Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigners

With its shark nose design, the 635 CSi is an instantly recognisable icon of BMW heritage.

Originally released in 1976, the E24 was the first generation of the 6 Series; BMW's luxury coupe which replaced the E9 CS/CSL. The 635 CSi Highline features a 3.4L inline-six, producing ~208bhp in the later year models such as this car.

This specific car is a late 1989 model, comes to market from ~8 year ownership with just ~7,000 miles covered in this time. The 635 CSi has an MOT valid until 04.06.2024, it has only ~71,523 on the clock. Stored off road for some years before 2014 before being sold in 2015.

The car has been serviced annually in the current ownership, and the only major items it has needed were new shocks - the car presents well, comes with a private plate (96 NUR) and ready for a new owner to enjoy.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Bill the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Having owned the car for ~8 years, Bill has only covered ~7,000 miles in this time, using it as a weekend cruiser.

Having a busy life Bill hasn't had as much time to drive the 635 as he'd like, he has also bought a new car and just doesn't have the garage space anymore. Bill will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

A classic shape, the 635 CSi has the iconic shark nose design and popular Zinnoberrot red paint.

Wheels and Tyres

The factory fitted BMW wheels were found on the car, they looked in decent condition, with just some curb marks on the outers of some of the wheels. We did also notice some of the paint on the wheels was looking tired, mostly on the rear passenger side wheel.

Michelin tyres were found all round the car, a pair of TRX at the front and TRX with a different tread pattern at the rear, all looked to have plenty of tread on them, however all the sidewalls showed some cracking, the rears showing a bit more signs of this. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork around the 635 looked in great condition, shut lines on doors/bonnet and boot looked tight and correct, and the car looks to be free from any major dents.

Generally speaking it is a solid example that has been well looked after, but we did notice a slight issue with the offside front wing, with a slight bit of corrosion showing just in front of the wheel, and a bit of corrosion showing on the bottom of the rear bumper too. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a popular colour of "Zinnoberrot" red paint, in general it looked in ok condition, but in the bright sunlight we did notice quite a lot of swirl marks over the car that would benefit from being polished out.

We also noticed the nearside front wing looked to have possibly had some paintwork in the past as the colour was slightly off on a section of it, we have pointed this out in the photos below. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass around the car looked in good condition, we didn't notice any chips or cracks in any of the glass. The sunroof on this example is fully functioning with both the tilt and slide functions, and the car also has an electrically operated aerial that works as it should do.

The chrome trim around the car looked in great condition, with no unwanted markings noticed on any of the chrome, the rubber trim also looked in great condition, all nice and shiny.

Interior

The luxurious cabin makes the 635 CSi a comfortable place to be, with leather electric seats and an automatic gearbox.

Seats and Carpets

The grey leather seats looked in good condition, these are electrically adjustable and working correctly, including electrically adjustable headrests. The drivers seat outer bolster was showing a bit of wear in line with age, the other seats looks in great condition.

The carpets looked in good condition too, we didn't notice any stains in any of the carpets. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The clean, uncluttered dashboard has all the information the driver needs, it looked in good condition too. The car has the period on board BMW computer, this is working as it should do.

We did notice a small mark on the matching leather which surrounds the dials, and also some of the stitching in the same area was missing. Take a look through the gallery to see the detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic 3-pronged steering wheel looked to be in good condition, it showed slight signs of wear/age but nothing major.

The automatic gear selector was also showing slight signs of wear too but again nothing major. The handbrake was looking slightly tired. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

Under the long bonnet lives a 3.5L straight-six capable of producing and delivering ~208BHP to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up without issue on its first attempt. On the road, the engine was smooth and quite happy cruising along the back roads.

The gearbox performed well on our drive with Bill, changes were silky smooth with no unwanted noises noticed. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension of the 635 CSi felt great, on the B-roads the car held the road well, gliding over bumps with ease. We didn't notice any noises coming from the suspension either.

On our short drive with Bill we didn't notice any issues with the brakes, they stopped the car with no pulling or unwanted noises.

The Drive

Whilst out on the road with Bill the 635 CSi performed without fault, getting up to speed on the back roads with ease keeping the cabin quiet and comfortable, the engine and gearbox felt really smooth.

To see the 635 CSi in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

A modern stereo has been fitted to the car, with an auxiliary input and CD player, it was working well on our visit, including the electrically controlled aerial. The car comes with fully functioning electric front seats which include headrest adjustment, tilt and slide sunroof, electric windows and the on board BMW computer. Bill tells us the air-conditioning does not work, and has been disconnected, also that the front headlight washers do not operate.

History and Paperwork

A low mileage example of the E24, this car comes to market from ~8 year ownership, presents in great condition and comes in a popular colour scheme for a classic BMW.

Since Bill has owned the 635 CSi he has kept on top of maintenance with regular servicing and MOTs most years. With only ~71,523 miles on the clock in its life time the 635 is in great condition, ready for its next owner to enjoy for many miles to come.

Please note that the private plate "96 NUR" is included in the sale, it will stay on as pictured.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, when I hpi the car it shows a mileage discrepancy and on Experian it is held as category C- damaged in 2002? I have raised a query with Experian but I may not get an answer before the auction ends. Just wondered if you know any more and could provide any information regarding this please.
Thank you
Matthew

Hi, BillD has investigated this, and it appears it was an incorrect marker. Our check with Cap-HPI who hold the biggest database did not return any flags. We have uploaded the correspondence from Motor Check to the listing; https://www.tradeclassics.com/auctions/bmw/1989-bmw-635-csi-3/#gallery4-81
