Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Hot hatch fans form an orderly queue - a original and well cared for Campaign GTI.

Starting life as a humble family hatchback, the Golf was launched in 1974, moving away from the rear-mounted, rear-wheel-drive layout that VW was known for, instead opting for a front-engined, front-wheel-drive format. The GTI version of the Golf was first seen in 1975, with production starting in 1976.

The GTI was given a beefed-up body kit with wider arches and the now iconic red frame around the grille. Originally fitted with a 1.6-litre engine producing ~108bhp, mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. Weighing in at only ~810kg, the GTI could reach 60mph in ~9.2 seconds — very quick in the ’70s.

Coming to market after ~4 years with our vendor, this particular car is a 1983 Golf GTI Campaign - a limited-edition run-out model marking the end of the Mk1 GTI in the UK. It came with a distinctive mix of extra equipment, including Pirelli “P-slot” alloy wheels, a factory sliding sunroof, green-tinted glass, and twin headlamps. Inside, it featured a leather-trimmed steering wheel, striped seat upholstery, and the familiar red GTI grille. Importantly the 1.6-litre was upgraded to the later 1.8-litre, which would go on to be used in the Mk2.

Delivering the same lively performance as the standard GTI, the Campaign combined the classic hot hatch driving experience with a touch of exclusivity, making it one of the most sought-after Mk1 variants today.

A Mk1 Golf GTI in original condition - now that has your attention, continue reading to find out more about this hot hatch.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Owning an XR2 in my late teens, the Golf GTI was always the one I wanted — but at the time the insurance was just too much.

Most of us would agree the Mk1 Golf GTI is the original hot hatch, and it certainly lives up to its name. Lightweight, nimble, with good performance - it delivers a very rewarding driving experience, continuing to tick the boxes that gained it the reputation of the original hot hatch.

This lovely original example has been cherished by John for the past ~4 years.

Although thoroughly enjoyed, the car hasn’t been used an enormous amount, which is the reason for the sale of this original hot hatch.

John will be on hand to answer any of your questions in the comments.

Exterior

Being the run-out Campaign edition, the Golf GTI features the Pirelli P-slot alloy wheels and the gorgeous Lhasa Green paintwork.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Pirelli P-slots, the wheels are in excellent condition with no corrosion noted to the faces. There are a couple of minor marks to the face of the offside rear wheel.

The Golf is fitted with Pirelli 185/60/R14 tyres, which have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Golf and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the car, you won’t be disappointed as the bodywork is excellent - all of the panel gaps are visually equal, and no dings or dents were spotted.

There is a sliding factory sunroof, which operates correctly.

Being picky, there are a couple of very minor marks on the gutter rails in a couple of places but theses are minimal.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Lhasa Green', which was one of the six colours offered in the Campaign range, the paintwork presents extremely well with no obvious areas to point out. It’s just a case of standing back and admiring this hot hatch.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The factory tinted windows appear to be in good condition with no noticeable marks or excessive scratches.

All of the seals look to be in good order; we did notice just a small amount of shrinkage on the door window scraper seals.

The plastic arch trims and bumpers are all in excellent condition with just a couple of very minor marks.

image

Interior

Taking you straight back to 1983, the Golf GTI Campaign interior remains in highly original condition.

Seats and Carpets

The striped fabric seats, unique to the Campaign, are in good condition. The front and rear have some signs of patina, but certainly less than you would expect for the GTI's age. Both door cards are in good condition and damage-free.

Like the seats, the carpets do have minor signs of age — again, only to be expected. That said, this isn’t excessive, and they still present well.

Inside, the boot is clean and tidy and the parcel shelf has even escaped having a set of 6x9 speakers fitted.

image

Dashboard

The black dashboard is free from splits or cracks.

The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows ~155,014 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel is fitted, which is in good condition.

If there’s a more fitting gear knob for the car model, please let us know - it is in good order with minimal signs of age.

image

Mechanics

The fuel-injected 1.8-litre GTI engine is ample enough to provide an exciting driving experience in the ’80s hot hatch.

Engine and Gearbox

Producing around ~112bhp, the 1.8-litre 8-valve GTI engine fires up without hesitation and runs superbly, with no issues reported by John. Not only does it run well, but it also sounds good, thanks to the Milltek stainless steel exhaust, which improves sound and performance without being too intrusive, as can be heard in our On-the-Road video.

Thanks to some work on the linkage, the five-speed gearbox has a nice change, ensuring everything is tight with no play.

image

Suspension and Brakes

It has a reputation to uphold as the best hot hatch… and what better way to help do that than by replacing the tired suspension with a set of Bilstein dampers. These are excellent on the road, ensuring the GTI handles as you would expect.

The front and rear brakes have been overhauled, and the car comes to a stop in a straight line with no issues reported by John.

image

The Drive

Driving the Golf GTI Campaign is a lively and engaging experience. The car combines the nimble handling and sharp steering of the original GTI with the added exclusivity of its limited-edition features. The rev-happy 1.8-litre engine delivers eager performance, making it feel light and responsive on twisty roads, while its compact dimensions and communicative chassis keep you connected to the drive. It’s a car that blends everyday usability with genuine driving fun, capturing the spirit of the hot hatch in its purest form.

image

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear appears to be in good condition. However, we noticed that the auxiliary VDO gauges in the centre console weren’t operating in the driving video. Although this hasn’t been investigated, the gauges themselves don’t take an awful lot to connect, so it is likely to be relatively simple for a competent DIY mechanic.

History and Paperwork

A large history file complements the overall package for this classic ’80s hot hatch.

The history file is quite comprehensive for the Golf and dates back several years. It includes invoices for work carried out, parts purchased, old MOT certificates, and the original owner’s handbooks.

Finding an original example Golf GTI is a challenge, and they are few and far between. This makes finding a late-model Campaign edition a real treat for the enthusiasts and collectors amongst you.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in hi-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time — we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions — no matter how small — please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction house.
