Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

A smart Italian icon, the Alfa Romeo SZ pairs racing pedigree with unmistakable style - rare, thrilling, and highly collectible.

The Alfa Romeo SZ, short for Sprint Zagato, stands as one of the most daring and instantly recognisable cars of its era. Born from a collaboration between Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and the legendary coachbuilder Zagato, the SZ broke away from convention with its bold, angular lines, composite bodywork, and purposeful stance.

Nicknamed “Il Mostro” (The Monster) by enthusiasts, its styling divided opinion at launch, but today it is celebrated as a design icon of late 20th-century motoring. Underneath the striking exterior lies Alfa’s celebrated 3.0L V6 engine, with a rear-wheel-drive setup, paired with a chassis derived from Alfa’s racing heritage. This combination offered sharp handling, a thrilling soundtrack, and a true driver-focused experience.

This example comes to market with low ownership and a current MOT valid until March 2026. With only ~1,036 examples produced, the SZ is far more than a rare collectors' car, it represents Alfa Romeo’s willingness to take risks, blending performance, individuality, and Italian flair in a way no other marque could.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Surjit the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

Bold, angular, and instantly recognisable, the SZ’s striking exterior turns heads with its daring design and unmistakable flair.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16" SZ alloy wheels, finished in silver all appeared to be in good overall condition. We noted some light age-related marks to the wheels, in keeping with the age of the Alfa, but otherwise, there were no major issues.

The car is fitted with Pirelli P6000 tyres all round showing 205/55 at the front and 225/50 at the rear - the front tyres are date coded from 2006 and 2002 to the rear.

There were a few signs of cracking to the sidewalls which may be a consideration to replace by the future owner.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Alfa and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The exterior is honest in its presentation as there are areas of wear. There were no major dings to the panels. All of the doors and the boot and bonnet open and close well and the underside looks respectable, just signs of age to the surfaces.

There was a note of scuffing to the driver side rear trim by the door and places where chipping is shown the panels on the bonnet edge. There was also a mark to the driver side rear roof section and areas of lacquer peel here.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork on the Alfa has good coverage and is consistent in presentation across the panels. Finished in red, the colour perfectly complements its Italian heritage.

A good level of polishing and detailing would likely bring back some of the original shine although considering some areas, a respray may be beneficial.

We noted there were stone chips over the front panels and scuffing to the front and rear bumper - there were signs of touch up paint to the front bumper also.

Looking closely at the passenger side and rear of the car, there were several marks on show including some microblisters. The front and rear of the underside showed scuffs where the car sits lower on the road.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

For the most part, the glass appeared in nice condition. We could see no signs of major scratching on the glass, although it was noted on the current MOT that there was some damage on the passenger side to the offside lower windscreen.

Front and rear lights showed a little age, although were functional when we visited the car.

Badges and motifs are all present and look smart in their presentation.

The carbon style rear spoiler was a nice, sporty feature which showed well.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The roof was finished in a well complementing black colour, although we saw some marks to the finish.

We've taken you around the car in greater detail in our exterior review video, please take the time to look over the video and see how the glass and trim look from different perspectives.

Interior

Great design meets purposeful simplicity in the cabin - an interior as striking and unique as the car itself.

Seats and Carpets

The Alfa is fitted out with comfortable beige leather seats with an embossed 'Zagato Design' logo in the headrests. Overall, the seats show in nice condition, but there were a few small areas of wear to the driver's bolster and a couple of marks on the passenger seat. Nothing that stood out to us as a real concern here though.

To the rear of the cabin, the carpeted bench section showed with very few signs of use.

The car is fitted with tan coloured floor carpets - the drivers side showed marks to the footwell and the passenger side had a note of heel wear, but overall though, these presented in good condition.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dashboard, with carbon style inset panels, appears in respectable shape although looked a little tired above drivers facing area. The odometer showed ~95,679 kilometres at the time of our visit.

The display area of the gauges is clear and without concern, with the 3 main drivers dials looking good. All instruments are functional, showing clearly with no obvious marking or scratching to the facings across the driver's section.

Our interior gallery section offers some closer images of the Alfa dashboard - head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finished in black leather, the MOMO steering wheel is in great condition and the Alfa Romeo crest, fitted to the centre of the wheel, showed well here.

The gear selector and handbrake showed well and without major concern, just a few notes of age.

We've detailed more images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, in our Interior Gallery section—head over to see more shots of what the SZ has to offer.

Mechanics

The engine bay houses a 3.0L V6, producing ~210 BHP, launching this striking coupe from 0-60 in ~7 seconds from factory - a true blend of Italian power and drama.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns - the Alfa performed without issue while running and out on the road and we saw no issues or signs of smoke.

The 5-speed manual gearbox worked well on the road, with no unwanted noises from the functionality of the car. The SZ showed no concerns regarding its performance while we were driving out in it.

Looking over the engine bay showed the sound deadening had worn on the bonnet underside.

We took the car out on some local roads to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the SZ through the gears and filmed our overview on how the car performed.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no untoward knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations although were slightly soft, a brake bleed by the future owner may be of benefit here. The brakes brought the car to a stop without a problem though and inline with our expectations.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Behind the wheel of the Alfa Romeo, the driving experience is every bit as bold as its striking design. The SZ delivers sharp, exhilarating performance with a soundtrack that’s unmistakably Alfa.

A rear-wheel-drive layout, power steering, and finely tuned suspension create a confidence-inspiring ride, whether carving through corners or cruising along the open road.

Planted and alive on the tarmac, the SZ offers a raw, visceral, and unmistakably Italian driving experience that perfectly reflects its racing DNA.

The oil pressure gauge showed a little low, and we saw a warning light here when starting the car up, but this quickly went away when we were out on the road.

There was a fuel warning light on show when we started the car, but only as the petrol wasn't filled up fully.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the vehicle we noted that all switches, dials, and gauges appear undamaged and are in good condition overall.

The Alfa is equipped with a Clarion stereo, although we were unable to verify its operation. We were also unable to fully test all of the electronic functions when visiting the car.

History and Paperwork

Previously imported and incredibly rare, the Alfa SZ is well worth a closer look over to appreciate the value of its limited production run.

The Alfa is noted as 'Number 028' with its smart badging in the cabin area indicating its rarity, especially given only ~1,036 of these were ever made.

Complete with its original SZ owners folio and service booklet, this charming and honest Alfa Romeo would make for a lovely collectors item with a little time and attention.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa.
