Introduction

Kulraj Singh Salh
COO

The GTi is a car that needs no introduction, the Mk1 really propelled the "hot-hatch" class in to the limelight.

VW engineer Alfons Lowenberg gathered together a group of like-minded colleagues willing to work in their spare time on a new project known as the 'Sport Golf'. When it was complete, VW executives were so impressed they gave it the green-light and it was unveiled to the world at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show as the Golf GTi (Gran Turismo Injection).

Later Mk1's like this one featured a 1.8L engine with five-speed gearboxes that helped improve the 0-60 speed to ~8 seconds. This example is a "Sportline", the special edition run-out Mk1 with only ~499 produced and put together at the Karmann factory. The car features body-coloured bumpers, special painted BBS wheels and cloth Recaro seats. A 2 lady owner car, now coming out of ~27 years of loving ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Carole the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I used to use this car to take my grandson to nursery when he was younger.

Carole has loved and treasured this Golf GTi Sportline for the past 27 years, and the car has only had one other lady owner during its life.

The car is an all original example, garaged all its life and just serviced when need. Carole will be sad to see the car go after many years of ownership, as she's using the car less and less, it's time to find a new owner. Carole will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

GET YOUR VALUATION

Exterior

BBS alloys, body-coloured bumpers and sporty decals, the Sportline is unmistakable for those in the know.

Wheels and Tyres

Featuring custom painted BBS alloys, these sporty wheels really make the car pop and give it a sporty stance.

The Firestone tyres look in great condition with plenty of tread left for the new owner, recent additions. We only noticed some very minor curb rash on the wheels. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look.

Bodywork

Even though these cars were produced in 1992 when the Mk2 had been launched, the cabriolet version was assembled at Karmann and was based on the original Mk1.

The bodywork on this car is in excellent condition, it features its original roof and does not show any signs of corrosion as it has been garaged all its life. The underside is in similar condition, little to quibble about. Take a look at the exterior images to see a closer view of the bodywork.

Paint

Finished in "Flash Red", a colour that really stands out amongst the GTi line-up.

Carole has never had the car painted in her ownership, and with the original owner having it for just 2 years, we think it's unlikely the car has ever been resprayed. As a result, the paint is even in finish and colour across all panels, and could be further improved with a machine polish to remove swirl marks that have developed over time.

Over time, the car has picked up some nicks and scratches on the bodywork, as you'll observe in the images and videos. Most notably the front near-side of the bumper, and some marks on the rear of the car. In addition to this the original owner is said to have worn high heels in her ownership, and has scuffed the kick-plate on the drivers side quite considerably!

Glass and Trim

In-line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage, very good condition all round.

The glass is free from any major scratches, chips or cracks, the trim and rubber seals all look great with lots of life left in them. The condition of the original roof is quite something, a testament to the warm dry garage the car has been stored in for the past 27 years.

View the exterior videos for a close-up review of the details.

Interior

The sporty touches continue with the black and red Jacquard pattern cloth Recaro sports seats and styled buttons and gauges.

Seats and Carpets

The black cloth Recaro seats look great and have retained their shape and comfort all these years on. Deep bolsters will hold you in place as you pace around tight corners.

We noticed some very faint spill marks on the seat bottoms which we think would come out with a deep valet, otherwise excellent condition, ready to be enjoyed.

Dashboard

The dashboard is a hangover from the '80s, square and boxy, just what we like to see.

Carole reports all the dials and buttons are fully working as you'd expect. Please take a look at the photos and video for an in-depth tour of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

In-line with the rest of the car, in great condition for its age and mileage. Using both remind you you're not in any old Golf, you're in the GTi.

Mechanics

The car that really got people talking about hot-hatches, the GTi.

Engine and Gearbox

The beating heart of this Sportline is the 1.8L GTi DX 1,781cc petrol engine coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox. This gives you ~110BHP to tap into and being naturally-aspirated, it sure sounds the part too.

Carole reports that the car has always been given the attention it deserves with yearly MOT's and regular servicing. Please take a look at the paperwork section for a closer look at the work carried out.

Suspension and Brakes

Likewise with the suspension and brakes, in great original condition and always been given attention when required. The GTi featured stiffer suspension with MacPherson struts and lower A-arms in the front and a semi-independent torsion beam axle can be found in the rear.

Carole reports a great ride with the suspension and brakes working exactly as they should.

The Drive

Effortless performance from the GTi. A delight to drive in '92 and still on the roads today.

The engine, suspension, the gearbox was all adjusted and changed in the GTi variants for a performance-focused, refined car.

Electrics and Other

Carole reports no issues with the electrics on the car and mentions everything is working as you'd expect.

Please take a look at the interior, exterior, and mechanical photographs along with the videos to fully appreciate this rare Sportline variant.

History and Paperwork

1 of ~499 models ever produced and assembled by Karmann makes this a very desirable MK1 Golf GTi.

A two owner car from new, coming out of ~27 year careful ownership, a rare thing for these Golf GTi's, both owners from the Cotswold area too. It's been well used, but also correctly stored and maintained which is why the car still turns heads today.

Carole has just had the car serviced (24/02/2021) along with a fresh MOT. In 2015 the fuel pump was replaced by Cotswold Classic Car Restorations.

We've actioned checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi Clear.

I realise the photographs illustrate all the receipts you have left for the vehicle but I wandered if you have the original logbook/service book for the car?

Apologies – you responded to say that there is no service history before the 70K – is there any paperwork e.g MOT certificates etc or has the paperwork just been lost ?

Thank you for your email.
I have given to Trade Classics all the paperwork I have which they photographed.
Some time ago I decided to tidy up and reduce my files at that time I must of thrown out early paperwork. I had no dea at the time it might be useful if we decided to sell the car which at the time I had no intention of doing so.
