Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

Designed by Giugiaro, the Mark 1 Golf was a turning point in history for Volkswagen, to this day it's an ever popular classic.

The successor to the Beetle, the MK1 Golf debuted in Europe in May 1947. A shift in VW's cars from the rear-wheel drive, rear-mounted air-cooled engines to front-mounted water-cooled units with front-wheel drive. The cabriolet was given a reinforced body, transverse roll-over bar on later ones like this, and high level of trim. From stamping to final assembly the car was entirely built at the Karmann factory.

This example is a later "Clipper", featuring body coloured bumpers, wider wheel arches and body skirts. This car has been in the careful hands of Andrew for the last 4 years, and it's now ready to be enjoyed in the fairer weather.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Andrew the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

A desirable Mk1 Golf cabriolet, the Clipper variant with colour coded bumpers gives it that little bit of extra appeal.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels all look great on this VW Golf MK1 cabriolet, the car rolls on 13" wheels with all the silver VW wheel covers present.

The rubber also looks great, with a fresh coating of tyre dressing recently applied. The tyres are Michelin Energy which appear to have a good amount of tread on them.

Bodywork

Even though this car was produced in 1990 when the Mk2 had been launched, the cabriolet version was assembled at Karmann and was based on the original Mk1.

The bodywork on this car is in very good condition, with all the panel gaps and shut lines appearing true and flush. The underside is in similar condition and does not show any signs of corrosion. Take a look at the exterior images to see a closer view of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in "Paprika Red", the colour really stands out among other Mk1 Golf's. The paintwork on the car looks excellent, with a deep shine, the lustre is even in colour and finish across all the panels.

There are some very minor stone chips to the front bumper and a very minor scratch on the driver's door which look like a good polish would correct easily. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the paint work.

Glass and Trim

In line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage, very good condition all round.

The glass appears free from any major scratches, chips or cracks, the trim and rubber seals all look great with lots of life left in them. The car features a retractable roof which also presents in good condition. Please view the exterior videos for a close-up review of the details.

Interior

What a lovely place to be, tartan seats, simple controls and dials, not forgetting the roof-down experience too.

Seats and Carpets

The grey cloth seats with tartan pattern look excellent in this example, they've really held their shape and have been kept very clean.

The carpets to are in line with the overall condition of the car, very well kept. Take a look through the extensive media for a close up look.

Dashboard

The dashboard features a boxy '80s design with simple dials that display all the information you'd ever want in this boxy little cabriolet.

Andrew reports all the dials and buttons are fully working as you'd expect. Please take a look at the photos and video for an in-depth tour of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In-line with the rest of the car, in great condition for its age and mileage.

The steering wheel and 5-speed gear selector offer a sporty experience in this little hot hatch.

Mechanics

The nippy 1.8L will take you up to 108MPH, although we think a more leisurely cruise is how most will use this classic.

Engine and Gearbox

The naturally-aspirated 1.8L inline-4 powerplant has Bosch K-Jetronic injectors, and a 0-60 speed of 9.8s.

The engine bay appears clean and no leaks observed on our visit, we captured a cold start video showing the car starting from cold, coming up to temperature, and idling without fault. Please take a look at the paperwork section for a closer look at the previous work carried out.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension and brakes, appear in good condition and always been given attention when required. Andrew reports a good ride in the Golf cabriolet with the suspension and brakes working exactly as they should.

The Drive

Andrew's goto car on a hot summer day, he reports a smooth drive with power there when you require it, a very usable classic with a timeless appeal.

Electrics and Other

Andrew reports no issues with the electrics on the car and mentions everything is working as you'd expect. Please take a look at the exterior, interior, and mechanical photographs along with the videos to fully appreciate this late highly original MK1 cabriolet.

History and Paperwork

A timeless classic that is extremely collectible and usable, UK RHD registered in 'Paprika Red' we couldn't imagine a better car to spend the summer in.

The car has been owned by Andrew for the previous 4 years and has 7 previous owners, all of which have really cared for this Mk1 Golf. The last 5 services show main dealer VW stamps up until 21.02.2014.
