Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Four-wheel drive and a turbocharged five-cylinder engine made the Audi Quattro pretty much untouchable on the forest stages.

At the International Geneva Motor Show in 1980, Audi released the Quattro, with its box arches and revolutionary state-of-the-art four-wheel drive system. However, the Quattro design goes back to 1977, in the deep snow of Sweden, where a team of Audi engineers were testing their military all-terrain vehicles, which would outperform other more powerful models. This led the team to develop an Audi 80 with the drivetrain from the military all-terrain vehicles, and it was there that the Quattro idea was born to be used in road-going vehicles.

This new design gave the Audi Quattro some of the best handling characteristics from the Audi factory. Coupled with a 2.2 litre turbocharged engine, it was a very exclusive package. Initially planned for low-volume production, the demand was more popular than anticipated once released. With massive success in the motorsport world, particularly in rallying, the Quattro has earned the right to become one of the most iconic cars to come out of the 1980s.

Our vendors, Paula and Graham are selling this 1984 Audi Quattro - the car belonged to his petrolhead brother, who sadly passed away before this classic Audi was ready to hit the road again.

So here we have an actual barn find that's ready to be taken to the next level.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Graham the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Graham's brother Ian was a successful rally driver/co-driver, and the Audi Quattro was always one of his favourites.

The car was purchased by Ian in 2002 as a running car, which just needed some tidying up on the mechanical side. The car is thought to have been used for a couple of years up until 2004, when it was taken off the road, ready for some work to be carried out.

Ian collected some parts for the car over the years, which are included (small parts like odd bushes and brackets).

Paula and Graham tell us the car has always been kept covered, mostly in Ian's home garage, then moved to another unit, and finally this barn, where it has sat for the past few years, untouched. Graham will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

It is true '80s motorsport style with its box arches and iconic looks.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are in good condition with just some minor corrosion. You may have noticed the front passenger wheel is different, but Graham does have the original wheel and the other three odd wheels to make a spare set.

The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining, but these are over 20 years old and would need to be replaced during any future restoration.

Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Audi is actually very good, with minimal signs of exterior corrosion. There are some small blisters at the bottom of the wings where they meet the sill and some others to the rear wheel arch, but these haven’t broken through the paintwork.

The panels visually align well and the underside also looks to be in very good condition, seeing as it has been standing for over 20 years.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Tornado Red, there are no apparent signs that the car has ever been fully repainted. Unfortunately, the paintwork does have micro blisters all over, possibly caused by being stored under a non-breathable cover. When we’d finished the photography of the car in its raw state, we then cleaned some of the panels with a waterless wash, which can be seen in the gallery, and apart from the blistering, the paintwork does actually present quite well.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in good condition with no chips or cracks. There are some light age-related scratches to the passenger and driver’s windows. All trims and seals appear to be in good condition, with no signs of perishing or kinks in the aluminium trim.

The headlights, fog lights and indicators are free from any damage, and the reflectors appear in good condition. The factory-tinted rear lights and the Coupe centre panel are free from any damage.

Interior

The Audi was treated to a full leather 20-valve Quattro interior in 1993.

Seats and Carpets

Treating you with a spot of luxury, the Quattro now boasts a full grey leather interior. The seats are in need of a deep clean, and there is a small amount of colour wear to the bolster, but no real signs of excessive wear. The door cards again have no scuffs or damage, although there is some light discolouration.

The grey carpets would benefit from a deep clean, but once this has been done, they should look quite nice as there are no real areas of wear to mention.

Inside the boot is clean and tidy and the boot floor looks in good order, with no apparent signs of corrosion.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from any splits, cracks or scuffs. The LCD instrument cluster did light up when we connected the battery, but it was only dim, and when the ignition was turned off, it did go brighter for a split second. Going from the MOT history, it is thought to have approximately ~123,233 miles, with ~54,335 of those on the new short engine.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original steering wheel has a small amount of wear in keeping with the age of the Quattro.

The gear knob has some wear, but there is another one included, which is in good order.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

A 2.2-litre turbocharged 10-valve five-cylinder engine graces the engine bay of the Quattro.

Engine and Gearbox

Having stood for some time, we did not attempt to start the Quattro. We can confirm that the engine does turn over by hand by putting a ratchet on the crank, but obviously, this is as far as we've gone during the visit. We did take the cam cover off for you to see the top of the engine / camshaft.

We understand from Graham that the car was driven into the barn, and so it was running back then, but there was no exhaust fitted from the downpipe back.

There is an invoice is for a replacement short engine fitted in the car in 1990 by a Volkswagen Audi dealer, however, as you can see in the images, there is no number stamped onto it; we can only assume the engine came supplied to the dealer blank and then issued with an engine number for the paperwork.

It goes without saying that an extensive recommissioning is in order before the Audi is even attempted to be started.

Suspension and Brakes

The car sits level, and there don’t appear to be any leaks. There are some spare bushes in the parts, so we can only assume some do need to be replaced.

The good news is that the brakes on the car weren’t stuck on. The Audi does move; obviously everything on the braking system will need an expert eye going over all the components and hoses before it’s driven again.

The Drive

Being a barn find, we can’t take the car out to experience the turbocharged Audi Quattro in all its glory.

We will leave that pleasure to the next lucky custodian following the recommissioning.

Electrics and Other

Looking at the switchgear, it all looks to be in good condition with minimal wear. The electric windows, mirrors, central locking, lights, Sony radio and alarm appear to be working correctly, but that’s as far as we checked. The car doesn't come with a battery.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

There is a substantial collection of invoices for various parts fitted over the years dating back to the 80s.

One significant invoice is for a replacement short engine fitted in the car in 1990 by a Volkswagen Audi dealer, and it is listed on the invoice, also with a card with the engine number. The engine itself, however, has no number stamped onto it; we can only assume the engine came supplied to the dealer blank and then issued with an engine number for the paperwork.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks, including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello.

I have noticed some points on the car that don’t quite add up to it being a 1984 car.

Could you advise if the car has ever been reshelled ?

It appears the interior carpet, under bonnet insulation and the panel gap on slam panel are all from a later 20v model only available in 1989.

I can see this as the carpet is definitely from 20v which is totally different to a 10v. And there fore only way it could fit is if it was a 20v floor pan.

The front slam panel as an access section that can be removed to get to the small aux radiator. This again was only on an 1988/89/90 body shell.

The bonnet has insulation foam on under side and stickers to the centre, this was only don’t like that on a 20v again 1989 model.

Its possible car has been reshelled but thought id ask incase you now more.

Despite this, I am interested and wondered if you could show pictures of the condition of the carpet under neath the rubber/cloth mats.

Best regards

Hi,

The seller Graham has sent us some pictures of the carpets etc. These can be seen from this image onwards in the “Interior” Gallery; https://www.tradeclassics.com/auctions/audi/1984-audi-quattro/#gallery2-113

Graham adds that the passenger footwell carpet is dry.

Best,
