Introduced in 1988, the Volkswagen Corrado was developed as a more sporting and driver-focused alternative to the company’s established Scirocco. Built by Volkswagen’s performance-oriented Karmann division, the Corrado combined distinctive coupe styling with sophisticated engineering and a more focused driving character, quickly earning a strong reputation among enthusiasts.

The VR6-powered Corrado arrived in 1991, bringing Volkswagen’s innovative narrow-angle six-cylinder engine to the model. With its compact layout allowing six cylinders to be packaged into a relatively small engine bay, the VR6 delivered a distinctive soundtrack and smooth, muscular performance. Combined with the Corrado’s sharp handling, compact dimensions and unmistakable styling, the VR6 became the flagship of the range and remains one of Volkswagen’s most celebrated performance cars.

Today, the Corrado VR6 has become an increasingly appreciated modern classic, particularly as examples with genuine long-term ownership and a well-documented history become harder to find. Meet the owner

A much-loved family car with over two decades of ownership, enjoyed first by Steve’s father and then cherished by Steve for the past ~4.5 years.

Steve’s late father purchased this Corrado VR6 in 2001, when it had covered just ~69,000 miles. He enjoyed the car throughout his ownership, keeping it within the family for many years and forming a strong connection with this distinctive Volkswagen. Steve remembers joining his dad in the passenger seat during the annual North Devon Sports and Classic Car Run, which his dad took part in every year between 2006 and 2015.

Steve took over ownership almost ~4.5 years ago and has continued to care for and enjoy the Corrado, meaning the car has now been within the same family for around ~25 years. Its long-term family ownership forms an important part of the car’s story, with Steve now making the decision to bring it to auction with us.

Steve reports that his dad took great care of the car, with himself and his friends often carrying out servicing and maintenance in their spare time.

Exterior

Distinctive 1990s coupé styling, combining sharp lines, muscular proportions, and the unmistakable character of the Corrado VR6.

Wheels and Tyres

This example sits on its original-style 15-inch Speedline wheels with centre hub caps, complementing the period appearance of the Volkswagen. The wheels would benefit from a refurbishment, with some peeling and bubbling to the paintwork in a few areas.

The car is fitted with Dunlop Sport 01 tyres, which appear to be in good condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork appears to be in great overall original condition, with the panel gaps aligning visually well around the car.

As to be expected, there are some minor age-related marks to note, including small stone chips to the front of the car, a scratch on the nearside front arch, and a scuff/area of touch-up paint to the offside rear lower bumper.

Paint

Finished in gloss black, the paintwork presents in good condition, with even colour and coverage across all panels. We did notice a small area of touch-up paint on the front bumper, along with some additional areas of stone chipping.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition for the car’s age - during our visit we didn’t notice any obvious cracks or discolouration.

The window seals appear good and consistent with the overall condition of the car.

The door handles and window surrounds also present well.

Interior

A driver-focused 1990s cabin, blending supportive sports seats, quality materials, and classic Volkswagen design.

Seats and Carpets

The black patterned cloth seats have retained their shape well over the years, with only very light creasing visible. The dashboard is finished in black, complemented by matching carpets and door cards. We did notice a very small tear in the drivers seat.

The door cards and carpets present similarly, showing a consistent level of condition throughout the interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this Corrado shows no major damage or scuffs during our visit.

The odometer displayed ~78,495 miles at the time of consignment.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black VW steering wheel was in good condition on our visit.

The black gear selector also looked in fair to good shape too, with some wear due to use.

Engine and Gearbox

The Corrado VR6 is powered by Volkswagen’s charismatic 2.9-litre VR6 engine, delivering smooth six-cylinder performance and the distinctive soundtrack that has become such an important part of the model’s appeal. This is paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, giving the Corrado an engaging and characterful driving experience.

Suspension and Brakes

The Corrado’s suspension and braking systems remain well suited to its compact, sporting character, giving the car a confident stance on the road and plenty of driver engagement.

The Drive

The VR6 engine gives the Corrado a distinctive character on the road, combining smooth six-cylinder power with a wonderfully recognisable soundtrack. The compact coupé dimensions and front-wheel-drive layout make it an enjoyable car to drive, while the five-speed manual gearbox adds to the sense of involvement.

Steve has continued to enjoy the Corrado during his ownership, appreciating its combination of performance, practicality, and distinctive 1990s character.

Steve reports that everything is functional and operational, aligning with the overall condition of the car. He did mention that the aftermarket multi-CD player fitted in the boot is no longer working.

    Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

    Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

    Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
