Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Karmann perfected the Golf Cabriolet so much they didn’t bother with a Mk2 version.

The Golf is unsurpassed as one of Volkswagen’s best-selling car models and still holds a place as one of the world’s best-selling cars of all time. Built by Karmann under instruction from VW, the cabriolet, drop-top variant of the Golf is a fine example of vehicle engineering, adding a reinforced body, roll-over bar and additional levels of trim.

Driving enjoyment has been key to Volkswagen’s heritage throughout the years and, with such memorable looks, it’s easy to see why the Golf still remains such a firm favourite for casual motorists and enthusiasts alike.

This lovely example comes to market more as an end-of-era sale. In ownership for the past five years, the owner tells us it’s time to let someone else have the pleasure of the iconic VW Golf Cabriolet.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

When I was younger, I was never able to afford a Golf, so it was a nice surprise when I had this as a Christmas present in 2021.

Paul was lucky enough to receive the Golf as a Christmas present from his now ex-wife in 2021 - a car he’s always wanted, the Golf has been a pleasure to own, even though he’s not really used the car an enormous amount during his ownership.

The sale is somewhat of a sentimental one, as he feels he should no longer own the car as it was originally a gift; you get the idea.

Paul will be on hand to answer any questions in the comment section below.

Exterior

Perfecting the Mk1 Golf for summer use with the iconic cabriolet model.

Wheels and Tyres

A set of 15-inch, 14-spoke alloy wheels has been fitted; these are finished in white and are in excellent condition.

The tyres are a matching set of Accelera PHI-R tyres, and they are pretty much in as-new condition, even though they are a couple of years old.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork on the cabriolet appears to be in good order, with no dings or dents spotted and equal panel gaps. The factory body kit fits well and doesn’t appear to be distorted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Helios Blue Metallic', the paintwork is well presented with a nice shine that pops in the sunshine. There is the odd age-related chip consistent with the age and mileage, and the rear bumper has some minor marks and crazing to the paint.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition, with only some light age-related marks, as expected for their age.

Fitted with an electric blue fabric roof, this is in excellent condition and working correctly. There is also a tonneau cover in grey to match the interior, which is in good order.

The headlights and rear lights are all in good order, with no damage to the lenses.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Light and airy, the Golf Clipper Cabriolet’s interior is perfect for everyday use or a nice run out at the weekend with the roof down.

Seats and Carpets

The original fabric interior is in excellent condition for the age of the vehicle, with just minor signs of use.

Throughout the car, the carpets are in good order, with no signs of damage or heavy use.

image

Dashboard

The Golf’s dashboard is in good condition and is free from any splits, cracks or noticeable damage.

The instruments look in good order; the odometer shows that ~108,591 miles have been enjoyed in the classic VW.

We did notice on our test drive that the rev counter was not working.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original four-spoke steering wheel is in good condition, with just a light amount of wear as expected.

The automatic gear lever is in good order, as is the surround.

image

Mechanics

A chilled drive with the roof down just got even more relaxing with an automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with a 1.8-litre engine and an automatic gearbox, the Golf starts up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported. A recent service has also been carried out prior to the car going for auction.

The automatic gearbox has smooth gear changes, with no reported problems.

The car is quite comfortable on the road, and it operates correctly, pulling strongly through the gears.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The Golf handles great, just as a Golf of this era should do. No knocks or bangs were heard coming from the suspension when we went out on our test drive.

Before the latest MOT, the brakes were serviced, ensuring everything is working correctly. Perfect for the next custodian, who can jump in and enjoy it.

image

The Drive

And relax!

It’s all about relaxed, open-top motoring with the 1990 Golf Clipper Cabriolet.

The automatic gearbox suits the car’s easy-going nature, allowing you to enjoy the wind in your hair and the classic Volkswagen charm without constantly changing gears. Steering is light, visibility is excellent with the roof down, and while performance is modest by modern standards, the car feels engaging thanks to its compact size, simple controls and unmistakable 1990s character.

image

Electrics and Other

An upgraded JVC head unit has been installed by a previous keeper; this also has Bluetooth to enable hands-free calling.

There is also a boot-mounted subwoofer, improving the sound quality. Paul is also leaving the dash cam in the car, and a bubble cocoon is included with the sale.

Paul told us everything was in working order as far as he is aware.

image

History and Paperwork

Plenty of history, invoices and MOT certificates build up a nice picture for the Golf Cabriolet.

Included with the car are a number of invoices dating from the 1990s and 2000s up to the present day, showing various parts purchased and work carried out over the years. There was also a recent MOT carried out, which is valid until 28.06.2027.

Could this 1990 Golf Clipper Cabriolet come along at any more perfect time? With the recent spell of good weather set to continue, why don’t you enjoy some open-top motoring in one of VW’s finest?

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.
