Introduction

Karl Jones
Content Editor

Engineered for driving enjoyment, this MK1 cabriolet is a great example of classic '80s Golf styling.

The Golf is unsurpassed as one of Volkswagen’s best selling car models and still holds a place as one of the world’s best selling cars of all time. Built by Karmann under instruction from VW, the cabriolet, drop top variant of the Golf, is a fine example of vehicle engineering adding in a reinforced body, roll over bar and additional levels of trim.

Driving enjoyment has been key to Volkswagen’s heritage throughout the years and with such memorable looks it’s easy to see why the Golf still remains such a firm favourite for casual motorists and enthusiasts alike.

With its sculpted, modern lines this 1989 MK1 Golf just screams '80s style, boasting boxy angles and angular looks. This classic three door hatchback, four seater Golf packs a 1.8l petrol engined motor finished in Alpine White with a blue colour contrasting fold-down roof.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Pauline the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Sportline body styling in Alpine White finished with a colour contrasting blue roof really sets this car apart from the crowd.

This Golf GTi Cabriolet comes as a result of an estate sale that Pauline is Power of Attorney for that was granted in April this year.

Pauline tells us the original owner, Victor, that sadly passed in September 2021 had that car for around twenty years.

Pauline tells us that since Power of Attorney was granted she's been getting the car ready for sale and had a fresh MOT completed. Pauline said the keys were not found for the car and so forced entry was made (you'll see this above the driver's door handle), and subsequently the steering column key assembly was taken out and sent away to get a replacement key. This was done and a new key was made. However, since that was actioned the original keys were found and are now included in the sale. The steering column cowl will be replaced prior to sale and the black plastic surround will be replaced around the door handle.

We have seen copies of the V5, Death Certificate and Power of Attorney authorisation for Pauline.

Pauline, will be happy to answer any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The sculpted lines and angular panels of this Golf GTi showcase all those great design elements that this car is renowned for.

Wheels and Tyres

The BBS alloy wheels were in good overall condition on our visit with centre caps showing some signs of ageing. The tyres show a mix of tyre brands including winter type tyres to the front. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of these.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears to be in a good condition with the panel gaps and shut lines looking to align really well and no obvious dings or dents were observed.

Rear wings are in good overall condition and trim and wheel arches fit nicely. Side paneling and trims are in good condition and show a nice ‘Sportline’ graphic, however, this is not an original Sportline edition.

As mentioned, due to the process surrounding an ongoing estate sale the original car key was unfortunately lost, because of this, the driver's side door handle surround had been removed to allow initial access. Pauline has informed us that she is in the process of having this fixed ready for the future owner.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an Alpine White with red and black trim, the exterior of the car really stands out nicely. Marks can be seen on the original paintwork and there are stone chips on the bonnet with some signs of scuff marks on the bumpers.

We have highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution image gallery, please take a look through the images for a detailed look at what’s on offer and assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks good across the car with corresponding vehicle registration etching noted. We didn't notice any chips, cracks or discoloration to the glass on our visit.

The window seals looked good and in line with the condition of the car. On the cabriolet roof we noticed no rips or tears on our visit but did note white markings towards the back which may require some attention to rectify.

Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Interior

Modern levels of everyday usability - built for driving comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The carpets look in great condition and have benefited from having mats fitted over the top. The cloth covered driver's seat has slight evidence of damage to the piping and a tear on the bolster support area from usage. The rear cloth seats showed a slight tear but otherwise in line with the overall condition of the car.

Dashboard

We noted the cubbyhole box had a broken hinge but opened and closed as it should. You may have seen through the gallery images that this car is missing its steering column cowling. Because of the current estate sales process, the original key for the car was unfortunately lost and therefore the ignition lock was sent away for repair and to have a new key cut.

Pauline lets us know that she is currently having the cowling re-installed as part of the final sale.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

On our visit we found the black plastic dash as a whole to be satisfactory with the top of the dash showing no evidence of cracking and in good condition. The characteristic 5 speed golf ball gear knob was consistent with the overall presentation of the cabin.

Mechanics

A truly enjoyable cabriolet that you’ll want to use every day, not just when the sun shines.

Engine and Gearbox

On our visit the car was ready to drive and running as it should from a cold start. Whilst visiting the vehicle, we observed no leaks from the car itself. Please watch our ‘On the road’ video to see the car on its drive out with us.

Suspension and Brakes

There are minor advisories on the last MOT certificate for the shock absorbers. The underside of the car looked to be in line with the condition of the rest of the car. Pauline reports that the suspension set up is a comfortable and enjoyable experience with the kind of stopping power from the brakes that you would expect.

The Drive

The car goes through the gears nicely and drives as you would expect. With the cabriolet, you have the option to fold down the roof to suit the elements when you drive. Please watch the mechanical video to see the car start from cold and out on a short drive.

Electrics and Other

To Pauline’s knowledge, the Pioneer stereo, car electrics and speedometer were working as they should.

History and Paperwork

A super low reserve has been set that will allow the new owner to bring the level of the car up.

Looking over the paperwork that Pauline has supplied to us we can see that the last MOT was completed in June 2022 with a few advisories centred around the shock absorbers of the car. The current MOT isn't set to expire until May 2023. The MOT test certificate and receipts for replacement of the fuel pump, spark plugs and oil and air filters are available.

Please read the Meet the Owner section to learn more about this estate sale - Pauline will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good evening

Could you help with some questions.

If this is part of an estate who’s name has the car gone into on 25/10/21 as that was the last V5 change according to a history check was on this date.

Is there any paperwork at all with the car? Previous Mot’s services receipts as nothing comes up on any checks which is worrying!

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Gary.
