Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

A lively hot hatch that packs sharp handling and real attitude into a compact, everyday package - small in size, but big on fun.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI marks one of the early chapters in Volkswagen’s hot hatch evolution, taking the everyday practicality of the Polo and injecting it with a sharper, more spirited edge.

Compact in size but lively in character, it offered drivers a lightweight chassis, responsive handling, and a rev-happy engine that made it feel far more playful than its modest footprint might suggest.

Positioned as a junior performance model, it carried the GTI badge with intent rather than gimmick, delivering a driving experience that balanced usability with genuine back-road fun. It’s a car that quietly set the tone for later generations of the Polo GTI, establishing the formula of compact performance done the Volkswagen way.

Coming to market after almost 2 years with our vendor, who won our auction, this rare example presents in great condition overall and where stepping inside is almost like getting into a new car. Well set with recent servicing, largely original in its setup and great features such as the sunroof and air conditioning, this one is well worth a closer look at with future investment potential written all over it.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having been a big fan of performance VW’s, the limited-run Polo GTI was always on my list to own.

We met with the current owner, Kevin, who explained that this Polo GTI has been far more than just another performance hatch, "I've always wanted one of these, it has been a long-awaited addition to the collection!".

Having owned a number of performance cars, Kevin had always been aware of the Polo GTI, and when this example came along, its low mileage and exceptional condition made it an easy decision to purchase.

Kevin lets us know more about his time with the VW, "I couldn’t quite get round to buying one when they were first out, I'm glad I got this one as it feels like something really special, and almost untouched by time".

Having enjoyed the car during his ownership, but with less time on his hands to enjoy it, Kevin has now taken the decision to let it move on.

Kevin tells us the car will be collected from Billericay for convenience, as Dunmow is remote.

Kevin will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its subtle sporty styling and purposeful stance, it doesn’t shout for attention, but it doesn’t need to.

Wheels and Tyres

This GTI is fitted with 15" BBS multi-spoke alloy wheels with VW centre emblems. All appeared to be in great condition, and we noted no real concerns with them, just a clean over would improve the looks.

The front and rear of the Polo is fitted with Michelin tyres and a spec of 195/45 dated 2001, and are likely original.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Polo showed in lovely overall condition.

Looking over the exterior, the panel lines looking straight and well-aligned.

We didn't really spot any areas of the main body that posed a concern: overall the VW was in great shape.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The silver paint coverage is even across the car with no noted imperfections to colour.

We didn't note any major concerns with the paint, only a slight scratch on the bonnet and a minor scuff to the rear driver side bumper. Overall though, it was clear the car had been respected and looked after, especially considering its low mileage.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen, side windows, front and rear lights all appear in great condition, and we could see no signs of concerning scratches on the glass.

VW and GTI badges are present and look smart.

The interior cabin trim sections showed smartly and we noted no issues with the headlining.

In the cabin, the door cards presented equally well.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

image

Interior

A compact cabin with sporty touches and tight ergonomics gives it that classic hot hatch feel.

Seats and Carpets

The seats looked very presentable and we barely found any issues with them - the '1' branding added an extra sporty touch here. Both front and rear seats showed limited use, displaying well.

Red trimmed carpets show in lovely condition, we had no concerns to this section too.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The black dash across the centre console appears in really smart shape.

Simple but efficient, the double dials and clock were all functioning as expected with no issues. The odometer showed ~3,369 miles at the time of our visit, Kevin tells us the mileage may increase slightly over the next couple of weeks as it is used sparingly.

The switches and controls all appear to be in nice condition, with surfaces free from fogging.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the gauges were all functioning without concern when starting up the car.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Equipped with a sporty VW leather trimmed wheel with red stitching, we found no issues to report.

The cleanly-designed gear stick with matching stitching looks to be in great condition, with no wear that stood out.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

image

Mechanics

The lively engine responds quickly, giving the Polo a punchy edge that turns everyday drives into something far more engaging.

Engine and Gearbox

We noted no trouble starting the car and out on the road, the Polo also performed without issue when running and driving.

The car idled smoothly and showed no issues. Its engine was easily capable of getting up to speed in no time at all and offered a decent amount of performance when needed.

We took the car out around some local roads to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting up and more detail in the engine bay.

image

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs, or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns over its performance or handling.

Looking over the underside of the car during our visit, we noted no issues and the car felt solid on the road.

The brakes had no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey. These brought the car to a stop without a problem, and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

image

The Drive

On the road, the Polo GTI feels light on its feet and eager to respond, with a chassis tuned to prioritise agility over outright power.

The steering is direct enough to inspire confidence on twisty B-roads, while the compact dimensions make it feel especially at home in tight, urban environments.

Under the bonnet, its naturally spirited engine gives it enough punch to keep the drive entertaining, encouraging you to work through the rev range rather than rely on brute force.

image

Electrics and Other

The VW features a fully functioning sunroof, air conditioning and a cassette player in the centre console. A spare wheel and toolkit are located in the boot.

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good overall condition.

We weren't able to fully test all of the functions when visiting the car, although Kevin told us everything was in working order.

History and Paperwork

Low mileage, rare example, excellent condition and recent servicing - what more could you need from this lovely GTI.

The car has had no major work carried out, and Kevin, the current owner, believes the car has been dry stored for much of its life, held as part of a private collection. Its low mileage is supported by the MOT history, as well as the overall visible condition of the vehicle. A really stunning example.

Due to its limited use and storage, it hasn't needed much in the way of servicing in recent years, however, over ~£1,000 has recently been spent on bringing it back into active use. This included a full service and inspection by a local Volkswagen Audi specialist, along with a new battery and tensioner belt.

Importantly, the VW remains largely factory standard with no modifications, and even retains what are believed to be the original tyres. A key appeal of the car is its originality, having remained exactly as it left the showroom in 2001. The Polo has recently had an MOT completed with no advisories shown.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
