As a performance coupe, the VW Scirocco R offers both thrilling speed and superb daily drivability.

Volkswagen has a history of turning its cars into legends, a tradition honoured by the Beetle, Transporter, and Golf. The return of the Scirocco after a 16-year hiatus successfully revived the sporting coupe segment with authentic flair. With its five-star safety rating, distinctive fastback profile, and muscular stance, the new Scirocco offered a stylish, performance-oriented alternative for drivers who found the Golf too ordinary.

Drawing directly from the GT24 endurance racer, the Scirocco R adopted the same 2.0-litre TSI engine, DSG dual-clutch gearbox, and race-tuned suspension, positioning it as the range-topping VW model. Its aggressive look, featuring a special body kit, side skirts, and a larger rear roof spoiler was a direct nod to the GT24's design.

Inside, the driver is held low in an embossed black leather sports seat, behind a flat-bottom steering wheel. A central auxiliary instrument cluster, displaying a chronometer, charge pressure, and oil temperature, pays homage to the original 1974 model. With the 2014 facelift engine generating ~280PS, the Scirocco R became the most powerful production Scirocco ever built, delivering performance to match its striking appearance.

Coming to market after almost ~6 years, this Scirocco R is finished in black with a leather interior and has been exceptionally well maintained. Its care is documented by eight service stamps and a recent service that included a new cambelt, water pump, tensioner, and timing chain. The car comes complete with its full owner's wallet, two keys, and will have a fresh MOT prior to collection.

This car is in excellent, near-showroom condition with a superb paint finish.

Wheels and Tyres

The five-spoke 'Cadiz' alloy wheels are in excellent condition.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Pirelli Dragonsport tyres with a spec of 235/35 - these are date-coded from 2024. All are in positive shape with plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

The exterior presents positively, with no discernible signs of panel damage. The panels are flush, and the shut lines are consistent. All doors open and close with ease.

The underside of the car is solid, free of grounding scrapes or damage. There is some surface wear on some exposed components, but along with the engine bay, wheel wells and boot floor, the overall condition is reassuring.

Paint

The deep black pearlescent paint has an excellent lustre, free of swirls or fade. We couldn’t make out any significant road wear chips on the car, and the finish is consistent in hue with no distracting marks.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are in good shape, with no issues noted on the lighting; the daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights and LEDs are all good although there was a little condensation inside both front lenses.

The trim is in good shape, with no significant marks, aside from the occasional minor age-related fade on some of the side glass trim.

The bumpers are flush to the body, free of scuffs or marks.

Interior

The interior's near-pristine condition is a testament to Volkswagen's build quality.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in excellent condition. The front pair have no significant marks or wear and the rear shows just light marks from a child seat.

The carpets are all clean and damp-free.

The boot carpet suggests sympathetic and light use.

Dashboard

The dashboard padding and facia present well, with nothing more than a few minor marks around the glovebox, but well above the expectations of a car of this age.

The dials, controls, switches and screens are all clean and free of wear. All are said to work as they should, including the air con.

The door cards and headlining are in good order.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel, paddle shift and gear selector lever are in good shape with no marks or wear.

Mechanics

While graceful to drive, the car also possesses significant untapped power potential.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start posed no issue at all; the dashboard warning lights all went off the moment the engine turned over and remained off during our visit. The engine idles smoothly, with the exhaust condensation soon clearing. It was free of any untoward noises, with no tapping or vibrations.

The engine presents well, with signs of regular maintenance. The plastic coverings are free of cracks or wear. The car was leak-free on the day of our visit.

The DSG gearbox operates smoothly, with seamless shifts when accelerating and slowing down. James demonstrated its potency once the engine had properly warmed up and was satisfied with its operation.

The gearbox has recently had new oil and a filter.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension travel is even and smooth, with no unwanted noises heard at any point.

The car brakes effectively, free of wobbles or squeals.

The car has a complete set of new discs and pads.

Being picky, the rear components themselves have some surface corrosion.

The Drive

VW’s long-established reputation for performance and quality goes hand in hand with tech and practicality. The Scirocco in R form exemplifies this with its six-speed DSG automatic gearbox mated to a turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI petrol unit from the Golf R.

The ride is firm, but free of any rattles from the wheels or the cabin. The steering manages the road without any problems, free of faults. The car pulls effortlessly without any hesitation, with a mild, harmonious hum and the slight acoustic purr of the exhaust.

The upgraded electronic limited-slip differential and Adaptive Chassis Control system allow the driver to push the car to its limits with confidence. Even without driver assistance, the Scirocco R is a spirited drive with a balanced chassis.

James has not had any issues with the car regarding reliability; its oil pressure and engine temperature have not shown any problems.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electric in the Scirocco during our visit but James told us, as far as he was aware, that everything is in working order.

The car is fitted with the Dynaudio sound system and has a colour touchscreen infotainment system including DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

It is fitted with a Maxton Design front splitter.

Regularly serviced since new, it has just had a new cambelt, water pump, tensioner and timing chain.

First registered in November 2015, this facelift Scirocco R comes with 8 service stamps and was recently serviced, along with a new cambelt, water pump, tensioner and timing chain.

It comes with its owner's wallet and booklets, and has two keys. James has placed a full year's MOT on the car.
