Introduction

Kevin Jacutan
Professional Consigner

A stylish and well equipped fuel-injected Golf, a cracking 80s hatchback cabriolet.

In '76 Karmann presented Volkswagen with a convertible variant of the Golf, which featured a simple folding roof and later a roll bar introduced for safety purposes. Over the Golf's production, the body remained unchanged despite a wide variety of trim levels being introduced.

This example is coming to market from ~31 years ownership. Grandmother, mother, and now son the current custodian have had the car in the family since 1991. It comes with tons of provenance from this time, and presents in remarkably good condition considering the age and mileage. Serviced including timing belt change at the start of this year, we love cars coming from long ownership like this, and hope you appreciate it too, see the full details below.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kevin after meeting Dean the custodian, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

We're a family of car enthusiasts, and have loved enjoying this Mk1 GTi, especially in the summer with the roof down.

Coming to auction from a whopping ~31 year ownership in the family, this classic Mk1 GTi cabriolet has clearly been well cared for in that time. The vendors have just had a major service actioned at the start of the year that included a cambelt change and 4 new tyres being fitted. Dean tells us that "It has been a very reliable vehicle, not costly to run, great fun to drive and its very eye catching and always turns heads!".

No major work has been required over and above servicing, the only thing to note Dean says is "We had a Peco big bore exhaust fitted, which enhanced its sound". Dean will be on hand to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Body-coloured bumpers combined with the wider arches and additional trim really set this the GTi cabriolet apart.

Wheels and Tyres

Freshly refurbished, the wheels on this GTI have been powder coated and painted in a matching white. The 13" items are original, and the VW centre caps have been finished in black.

175/70R13 wheels are fitted, a matching set of Uniroyal RainExpert3's. They appear in good condition, with no signs of ageing etc to the tyre-wall and good tread for the new owner.

Bodywork

In convertible form, these Mk1 GTI's were produced by Karmann and badged accordingly. This particular example is believed to be all original in terms of panels, bar the front wings which were replaced in the past.

The condition of the bodywork is good, we didn't observe any areas of corrosion and the car has a clean MOT record for over 15 years viewable online. The car is kept in dry storage, which helps to explain the condition we see it in. The panel gaps and shut-lines are good, what you'd expect from a car of this era given the mileage. View the photo gallery to see the detail.

Paint

Finished in "Alpine White" with matching convertible roof and wheels, this example also benefits from body coloured bumpers and wheel arches too, a look that many Mk1 enthusiasts like.

The finish of the paint across the car is good, even in colour from our observation, and a decent lustre across all the panels too. Take a look at the video review to see the paint from different angles to better help asses the condition.

Glass and Trim

Fitted with a white convertible roof, this item is a replacement fitted at some point in the past. The windows all look in good condition, clear and free from any fogging. The car is fitted with body coloured bumpers and arches, again all look good along with the trim/badging that looks in line with the cars age.

Interior

A monochrome affair to match the exterior of this car, retro 80s white cloth interior and black trim.

Seats and Carpets

Finished with cloth inners and faux leather outers, the seats on this example are in white to match the exterior. The front seats are a bit tatty to use Deans description, and so have protective covers in black installed. The rear seats look in line with the age of the car, the passenger side cloth coming away from the faux leather on a couple of points.

The carpets in black are hardwearing items and look smart. There are GTi over-mats fitted too to help keep wear down. View the picture gallery to see the detail.

Dashboard

A simple and functional dash wrapped in black vinyl. The top looks great, with no warping or cracks visible on our visit. The car has had a clock change, the current clock showing ~19,000, a calculated total of ~89,000 on this car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic VW steering wheel, it presents in good condition in line with the mileage and age of the car. The gear stick is fitted with a VW badged selector, likely an aftermarket item. View the interior photo gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

The 1.8L four-cylinder fuel injected engine ensured the little Golf was a spritely little runner.

Engine and Gearbox

A recent service has been actioned on this car, including cambelt change and a new battery, ensuring this little 4 pot is in fine fettle. Watch the video to see it kick into action, and Dean take us on a quick run in the car going through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

These cars have a lively nature to them, yet the chassis set up is definitely forgiving for the UK roads. On our quick run in the car, we didn't hear any loud suspension knocks or brake squeals etc, a clean MOT history also backs up the condition we observed.

The Drive

This convertible Mk1 GTi is all about driving in the summer months, and what a great time for it to come on the market! A perky 1.8L 4 cylinder delivers ample power for what is quite a diminutive package. View the video review to see the car in action near the storage location.

Electrics and Other

This car has been fitted with an immobiliser to help reduce insurance costs. Over and about that addition, it is a stock set-up, with a more modern stereo unit fitted.

History and Paperwork

A classic white on white Mk1 GTi cabriolet, tons of provenance from this car that is coming to market from ~31 years ownership, and a cambelt change this year to boot.

Take a look through the extensive paperwork that covers the current family ownership of ~31 years. Dean has had the car serviced along with a cambelt change, new battery, 4 new tyres and refurbished all 5 wheels. Coming from a family of car enthusiasts, the car has been dry stored over this time which helps explain the condition given the age and mileage. Take a look through all the paperwork to see the provenance on this cracking GTi.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Kev, to answer the question with regards the advertising, we run across a number of platforms with details that the car is live on auction with us.
