Quattro power, and then some - this Nothelle version puts out ~300BHP with its performance upgrades.

The Audi Quattro is a road rally car first shown to the world at 1980 the Geneva Motor Show. However this is no ordinary Ur-Quattro, this model has been given the proper Rolf Nothelle treatment, changes that raise the performance figures from the standard ~220BHP at 5900rpm to ~300BHP at 6000rpm. The changes include increased displacement from 2.2L to 2.5L giving even greater torque, Audi sport IMSA pistons, all suspension bushes and dampers uprated, along with the brake discs, pads, water and oil pumps.

This original Audi Quattro Nothelle is coming to market from 12 years ownership, the current vendor as an engineer himself, is highly particular when it comes to maintenance. As such the car has had a thorough service in preparation for sale, preventative measures to help ensure this iconic 4 wheel drive turbo can continue to perform for years to come.

Meet the owner

How best to describe it, my experience of the car, a real quattro on steroids.

Kevin, first heard about the Nothelle 20v from the 1996 Audi Magazine, with the car in great condition, and low mileage, he didn't want to miss the chance of ownership. He reports this version was fully approved and worked on by Nothelle in Germany, mentioning it's not just a simple ECU change like some UK version, changes in Germany are strictly controlled.

During his ownership, he carried out no repair work, just regular servicing. The most recent service being carried out in 2022 with many components changed for "preventative maintenance purposes" and preparation for sale. This saw new items as follows; clutch hydraulics, thermostat, main and secondary radiators, clutch release bearing, tooth timing belt, water pump, and an Audi battery (with a 2 year warranty).

Kevin reports owning Quattro turbos since '89, and so knows a thing or two when it comes to maintaining such a car. Part of Kevin's retirement plans is to sell a collection of his road cars, this being the first. Kevin mentions he'll be keeping his collection of rally cars to enjoy on the weekends. Exterior

The legendary Ur Quattro Turbo Coupe with its rally inspired flared box wheel arches, oh so very 80s.

Wheels and Tyres

15" original 20v Turbo multi-spoke wheels are fitted on this car, all 4 wheels appear in very good condition with no signs for concern, the wheels having been refurbished prior to Kevins purchase.

The Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tyres look great on this example, Kevin went to the effort of sourcing the correct 215/50 size through the Quattro owners club (many people run this model on oversized 225 tyres). There are no obvious signs of degradation, they and are dated 2012 and no issues reported in the MOT report from this month.

Bodywork

Known for its bold and boxy looks, the body on this Quattro really stands out on any road. The bodywork on this example appears in great condition, panels appear very straight with the gaps and shut lines looking very good, as you would expect for a well maintained and cherished car.

Paint

Finished in Audi's "Panther Black Metallic" (LY9Z) it suits the 80s square panels very well. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout. Kevin reports no work carried out over his ownership on the paint, and mentions just some light micro scratches caused from the 30+ years of washing and polishing, and only some very light stone chips etc that have been touched in to prevent deterioration.

Glass and Trim

The black trim around the car of the car appears in great condition, the gradient Audi logo and with some Nothelle decals in choice locations to give a hint of what lies beneath the hood.

The glass looks great, with no signs of cracks or discolouration noticed. The headlights were refurbished by the previous owner, with new reflectors purchase, presenting in very good condition now. Interior

Step back in time to 1990 with this rally focused, but high-quality leather interior.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with dark grey leather sports seats and a lighter grey carpeting. The condition of the seats is in line with the mileage of the car, showing the lightest signs of use for a ~66,000 mile example, and present in great condition considering.

Dashboard

A futuristic 80s digital dash is present, this was quite something when the Ur first launched. The dashboard and various buttons and controls in the centre console, all appear in line with the rest of the interior and Kevin reports everything works as it should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A three-spoke Audi Sport steering wheel is fitted along with a manual gear stick - both items appear in great condition within the interior. View the media pack to see the details.

Mechanics

The real Nothelle changes are apparent under the bonnet with displacement increased from 2.2L to 2.5L, creating a much more powerful ~300BHP unit.

Engine and Gearbox

Radical treatment by Nothelle and increased displacement, engine modification increased figures to 490 Nm torque at 2,700rpm, Audi Sport IMSA pistons were fitted, complete suspension and brake overhaul were carried out, and a new oil cooler came to the final cost of just over £13,000.

It's worth noting also, that in addition to the maintenance work just actioned by Kevin, the previous owner fitted a new oil cooler and hoses, important items for the set-up on this car.

Suspension and Brakes

Along with the engine upgrades, the car benefitted from Koni dampers, and uprated discs and pads to deal with the extra power.

Kevin reports a firm and direct ride in the Ur-quattro, but that it isn't uncomfortable or give a harsh ride. He mentions the suspension and brakes are working exactly as you would expect, the previous owner having completed refurbishment of the braking system including; new master cylinder, brake accumulator, ABS pump and new rear calipers.

The Drive

With larger 225/50 tyres which give the rubber a little more surface area to transmit the power through all the wheels. The main feature of this example is the tuned Nothelle engine and chassis set-up, a reduction in roll meaning greater balance when cornering.

Electrics and Other

Kevin reports all the electrics, buttons, gauges etc work within the car to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

This is no ordinary Ur-Quattro, it is likely the only UK Nothelle that is running with the full suite of works, and with mileage at ~66,000 and condition to match, quite the catch.

The car was originally a 1990 Audi Ur-Quattro 20V Coupe which was converted to a ~300BHP Nothelle, fitted with Audi Sport IMSA pistons, complete suspension overhaul, brake overhaul, and oil cooler which came to the cost of just over £13,000 in 1995. Kevin believes this is the only fully approved 20v version in the UK.

The car was featured in the October 1996 copy of 'Volkswagen Audi Car' Magazine and quotes the car outputs 300bhp, a top speed of 163mph, and a 0-60 speed of 5.7 seconds.

Over the past 12 years Kevin has replaced the following components with new parts; Airflow meter, spark plugs, rotor arm, distributor cap, brake hoses, sensors, and recently changed out the oil, antifreeze, power steering, hydraulic oil, clutch hydraulic oil. Mentioning the brake fluid was last changed in 2019.

The most recent service being carried out in 2022 with many components changed for "preventative maintenance purposes" and preparation for sale.
