Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

An Italian open top icon with a mesmerisingly wonderful soundtrack.

Alfa Romeo is one of the few brands that have consistently remained true to the demands of their customer base, providing a little soul and passion to every one of its products. One of the most iconic designs to come from the factory was the 105-Series Spider, a car that remained in production for almost 30 years without sacrificing its character or purpose. The Series 2 models, first seen in 1969 were recognisable by their cut-off ‘Kamm’ tail and revised interior.

Powered by the 2.0 litre Twin-Cam engine fed by twin Weber carbs, the S2 models were the last cars to be officially converted at the factory by Alfa Romeo for the RHD market. Fitted with a rear seat, bigger bumpers and improved instrumentation, the car remained true to its roots without diluting the glorious driving experience.

Originally registered in the UK in 1976, this Rosso Red S2 is superbly presented, with an exceptionally clean interior and has been well maintained. It is MOT'd and road tax exempt, comes with two keys and was originally owned by 1970s voice actor, William Franklyn, the voice of Schweppes Tonic.

Prices of S1 cars have gone stratospheric over recent years and more recently S2 models have been on the rise too - here at TC we tip these S2 cars as excellent future investment opportunities.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Scott the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

It's clear to see that this Alfa has been cherished over the years.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 15” Alfaholic 105 wheels, all in excellent condition with no damage observed.

They are fitted with a full set of Michelin tyres which are all less than 5 years old with plenty of thread.

Bodywork

The exterior presents very well, with no significant issues. The panel fit is positive with acceptable shut line gaps and the body is free from dents. The doors open and close with no issues, although a little more effort is needed to open and close the driver-side door. The front and rear valance are in good shape, with no issues noted on the windscreen surrounds or the wheel arches. There are minor blemishes noted on the base of the inside of both passenger doors and the boot well.

The floor pan appears to be solid, with no issues noted on the front cross member, suspension mounts or chassis rails, other than some damage noted near the front offside jacking point. The sills have a liberal amount of inhibitor but appear to be solid. The wheel wells and boot floor look in good shape. The plate under the radiator has minor corrosion, with some minor surface corrosion noted in the engine bay. There is a minor non-structural coin sized hole below the footwell mats/trim on an apex piece of metal which shapes the edge of the footwell.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint finish has a decent lustre and catches the sun with some signs of hazing. The colour match is positive throughout the car. There are a few patches on the car that suggest an under-paint reaction, but are only noticeable upon close inspection and mostly confined to the tops of nearside front and offside rear wings. There are some marks are noted at the bottom of the nearside wing and valance too. The car is generally free of road wear chips.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with no screen chips. Both side windows retract with ease. The car has a good set of glass seals and door rubbers. The lights and lenses are in good condition, the front lens covers are free from fogging and cracks.

The chrome work has lasted well, with mild signs of age noted on the door handles. The windscreen pillar and door mirror chrome are excellent, with the bumpers in decent shape with a little dulling in places. The rubber trim is in decent shape with mild distortion in places.

Interior

The interior is near flawless and has retained much of its originality.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in excellent condition, with very little in terms of wear. The driver seat tipping knob will need replacing.

The cabin is furnished with rubber mats and all are in good shape with no significant fraying or rips. The boot is fitted with a carpet, there are age-related marks and wear but more importantly dry as a bone.

Dashboard

The interior is very neatly presented, with very little in terms of wear. The dashboard is free from cracks or holes. The two cool-looking binnacle pods are intact with mild marking noted on the casing. All of the switchgear, dials and controls are in good shape, with no issues in terms of the plastic trim and facia housing. The door cards are in very clean and well mounted.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with a wooden Nardi steering wheel, it's in excellent condition, with no significant issues noted on the gear lever or its gaiter.

Mechanics

Well maintained with the promise of a glorious soundtrack, the twin-cam engine sounds magnificent.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up without any hesitation, spluttering or unwanted noses. It idles smoothly as the warning lights remain off. Once warmed up, it settles into that delicious initial burble and cammy sound. There was no unwanted exhaust smoke at any point. We left the engine running for a few minutes, with no ill effects on the momentum of the engine, and no spikes in the engine temperature or oil pressure gauge. The car was free of leaks on the day.

The engine presentation is positive, with plenty of evidence of maintenance, and intact hoses and ancillaries. There were no signs of oil seepage from the engine and no historical evidence of overheating.

The gearbox was demonstrated to work well, Scott pointed out that the synchromesh in 2nd has a slight grind on occasion but the shifts themselves are smooth. It engages reverse with no problems. The clutch has a good biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The cars felt controlled on the move and didn’t roll around the corners. There were no knocks heard from the wheels.

The braking felt positive, with no grinding or vibrations. It stops effectively and evenly.

The Drive

The sound of the 2.0-litre twin-cam engine by itself is a strong argument to buy an Alfa Romeo. The engines are tuneful, high-revving units - the Alfa is all about the quality of the experience. Nimble and well-balanced, the uneven ruts and occasional potholes didn’t cause any issues to the ride.

The steering is direct with a positive level of sharpness, with no unwanted noises. During the test run, the oil pressure and water temperature remained within safe levels.

Electrics and Other

The canvas roof is an original fitting, while it displays age-related wear, it offers a tight snug fit and raises and lowers without any issues. The inside of roof is decent without any marks or signs of damp. It also comes with its original leather hood cover, which is in excellent shape and a good fit.

Pioneer speakers have been fitted one each side of the centre console but they were not tested. The car comes with a spare pair of lens covers and an indoor car cover.

History and Paperwork

The car has been kept by several long term owners, which has clearly helped it to remain in such an original condition.

The car is a genuine RHD factory-built car and was imported into the UK in May 1976. It is believed that the car was bought by the well-known voice actor William Franklyn for his wife and was retained by the family for at least a decade. Prior to the current owner, Scott who bought it in 2016, It appears to have been kept by the previous keeper for 35 years. It has been garaged throughout Scott's ownership.

The car has been handled over the years by Specialists at Bianco Auto Developments, who will be happy to verify its originality. Scott has kept on top of the maintenance and it comes with some invoices for parts. There is also a batch of previous MOTs, including one from 1989, which helps verify its mileage. It comes with two keys, its handbook and is MOT and Road Tax exempt.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.
