The cabin seats showed well and are finished in a retro gold coloured fabric. The seats were in good shape, with no major concerns, just some sagging to the cloth in some areas. The front spring supported seats were comfortable for both driver and passenger when out and about.

Black rubber mats in the front of the cabin show in reasonable condition and the floorpans under the mats showed no concerning issues. In the back, the vinyl flooring was a nice retro touch, although had started to lift slightly on the edges.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the camper. This covers off the angles inside the van for you to review and check the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dash across the centre console all appears in nice condition with no real issues to report. It's simple, effective and built for adventure, managing all of these tasks well.

The odometer showed with ~99,938 miles at the time of our visit.

The dials, and controls all appeared respectably with surfaces free from fogging. We noted no issues with any warning lights once on the road and the dials were all functioning without concern when starting up and driving the camper.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The simple, black, 2-spoke steering wheel shows in good condition and is in keeping with the rest of the interior.

The gear selector also looks to be in similar condition, mirroring the rest of the cabin area.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the heritage of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

Powered by a classic air-cooled flat-four engine - the VW is all about charm, character, and getting you wherever the adventure leads.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the camper, the van idled well and didn't show any signs of smoke etc. The manual gearbox showed no concerns with shifting the T2 through to the gears. The gearbox is an older design with reverse gear set to the back, which takes a little time to get familiar with.

We took the camper out around some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the van starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or issue from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling. Looking over the underside of the van during our visit, noted no major concerns and overall it showed respectably for its age here.

The brakes bring the T2 to a halt in a straight line with no juddering reported through the pedal - the stopping power and control was in-line with our expectations for an older camper van.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the VW.

image

The Drive

Driving the VW T2 is a relaxed, nostalgic experience. With its upright seating, large steering wheel, and gentle pace, it encourages you to slow down and enjoy the journey.

It’s more about cruising with charm than chasing speed - perfect for scenic routes and weekend getaways.

image

Electrics and Other

During our time with the VW we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear unspoilt and are in decent condition, especially considering its ~46 years on the road.

The key factor for the camper is the pull out bed to the rear which felt supportive. A nice hidden feature is the smaller pull out hammock type beds located under the pop top roof, although we were unable to fully inspect these.

The T2 is complete with a clean, well presented cooker hob, fridge and sink area. We were unable to test the functionality of this equipment on our visit, which may be a consideration for the future owner.

Kevin, the owner, told us everything was in working order, as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

Classic, honest and charming, the T2 is a nostalgic example of simpler motoring built for the great outdoors.

The VW has benefitted from some restorative work over its years where in 2015, the rear window section and offside and nearside wheel arches were repaired with over ~50 hours of labour work completed.

Other works have included a new windscreen washer pump in 2016, work on oil leaks and rear brake adjustment in 2014, new horn and rear fog light in 2013, a respray and replacement battery in 2011, engine work in 2007, oil change, fuel and air filter in 2005 and respray work, roof part replacement, new driving lamps set and tyre change in 2003.

We cover off a full overview of the T2's history in our paperwork gallery.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
