Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

A much-loved and dependable British icon with a Californian twist.

As English as the stone architecture of the Cotswolds or the stunning natural landscapes of Yorkshire, the Morris Minor has a place in the very heart of the UK. With 4 decades of production, the humble but loyal Morris Minor served the people as a charming, affordable and dependable companion. Relatively unchanged during its production run, the Minor did see incremental engine and trim upgrades. By the time it reached its final series V guise in 1962, it was powered by the upgraded A-Series 1098cc engine. Sold in four distinct body styles, each model offered an impressive interior space and was appreciated for its good handling. Easy to work on and mechanically straightforward, the Minor was instrumental to mobility in the post-war era, and the ‘Moggie’ was recognised as being one of the few family cars to attract Classic car status while it was still in production.

This exceptionally well-prepared 1964 Morris Minor Traveller has been thoughtfully converted into a ‘Woodie’ style estate car and has been treated to a tasteful interior overhaul, and the wood panelling has been expertly bent to follow the curve of the wood frame. Finished in "Smoke Grey" with a limited-run "Duo-tone" interior, it has also seen useful mechanical and interior modifications, such as an electric fuel pump. Sold with over £7k worth of invoices and receipts, this smartly presented example has been lovingly restored to a high standard.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting George the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The exterior is flawlessly executed and beautifully presented.

Wheels and Tyres

The painted Morris Marina 13” steel wheels are in good shape, showing mild paint wear. The hub caps are in excellent condition as seen in the pictures.

The front of the car is shod with 2019 Achilles tyres and the rear pair are branded Tigar. All have even and legal tread.

Bodywork

The exterior is in excellent shape, with no panel damage or marks. The panels are flush to the body, and the shut lines are consistent. All doors open and close with ease. The engine bay, wheel wells, suspension mounts and floor pan look good, showing mild signs of corrosion on the nearside rear section of the sill. The underside has a coat of protector such as Waxoyl.

The Ash wood frame is solid. The owner has informed us that the frame was remade in 2004 and sanded and oiled as part of the restoration. The wood panels have been worked on by an expert, the craftsmanship used to bend them to match the curves of the wood frame.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The smoke grey paint finish has a positive lustre and a smooth finish with mild swirls. The hue is consistent across the panels with no significant marks, chips or scuffs noticed.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, only the driver side quarter light shows mild signs of age, but all have good seals. The rear glass panels slide back and forth with ease, and the light and lenses are in good shape.

Its chrome trim is also in excellent condition, with both bumpers evenly fitted on the body with no outstanding flaws.

Interior

Tastefully furnished, it retains its rare Duo-tone cabin and humble charm.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in near-perfect condition, furnished with a duotone covering that replicates the original limited edition run style. The driver's seat is fully adjustable.

The attractive blue heat-moulded carpets are also matched with the original style. There are a few mild marks, but all are damp-free and protected by Morris motif rubber mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard is smartly presented, free of scuffs or significant signs of age. Both cubby storage areas have the rare and original lids, and the switchgear and dial are in good condition. All are said to work. As a useful addition, it is fitted with an aftermarket engine temperature gauge, but otherwise has a standard setup. It retains the neat stalk with the green flashing tip.

The door cards are in excellent shape, utilising the original door pulls, and the headlining is excellent too. The luggage section trim is clean, with minimal signs of use.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden Moto Lita steering wheel and gear lever are a smart addition to a very well-considered, renovated cabin.

Mechanics

Well maintained over the years, the Minor's hardy A-Series engine feels unburstable.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1,098cc engine starts up with no issues. The car had been in storage for a long period, but it runs smoothly with no unwanted knocks or rattles heard from the engine. It may benefit from a tune-up, but it idles without undulations. The ignition light went off straight away after the start-up process, and the exhaust was free of excessive fumes. The engine presentation is positive, with evidence of maintenance and upkeep. The ancillaries and hoses look good.

The 4-speed gearbox operates without reported faults, it engages gears smoothly, and George is satisfied with the performance of the clutch.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has mild signs of age on some of the components, but it performs on the road with no unwanted noises. It corners well, with a charismatic bounce, but absorbs the road surface and ruts with no significant issues.

The car brakes smoothly with no negative feel. It has a servo brake adapter, which certainly adds confidence to the car's braking, its action is very progressive.

The Drive

The A-series 1098cc OHV engine is one of the best-known engines in UK Classic car circles, and has provided sterling service for millions of Morris’, MGs and Minis over the years. Th engine was a new design when this car was built, and it retains its reputation for flexible torque and efficiency.

The Minor feels spritely on the move, providing a certain eagerness and pulling strongly from the rest. Some engine noise came through into the cabin, but it never missed a beat. The steering is compliant, with no unwanted wobbles or significant play, and remained straight during a mild braking test.

Electrics and Other

Converted by a local carpenter, the hand crafted solid marine-grade wood sheets were fitted to replace the original steel panel and have been oiled for protection. The rear luggage area catches are original and cleanly presented and function without issues.

George has also told us that the car has an electric fuel pump, and the chassis has been checked and welded in a couple of areas for extra strength.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~4 year ownership, the restoration of the car was completed early, covering a complete exterior and interior overhaul with Woody styling, and dry storage since.

First registered in the local area to Abingdon in July 1964, the car has had eight registered keepers since new, including a vicar, with previous owners keeping the car for long periods. It saw an ash frame and floor pan restoration in the mid-2000s and has been subsequently maintained by subsequent owners. Its MOT records suggest that the car had been used regularly into the 2010s.

Since taking on the car in 2021, George has spent over ~£7,000 on it, including a complete interior renovation, service items and a complete body renovation, covering the transformation into the ‘Woodie’ look and fresh paint in its original 'smoke grey' colour.

Before George’s ownership from 2015 to 2017, the car saw ~£1.2k worth of mechanical work and maintenance. It comes with a selection of spare parts, mainly for maintenance. The car is road tax and MOT exempt.
