Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Consigner

Originally released in 1950, the Volkswagen T2 soon became the cult classic we know today, representing over half a century of happy holidays spent on the road.

The Type 2 (T2) was the second production model of German born manufacturer Volkswagen, following after the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle of the late 30’s.

This fresh new design introduced heaps of practicality, as well as offering an affordable option for those looking to enjoy short weekends away, trips to the coast, or country wide road trips without the added expense of paying for accommodation.

This T2 Campervan benefits from having been sympathetically restored to an agreeable standard by owner John, having opted to keep some aspects of the exterior like the tin top in original condition he feels this gives the vehicle an honest patina.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I’ve just been to Cornwall and back in the T2 and despite having owned it for two years, it still amazes me at how comfortable and capable this little camper can be.

John originally purchased the vehicle in May 2021 in somewhat of a ‘barn find’ situation, the van was mechanically sound and had had engine work carried out by previous owners, it only required minor restoration to the exterior to bring it up to scratch.

Over the last 12 months he has carried out minor restorations such as bodywork on the lower half of the van, new California doors that are completely rot free, and of course typical servicing.

John has just recently made a 770 mile trip to Cornwall and back in the T2 Campervan and couldn’t praise the vehicle any more if he tried. The only reason for sale is that he’s recently purchased a Morris Minor for his next project and can’t fit both of them in his garage, so whilst he loves the camper, he’d rather it go to someone who can store it as it deserves, instead of letting it sit outside through the winter while he keeps the Morris tucked away in the garage.

Exterior

The iconic design of the T2 is instantly recognisable and widely known as 'The' Volkswagen Camper, thanks to its fun and charismatic exterior.

Wheels and Tyres

The white steel wheels and chrome hub caps of the T2 are in good condition, with no visual signs of damage to the wheels themselves. The white painted steel wheels do suffer from some minor surface corrosion to the lip, however this does not take away from the overall appearance.

The tyres are Hankook and were fitted to the vehicle on 01.07.2022 and have done fewer than 1,000 miles since then, so these are in an as new condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork overall is in good condition, there are minor signs of corrosion on the upper third, however these are to the best of our knowledge only spots of surface corrosion that could be treated if the new owner wishes.

We could not spot any misaligned panels and John has replaced the cabin doors with Californian doors that are rot free, a well known issue on these vehicles.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork is in good condition also, with no major scratches, chips, or lacquer peel. Once more there are signs of corrosion to the upper third of the vehicle on the white paintwork, but the main body of the vehicle is well painted and appears to be in good condition.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass on the vehicle is in great condition with the front, side, and rear windows all free from scratches, chips, and cracks. The T2 features a louvre window on the drivers side, which is in full working order and the glass is in great condition too. Sadly the passenger side wing mirror is cracked, however this does not greatly affect visibility.

The white painted front and rear bumpers also present in great condition, with no signs of corrosion and no chips or scratches present to the paintwork, the bumpers are in no way dented or damaged either.

Interior

The star of the show - the interior of this car is in great condition with reupholstered interior furnishings, new period curtains, and all new cabinetry.

Seats and Carpets

The brown vinyl interior is in good condition, the seats show minimal signs of wear and doesn’t show any cracks, rips, or tears. The material is somewhat loose fitting toward the seat base, however this does not affect the seats functionality or visual appearance whatsoever.

The living quarters have been recently reupholstered, this is evident in their condition as the fabric is not worn or threadbare in any sense. The interior whilst having been refreshed has been done so in a period fashion to keep in line with the heritage of the vehicle.

Dashboard

The dashboard is simple as to be expected from the period of this vehicle, however it is in good condition with no visible damage or scratches. It’s fitted with a modern stereo, allowing the vehicles occupants to listen to radio or MP3 music.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The large two spoke steering wheel is in good condition also, showing no signs of wear or damage, it is in keeping with the overall condition of the rest of the vehicle.

The gear stick is also in fair condition, with no obvious damage that we could see during our visit and appears to be all original along with the steering wheel.

Mechanics

Featuring the 2.0L engine, this Volkswagen T2 packs enough punch to keep up with modern traffic, whilst offering a reasonable return on fuel economy and typical German reliability to boot.

Engine and Gearbox

John tells us that the engine was fully reconditioned by the previous owner approximately three years ago, along with the double SU carb conversion.

During our time with the vehicle the engine started just fine as can be seen in our ‘On The Road’ video and didn’t struggle to provide power during our drive.

The gearbox tells a similar story, not struggling with gear changes or making any untoward sounds on the day either. Having just completed a 770 mile trip to Cornwall and back, John happily vouches for the reliability of both engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The vehicle is sat on standard suspension and to the best of our knowledge these are the original items. Whilst out on the road we noted that the ride felt comfortable, with a good amount of shock absorption and no knocking or crashing sounds that we could hear.

A similar story can be told for the brakes, whilst not visible behind the steel wheels the brakes seem to be in good condition from a passengers perspective; they did not hesitate to stop the vehicle quickly and efficiently with no squeaking or grinding.

The Drive

The T2 Campervan is a pleasant place to be, be it in the comfortable seats lazily motoring along, or stopped to relax in the living compartment for a cuppa and a bit to eat. The whole vehicle offers a great sense of adventure with endless possibilities for exploration, whether it's a weekend trip away, a leisurely cross country road trip, or simply as a day van this iconic Volkswagen Camper is the perfect fit.

Electrics and Other

Whilst inspecting the vehicle we checked to make sure all electrical systems work as expected, including the radio, lights, and indicators. The interior lights in the living compartment work, although a little dim it would not be a big job to update these to more modern replacements.

History and Paperwork

With regular MOTs to prove road worthiness, recent servicing, and a sympathetic restoration by current owner John, this Volkswagen T2 Campervan is ready and raring to go.

Since its purchase John has restored this van to a moderate level, leaving certain areas in their original condition. Much of the work carried out has been done by John himself, so whilst paperwork for such jobs may not be present, John would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding his beloved camper in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
