One of the most underrated hot hatches to come out of the 90s, the V6 powered Golf.

Produced from 1991 to 1997 this is the Mk3 generation Golf which replaced the GTi G60. With ~172BHP to tap into the VR6 is not slow either. The car is powered by the naturally aspirated 2.8L 12V narrow angle V6, and mated to the four-speed automatic gearbox.

This late Mk3 Golf VR6 comes fully spec'd with lots of additional extras, and with only ~77,000 miles on the clock. Finished in "Candy White", it's coming to market from ~6 years ownership. This car has a lot of originality, a great specification and high-performance engine.

Meet the owner

This VR6 was an ideal choice for me, ample power when you want to have a bit of fun and yet very comfortable about town.

Simon has owned this Golf for ~6 years, it was the perfect car for him. After a motorbike accident, Simon was no longer able to drive manual cars and this auto VR6 was recommended to him.. The previous owner was the workshop manager for Wick autos VW dealership in Chichester and he had known the car from new.

Simon loves how unmolested and original the car was, he bought the car blind, the recommendation coming over the phone, being out of the country at the time. The car has a great spec, with all the optional extras of the Highline model. With a move abroad to Spain on the cards, the VR6 comes to auction and Simon will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comment below.

Finished in an all white colourway, this era of Golf was quite a modest, under the radar design.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15-inch alloy wheels look in fair condition, but would benefit from a refurb, some corrosion under the silver paint visible.

The tyres were recently replaced and all dated 2020, each tyre shows a good amount of tread left for the new owner.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks in good condition, shut-lines and panel gaps all looking good and doors opening and closing with a familiar clunk you'd expect. Just a few minor areas which would benefit from a little attention, the bottom of the front wings where they meet the sills.

Paint

The deep "Candy White" paintwork on this car looks great. The paintwork has good lustre and it is even in colour and finish across the car, just some minor swirls - there are some areas of the car which have had paint in the past.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage. We didn't notice any discolouration, just one small chip in the windscreen. The window seals look good too and are in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

One thing to note, the rear spoiler does show sign of discolouration as pictured. The car is fitted with an electric tilting and sliding glass sunroof with sunscreen/sunblind from the factory which is fully operational.

Interior

Deep bolstered leather seats keep you pinned back while you tackle corners in this pocket rocket.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather sports seats with integrated storage compartments were an optional extra from the factory. They are very comfortable and provide ample support for longer drives. We did notice some light creasing in line with the age mileage of the car, no major defects though.

The carpets and door cards tell a similar story in great condition throughout. Please view the video review to see the cabin in full.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console present in great working order for its age and mileage. The switchgear presents in good condition with no reported issues from Simon.

The dials are legible with no glass or binnacle damage, with the odometer showing ~77,775 on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Equipped with a four spoke VW steering wheel, with both the steering wheel and automatic gear stick appearing to be in great condition, ready to be enjoyed this summer.

Mechanics

The six-cylinder VR6 won back old customers and uplifted the Golf sales, ~172BHP is not to be sniffed at.

Engine and Gearbox

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view around the engine bay.

On our visit, the car went through the gears with no issues, both on the road and when manoeuvring on the shoot. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the clean engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Simon reports the suspension setup is very comfortable while offering great performance in the corners. He mentions the car has always been mechanically looked after, which is evident from the paperwork.

Simon also mentions the brakes and suspension provide an enjoyable journey with the kind of stopping power you'd expect. The front discs were recently replaced, and new rear discs which haven't been fitted are supplied with the sale.

The Drive

The VR6 offers more than enough poke for a hatchback, with the modest styling, it can be considered a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Electrics and Other

Simon has reported that the electrical system is in line with the rest of the condition of the car, i.e. in full working order to his knowledge.
