Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Arriving to the market in 1988 as an upmarket alternative to the Scirocco - the VR6 puts out 187bhp.

The Corrado first launched in the late ‘80s positioned above the Scirocco II. The new sports car boasts a thrilling automatically extending spoiler when you reach speeds above 120kph. The VR6 unit can propel the Corrado to 62mph in 6.7 seconds, very rapid for 1995 indeed. The car borrowed major suspension components from the MK3 golf, and was built by Karmann in its Osnabruck plant, whereupon release became an instant hit with the motoring press.

Steve has always dreamed of owning the Corrado since launch and has always been a fellow VW fan. Once the opportunity arose around two years ago, he jumped at the chance when he came across this very attractive black example. He mentions that this Corrado gets so much attention for its rarity nowadays, especially in the sought-after VR6 guise.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I owned a MK2 Scirocco when the Corrado launched, it's always been a dream car of mine.

During the '80s Steve had a Mk2 Scirocco, which he loved, however when VW released the Corrado in '88 it was the natural successor to the Scirocco, and Steve always fanced a new one but at the time couldn't afford the car or its insurance. Years later the desire to own one has not diminished, so after searching high and low he found his ideal Corrado, finished in black and in an unmolested condition, with great amount of history from its previous owner who had owned the car for the previous 18 years.

Steve has spent almost £3,000 in the last 2 years in parts and labour, trying to keep to OEM spec as much as possible. He's had the following work carried out: braking system overhauled, all new discs, pads and callipers front and rear, rear calliper carriers and brake hoses, rear wheel bearings, ABS rings, handbrake cable, brake fluid, ABS pump, ECU and brake master cylinder refurb.

All new suspension springs, rubber mounts, shocks, control arms, bushes, stabiliser links and 4x new tyres fitted in January. The car has also recently been professionally treated with Dinitrol and Waxoyl.

Steve reports the car sits on Eibach suspension springs, with the original springs supplied within the sale - VW golf MK4 rear brake callipers have also been fitted, a common and favourable modification on the Corrado.

Steve now has a single garage and requires a more practical car to ferry his children around in, so he has decided to part with his beloved Collardo. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Featuring origami creases and sharp lines with this three-door hatchback design, the VR6 graces the street with its style and stance.

Wheels and Tyres

Equipped with 5-spoke star-shaped wheels on this iconic classic, the Speedline alloys look to be in good condition with just a few very minor marks. The Toyo Proxes tyres are all matching with a good amount of tread remaining, they were replaced in January and all dated 2021.

View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

In compact 2+2 three door form with a sunroof. The panel fit of the doors etc looks to be as good for an '90s sports car like this, even in terms of fitment and easy to open and close.

There appears to be no obvious dings looking down the sides of the VR6. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in an attractive black paint which looks great, an elegant and timeless choice that pairs well with the interior. Overall the paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels.

We did notice some common stone chips and a small dent on the bonnet, in line with the age and mileage of the car.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears In line with the rest of the car for its age and mileage - it all looks great without any cracks, chips, or marks to note.

The trim looks great too. Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

Compared to Ford or Vauxhalls from the same era, the cabin space is in a league of its own - engineering at its finest.

Seats and Carpets

Black cloth seats with purple patterning line the interior of this car. The seats look great for their age, free from any major signs of wear and in good condition.

A similar story is told for the rear seats, carpets, headlining and door cards; one very well looked after example.

Please take a look at the interior photos and videos for a closer look.

Dashboard

As with the rest of the car, a very nice and highly original example. A clean and smart 90s dash and instrument cluster, all the numbers are clean, clear and legible, along with the digital displays.

The dashboard is free from cracks or tears - please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail. The odometer showed a mileage of ~129,810 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic VW 3-spoke steering wheel and manual gear selector. Both items appear in great condition within this ergonomic cabin; again take a look at photos and videos for a closer look at the condition of the interior.

Mechanics

V-Reihenmotor power - displacing 2861cc with a narrower layout, an ingenious and creative engineering solution to fit a V6 into the Golf floor pan.

Engine and Gearbox

The VR6 engine provided a compromise between both V-shaped and straight engines by placing the two cylinder banks at an angle of 15°, with a single cylinder head.

This design allowed engineers to fit a six-cylinder engine into almost the same space previously occupied by four-cylinder engines.

Steve reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth gearbox powering the front wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has received a lot of work to the suspension and brakes over Steve's ownership. As mentioned, the following work includes; braking system overhauled, all new discs, pads and callipers front and rear, rear calliper carriers and brake hoses, rear wheel bearings, ABS rings, handbrake cable, brake fluid, ABS pump, ECU and brake master cylinder refurb.

All new suspension springs, rubber mounts, shocks, control arms, bushes, and stabiliser links.

The Drive

Back in '95 the Corrado could hold its own against the Porsche 968 ClubSport and Ford Escort RS Cosworth.

The delivery of the smooth power and VR6 soundtrack is intoxicating, as the VR6 hardly breaks a sweat getting up to speed.

Electrics and Other

Steve reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge, including the electrically operated sunroof.

History and Paperwork

A highly sought after VR6 Corrado, the enthusiasm for this car has never been higher, bid while you can.

The car comes with extensive service history - 20 entries in the service book, with the latest entire 700 miles ago. Since then it's had a fuel filter change and fresh brake fluid.

Steve purchased the car from a previous owner who had the car for 18 years before and mentions as far as he's aware the car has always been in a garage, spending the last 2 years in a heated garage. Take a look at the detailed service history in the media pack below.

Steve will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.
