Stunning Polo GTI with amazingly low mileage – we doubt there’s a better one out there!

There can be few motoring enthusiasts unfamiliar with the VW GTI badge. Building on the well-established reputation of its well-loved Golf stablemate, the Polo GTI is a genuine hot hatch – light, nimble and quick with a factory specified top end of ~127MPH and 0-60 in a very respectable 8.7 seconds. This particular model was produced for only 2 years between 2000 and 2001 and is becoming increasingly sought after as a result. These cars are everything you would expect from VW – well engineered, refined, nicely equipped, great to look at and huge fun to drive.

This incredibly low mileage Polo GTI comes to auction from ~6.5 years ownership and is in amazing condition inside and out. We’re usually cautious about describing cars as immaculate but, it has to be said, this comes pretty close. In this condition and with this mileage – this was a car I had to own.

Andrew is a huge fan of VW’s having owned a few over the years. But this Polo was a very special car. He tells us “I couldn’t believe the condition and the mileage; I was like it had just been driven off the forecourt of a main dealer in 2001”.

He goes on to say “I decided to keep the mileage as low as I could, and I concentrated on ensuring it was impeccably maintained. It’s a real wrench to see it go but I simply don’t use it enough to justify keeping it. Would be lovely to see it in the hands of an enthusiastic owner who cherishes it as much as I have". Presented in stunning condition, some subtle touches giveaway the GTI lineage.

Wheels and Tyres

Set against the red painted brake calipers, the 15” BBS alloys and VW centre caps appear in excellent condition, and we could find no evidence of curbing or other damage.

The wheels are shod with Michelin 195/45 R15 Pilot SX tyres all round which look in good condition and appear to have good tread remaining. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

Standing straight with good panel gaps, this lovely GTI presents beautifully. All four doors open and close properly with the legendary, reassuring “clunk” for which VW have become famous. Bonnet, sunroof and tailgate open and close with precision too – exactly what you would expect from VW engineering.

Paint

The silver paintwork is in great condition all round, right down to the body colour inner rear wheel arches. The finish is consistent right across the car with a deep, even shine and we could see few flaws beyond a very minor mark on the nearside front valance.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, tailgate and side window glass all appears clear and free from scratches. Likewise, lights, mirrors and lenses all look clear and without cracks or damage. Trim, black painted grill and front fog light surrounds together with GTI badging all present very well.

Interior

Sporty, stylish and very noughties – the interior is well appointed and in amazing condition.

Seats and Carpets

The black and red cloth seats look in really good condition with barely any signs of wear. Even the driver’s seat bolster looks great, and all stitching appears intact, just what you'd expect from a low mileage car like this.

Similarly, the black carpets, floor mats and headlining are in very good shape. Flick through the image gallery to see for yourself.

Dashboard

Dials and gauges are clear with no signs of cracks, damage or misting. Silver bezels are in very good condition and all markings are bright and legible. Buttons and switches all look sound and show no obvious signs of wear that we could see.

Likewise, the rest of the interior trim looks great with only a very light scratch to the passenger door pocket. Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you see the quality of this interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather covered steering wheel with VW branded centre boss presents very well and appears free from significant wear. Leather is unmarked and red stitching is in highly sound condition.

The VW branded silver and black gear knob and leather gaiter all look very good with no signs of wear that we could see.

Mechanics

Sprightly and eager, the DOHC 4 pot delivers a factory specified ~127MPH top speed.

Engine and Gearbox

Amazing! The beautifully presented engine bay is very clean, and we could see no evidence of leaks or damage. The 1.6L, 4-cylinder engine sits neatly in the engine bay set off perfectly by the chrome badging and bright red HT leads.

Coupled to a five-speed gearbox this neat package is capable of delivering ~123BHP to the front wheels giving a very creditable, factory specified 0-60 of 8.7 seconds. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

VW engineered brakes with 10-inch discs upfront and 8.9-inch on the rear, ABS and traction control you can be assured this GTI stops as well as it goes. Independent McPherson strut suspension ensures a compliant yet sporty ride.

The Drive

We were unable to take a test drive in the car for insurance reasons. However, you can see the car driven briefly in the on the road video and Andrew assures us this Polo drives exactly as it should.

Electrics and Other

This GTI is well equipped including electrically operated front windows, heated door mirrors and fog lights. The car also comes with a factory fitted audio system including a 6 CD autochanger. All switchgear looks in great condition and Andrew confirms everything works exactly as it should.

Coming to market from ~6.5 year ownership, this car has collector miles of just ~3,200 and condition to match too, if you're in the market for one of these then this one deserves a good look.

Only produced for 2 years, these early noughties Polo GTI’s are getting hard to find. There can be few around in this condition and with this kind of mileage. This car has covered just over 450 miles in the last 10 years!

With its existing owner for ~6.5 years, the car comes with original wallet, handbook, manual and radio manual, spare Gates belts and tensioners and current owner’s sales receipt.
